Wonder if the magnets are strong enough so the MagSafe charger can function vertically as a car charger?

MagSafe sounds annoying when trying to grab the phone off the charger. Wont it just lift the base up too? Is there Velcro or something? Seems like it’s solving a non existent problem.

They will probably have some 3rd party solutions that resolve this, but I imagine some 3m strips will work just fine as well.

What is the origin of that 12 Pro unboxing video, and why is it considered legit? If Prosser is in fact correct about devices being out for review/preview, then this is breaking embargo—which seems sketchy.

Kinda expect more from MacRumors than just passive acceptance. Any provenance, or analysis of why this is trusted?

Because it has a valid TENAA certification number.

I wonder if Apple has reached the final form of iPhone designs for a while with MagSafe. Every year we all have to buy new cases and accessories. I would buy more cases if I knew they had a self life longer than a year. It would be good for the environment as well.

From Apple's pictures, the Navy case looked pretty much like the Midnight Blue that I have now, but it looks brighter in this picture; I like it. I hope that the new silicone cases don't start to peel at the bottom after six months like the old ones have.

I think the design looks dope, sporting last years model so won't upgrade, but looks good for picking up the iPhone 13 (or 14 if they skip the unlucky number)

It does. Belkin is releasing one that attaches to a vent.

Vent mounts are not my preference, but I imagine other solutions will pop up.
Good to know- I have a proclip dash mount in my vehicle now that is fitted with a strong magnet. Hope I can simply swap it with the MagSafe!

I'm wondering this exactly as well. Sounds like a two-handed operation. Pick the phone up with one hand and pull the charger off with the other. Doesn't sound very elegant. Or shake the charger off

But consider what it's replacing. Nothing stops you from using your phone with a conventional wireless charging pad; you just won't get 15W power with this method. Instead, this gives you something that's more akin to plugging in the phone (which itself is a two-handed operation), but will be easier in many cases than dealing with a plug. The point, I think, is that this is a useful middle ground between wireless charging (which wastes a ton of power) and plug-in charging (which may be inconvenient in some situations).

Personally, I like this option but I hope Apple keeps a charging port in the future, as wired charging is still the most environmentally-friendly choice.

I completely agree. I was gifted a wireless charger. I tried it for 2 weeks. About 1/3rd of the time, it never charged my phone. When I set it on the charger, it would light up with the green battery like it was charging, then I left it until the next morning. No charge.

So I cannot rely on those at all. MagSafe is so much better.

Not sure if this helps, but it worked for me. I had my phone set that certain notifications would make my phone vibrate. This would happen enough at night (group texts after I went to sleep) that it would vibrate the phone off the sweet spot for my wireless charger. Once I disabled that, all has been good with my wireless charger.

The problem it solves doesn't exist yet.

That is, next year (or perhaps the year after - whatever) when Apple removes the wired charging port entirely from these devices, without Magsafe to step in, there would be no practical way to use the phone while it is charging. IMHO, this is the primary reason why Magsafe exists. They simply released it this year to get everyone used to the idea.

This is also why the Apple Magsafe charger is as small and light as possible and has no way to attach or mount it securely to something else - they want you to adjust to the idea that the wireless charger being the new plug. You pick up the phone and then remove the charger from it, just like today you pick up the phone and remove the cable.

Now, I'm sure that begs the question - why is this better than a would-be wired neo-Magsafe plug-in solution instead? Well, I suspect they believe it's better because a wired connection have contacts, and contacts are prone to damage. Additionally, wired connections require a whole in the device, and holes can allow dust, water, etc into the device. In other words it makes the device more durable/reliable which means less long term warranty/replacement costs.

That's my take.

Sounds similar to using a lightning dock. Unless the dock is affixed to the tabletop/desktop, you'll pull the dock up with your iPhone. I'd say this charger is meant for people who would like another way to charge their phones while using it & easily disconnect when getting up.
My wife's phone not being charged every night because she doesn't get it aligned on the charger when she sleepily puts it on the nightstand disagrees. I imagine at worst you just push the charger to the side with a finger to "disconnect" it from the phone.
Wireless charging pads aren't all that bad; you get confirmation of successful alignment via screen & chime. With MagSafe, you'd still have to get close enough to feel the magnets attract each other.

Someday we'll have Tony Stark tech that'll summon our device from anywhere to its charging station...
iPhone 3000? See what I did there. 😉

Until then, some will find spending $40 or $60 ($20 adapter sold separately) for the "attractive" assist worth it. 🧲
For others, a slight finger-nudge isn't that big of an inconvenience. 👉🏼
