Absolutely ridiculous that they’re shipping supposedly “pro” devices with a freaking Lightning port. Shameful.
While I would prefer USB-C as well, I imagine you'd have millions more customers thinking it was ridiculous if they switched and made all the current accessories people have obslete and have to buy new ones. I imagine they are waiting until wireless charging is as good or better than wired so that they they can ditch the port all together rather than switching to another port type.

I am not in the market but my wife was interested in the pro models and my head was spinning with what look like minute camera differences between the models - that Pro vs ProMax is the most confusing Apple has done in a while for a single line. I guess the bottom line is that the Max are better but how much in real life would be the question.

The LiDAR will be the biggest deal between Pro and regular. Autofocus for subject with precise distance measurements means that photo and video should be rarely be out of focus (based on camera focus point). Plus using distance for special effects like background blur even better... and faster. Would not be surprised if they allow live background blur for video.

They said the new MagSafe charger can provide 15W which would be about as good as wired

I guess it is the pacific time zone people that have to get up a bit early to pre-order now at 5 AM. I miss being able to just stay up until 12:01AM to attempt to put in my pre-order while all the websites crashed under crippling traffic.

I agree. At this point, not going all usb-c is absurd. I do find the new mag-safe system really compelling, though!

Sneaky that it's $30 extra for the iPhone 12 unless you choose Verizon as your carrier...
Let's be accurate. Verizon or AT&T. The models that retain the uncharge are for Sprint/T-Mobile, or the unlocked/SIM-free model.

That would be 8AM East coast (US time), correct?

Tbh the Pro models are just photography oriented. Nothing worth for non photographer like me. Might pick up plain 12. But still deciding whether to wait and get the next year’s model with 120hz smoothness.
Yes, photography improvements are the main benefits over the non pro models, and of course the different material, and slightly brighter screen. If you don't use your phone for photography or prefer the color options for the 12, then definetly always good to save money when possible.

I noticed the price increase. I'm wondering if we get an explanation. Is T-Mobile using a different 5g band requiring specific hardware? Just a thought, I really don't know.

No it is very clear to me that Verizon is the one that pushed for 5G (sub 6ghz and mmwave) to be included in all models sold in North America (same as they did with the pixel 5) and as such agreed to subsidize the phone to keep the advertised price below $700. This is an Apple/Verizon/ATT thing and not a TMobile/Unlocked thing. I would actually prefer the unlocked phone be cheaper and not include mmwave tech that I will literally NEVER have access to where I live.

The OLED screen on the iPhone 12 is likely a factor, as well.

Yes I wish they would go to USB-C, but I am guessing the Lightning infrastructure is just too entrenched.
I wonder if they’ll beat the lightning horse to death like they did with the 30 pin? The longer they use this standard, the more “entrenched” it’ll become. At least we can use usb-c to lightning adapters. I’ve got one on most of the cables around our house. Beats multiple sets of cables that are just a little too short!

My thoughts exactly. Last year the OLED screen on the pro models made them a must have for me. Now that the regular 12 has it too I’m wondering why I would go pro. Everything is the same outside of the camera and I’m no photographer.

Those prices are insane for a phone, and no accessories. How anyone can justify spending that much money on a phone is beyond me.

A device that’s basically a computer in your pocket with more power than most laptops with sub dslr/compact camera fidelity - it’s pretty easy to justify a device with those specs that you use every single day for myriad tasks.

I agree I wouldn’t pay these prices just to make phone calls but this isn’t a phone like a £100 Nokia from 2004.

The phone part is actually the most boring thing about this device.

It is better than the junk 5W models they used to supply, but not as good as the 18W that came with the iPhone 11. I use the 30W standalone since it supports USB PD.

I tend to think Lightning will stick around until they get rid of the port completely (which could be as soon as the iPhone 13) and just do wireless charging and WiFi/BT synching.

Have had an iPhone since day 1 - might be the first time ever I go with something other than space grey or black. Loving the blue
I was really excited about green with the last go-round. I didn’t consider the fact that my phone is pretty much always in a case! What I hate is that stupid rear glass. Even with a case, I cracked the back on mine a few months after purchase. I’ll probably stick with white this time.

the obvious choice is always to wait as the next model MUST be better if Apple wants people to buy. Next year, its looking quite decent: we can look for a bump in megapixel count, sensor shift tech to make it to the other lenses, 120mhz promotion, A15, 2nd gen 5G, etc.

Wasn't my time to upgrade, so I'm not too gutted, but I was really hoping to see the usb c love. Maybe next year?

when the leaks for the mag safe came out I was wondering how this could possibly make my life better. I actually like the wallet case options that looks to be easily removable. I could see myself using that. Kinda wishing we got it last year. But third party will have to suffice for now.
I’d imagine the first real opportunity for usb-c will be the 14. Apple likes to stick with the same form factor for two product cycles (usually).

really Apple has a very compelling line up - you can pick up the SE (faster than 95%+ of all phones out there) for $399 or less - I see it on special all the time.
if you do want the latest and greatest from Apple, Samsung, LG, etc - yes will pay thru the nose but you don't have - there are lots of of other alternatives out there.
