does the phone work ?

if it does don't worry about it stop looking for issues enjoy your phone
I remember when I first got the 4s, there was a gap between the back plate and the metal band near the camera. You could actually fit more than a piece of paper in it. Anyway I was going to return it, but then thought to myself, the camera still works and the rest of the phone works. I put a case on it and promptly forgot about it until I took the case off the following year after buying a 5.

Apple fined 10 million euros over “misleading” iPhone waterproofing claims

Italy’s anti-trust authority AGCM or Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato has fined Apple 10 million euros (roughly $12 million) for ‘misleading’ claims on the water resistance capacity of its iPhones.

Clearly shows the iPhone doesn't have water resistance. This gap may hamper.

Hi, I tried contacting Apple India and they have denied me replacement as apparently they can't see any gap while the rest of the whole world are fools who agree that there's a gap on my iPhone after seeing it's condition on my video. Never ever gonna buy Apple again as it sucks at after-sale service.

And nobody in that article is talking about the gap or its function because that article is covering completely different iPhones models.

I’m in the US so not sure if this applies in India but I’ve had 2 phones replaced for the gap issue but haven’t been able to get away from it. That gap exists in almost all of them, albeit in different places. You’d have to get really lucky to end up with one that doesn’t have one, and then you run the risk of having something else cosmetically wrong with the phone.
The way I understand this issue, the screen is ever so slightly smaller than the circumference of the steel housing, perhaps to mitigate the risk of the screen shattering from side impacts. In years past, apple used to have a thin plastic frame running around the edge of the screen that has been removed in these latest models. This means that the folks at the assembly line have to be far more precise to align the screen dead center of the device; any slight deviations result in wider gaps in some places.
In my experience, these minor cosmetic issues have existed for years owing to iPhones being mass produced on assembly lines where folks are more concerned with churning out volume over quality. I’ve personally just learned to live with them. I’d say try to put it out of your mind and enjoy your phone, and if down the line it gives you any other issues you can get it swapped out under warranty. In my experience, if you let these minor issues get to you you’re setting yourself up for some major grief as you’ll find such minor deviations with almost every device which could lead to dissatisfaction with your very expensive purchase.

You are absolutely 100% correct. People spend more time looking for issues vs. just enjoying the device for what it is. No consumer product in this world is perfect...period! If you look hard enough you will find things its as simple as that. If people are this OCD over a phone, I can only imagine how they are with actual material things such as an expensive car or house.

I examined my husband's 12 Pro and my 12 Pro max. I can wiggle a piece of paper into gap areas on both. The paper will fit in slightly and I wonder it that is part of the design with the phone being sealed further down.

Out of curiosity I tried the same test on my Watch 6. I can fit a piece of paper between its screen and the metal wrapped around it to the same depth as I can on the iPhone 12's. I swim a mile six times a week with that watch on and tracking my progress. I got it when they were first released in September. I think I can safely say it handles the water just fine. So I am inclined to think the gap is just part of the design and the water seal still good.

The water seal is at a different place. When you look at dissasembly photos, there is like a step below the screen and the screen is glued to that. There is no glue between the rim and the glass.

Yesterday, Went to the service center and shown the gap. Technican told that it will be in all phones and it is under manufacturer tolerance and will not have any issue on water splashing.. We cannot able to provide a replacement and the Apple repair center will try to re-align the display screen.

Makes a sorry reading. Feel for you bro. We in india pay a bomb to buy these devices.
I don’t have a pro model, rather have a 12. Similar to few other posts, have a small gap on the top rim and nothing on the bottom.

honestly I didn’t even have a eye for such micro level details.

I would suggest to sell it off and may be take in a loss of 30/40 $$ and may be buy pro or non pro model.
atleast it would not hurt so much.

now that I know this I will keep this far away from any water.

Probably you are right. But your opinion will change a lot when you are forced to pay ~1800$ for a 1100$ device. At such a price point, these non issues kinda pinch 🤏🏻 bad.

I'd be happier if I didn't find this thread but my OCD kicked in. Received my 12 PM yesterday and it has a gap and going back on Saturday. Replacing with a black one, hopping to win the phone lottery.

My guess is majority of them will have slight tolerance with this tiny gap. Good luck in finding one that doesn't have a gap, might be a long journey ahead of you.😂

This. As long as it’s within normal tolerance and not an excessive gap, this shouldn’t be an issue. I can fit a very thin piece of paper (I used a paper receipt) around the left edge of my 12 Pro Max, but not the right hand side. I recall I noticed the same with one or two previous iPhones. It’s not a problem for me and I imagine is within manufacturing tolerances.

I have 12 pro MAX with the same issue there is very little gap at top right corner and i have checked around 5 different 12 pro MAX , china version , USA and European one all has light gaps. technically it is not possible to have edge to edge fitting with stainless steel and glass and no matter how perfectly there is fitting there will still be minor may be 0.001 nm gap as per design. water can slip through no matter how perfectly screen is aligned with RIM edges. now coming to the IP68 rating. below screen there is seal which will not allow water to slip inside the phone and that seal is there for water resistance

I really don't see it as issue or problem it is perfectly normal and at this type of design it can happen where screen is fitted inside the rim not on top of it.

feel free to use your phone the way you want. it is still safe to use and secondly IP68 doesn't mean to use phone at swimming pool water or any other like sea. once salt or cholerine will touch the seal it will chemically react with the seal and will make it damage

see the following screen replacement video to see how seal works.

hope answer the concern.

Your facts have been pointed out numerous times.
Perfect iPhone seekers really don't care about reason and logic. They just want perfection.

you are right but some people are making confusion here by saying that they have replaced their and there are some iPhone without GAP, apple should allow to replace phone with any valid reason
