I'm wondering this exactly as well. Sounds like a two-handed operation. Pick the phone up with one hand and pull the charger off with the other. Doesn't sound very elegant. Or shake the charger off

That's true for Apple's Magsafe charger, yes. But there will be third party chargers (some we've already seen previews of) which either mount to something or are heavy enough such that you can life the phone off while the charger stays put. Another possible design would be one where the charger is wider than your phone and your fingers leverage against it when you grab the phone. Apple's upcoming Duo charger will no doubt be designed in one of these ways since obviously you won't want the whole charger and your Apple Watch coming with the phone when you pick it up.

I wonder if the Magsafe spec allows for an electro-magnetic connection. That would allow for some slick chargers that detect you attempting to remove a device and cut power to the magnet. Of course, another possible KISS design is simply a Magsafe-compatible charger with no magnets. In other words, a "traditional" wireless charger that adopts the 15W MagSafe charging protocol rather than being limited to the 7.5W Qi protocol.

🤔 it looks a little bit tacky with all that shine

iPhone Pro's have been normally matte and understated in the past.
It looks like the Pro's are all about the bling this year. From the downright flashy gold to these super reflective edges.

But consider what it's replacing. Nothing stops you from using your phone with a conventional wireless charging pad; you just won't get 15W power with this method. Instead, this gives you something that's more akin to plugging in the phone (which itself is a two-handed operation), but will be easier in many cases than dealing with a plug. The point, I think, is that this is a useful middle ground between wireless charging (which wastes a ton of power) and plug-in charging (which may be inconvenient in some situations).

Yeah, that's true. The 15W are really nice compared to the wireless charging speed of my iPhone X. MagSafe offers some interesting possibilities for future products.

I'm totally not liking the shiny edges on the pro. I can almost see the marketing campaign next year: "you know how on the iPhone 12 pro the shiny edges are full of your fingerprints? That gave us an idea: let's put a fingerprint sensor there!"

The edges really aren't chamfered at all? I can't tell from the official pictures with super dramatic lighting...

I think tomorrow will be telling. All the review videos should be out so we will be able to see what Pacific Blue looks like and get an idea how it compares to Graphite!

Graphite does look awesome though!

My wife's phone not being charged every night because she doesn't get it aligned on the charger when she sleepily puts it on the nightstand disagrees. I imagine at worst you just push the charger to the side with a finger to "disconnect" it from the phone.
I'd find it a lot more annoying to have to tear apart the magsafe (possibly snagging the wire, which undoubtedly will be the toilet paper thin variety of apple cables) when i sleepily grab at the phone in the morning when the alarm wakes me up.

But hey, at least these phones will continue to work my Qi chargers, so guess we both have our problems solved. High Five!

Wow what a big deal with shinny edges. It’s the forth year with shinny SS and the first that has drawn such a big attention. I personally think it looks and feels much better than aluminium, and foremost it’s way more resistant.

I am definitely getting the clear case now big circle and all. or maybe no case at all! I don't want to hide this beauty in a case!

MagSafe sounds annoying when trying to grab the phone off the charger. Wont it just lift the base up too? Is there Velcro or something? Seems like it’s solving a non existent problem.
The problem is alignment, this particular charger doesn't make much sense to me but the idea as a whole does.
