Makes a sorry reading. Feel for you bro. We in india pay a bomb to buy these devices.
I don’t have a pro model, rather have a 12. Similar to few other posts, have a small gap on the top rim and nothing on the bottom.

honestly I didn’t even have a eye for such micro level details.

I would suggest to sell it off and may be take in a loss of 30/40 $$ and may be buy pro or non pro model.
atleast it would not hurt so much.

now that I know this I will keep this far away from any water.

Why would they return the phone? The gap does not affect water resistance as the seal is inside the phone, not where the rim meets the glass. It’s just a tiny, barely noticeable cosmetic thing that most phones have in one way or the other.

@Guruprasad.r no need to return the phone and please don’t try to pour any sealant in the gap, ffs, you may end up damaging the phone! The gap will not affect water resistance. What advice people give, it’s insane....

To those saying the gap doesn’t matter. Have any of you ran your devices under water to test that theory, or are you too scared? I know I’m scared to let water come near this phone now. When a small device costs so much and your reputation is so huge, yeah people expect perfection and rightfully so. It’s how Apple gets paid.

The water resistance is not there for you to "run your device under water". It's added protection for those times when the phone might come in contact with water. I wouldn't run any of my electronics under water. But that's just me.

If you read any of the thread, you would have seen where the screen's water resistance is not achieved around the edge of the glass but rather around the backside of the glass. This makes the gap a non-issue when it comes to the water resistance.

My 12 pro max has the gap as well but I think it is normal. I‘ve checked 5 iphone 12prm at apple store, all of them have the gaps at different places around the screen.

after reading occasionally about this “gap between glass and the rim”, I decided to check out mine and my wife’s....

As you can see in the picture, the gap is present on mine - its not everywhere, just some spots.

I assume many models might be affected, as also mentioned by many on here..

I know it’s an issue that affects our OCD, and for that there are ways to deal with :)
But the question is whether this is something that will eventually affect negatively the phone. Dust or other particles

Out of curiosity I also checked out the iPhone XR. As the second picture shows, some gaps are present on that one too,
less wide. Paper needed to be pressed a bit more, while in the 12 the paper goes down more easily.

All phones have gaps around the frame to glass. Normal.
sometimes a bristle gets stuck on my phones when using the attached. Normal.

Maybe this will calm some of your nerves. 5:12 water resistance explained.

That is what I was about to post, yea it seems to be normal and if you can fit a coin then yea its wrong and need replacement but a thin sheet of paper is normal. All my iphones and even watches have gaps and also I did the paper test and it goes in lol IMO it is just more noticeable since we been so used to the curve screen for about 4 to 6 years...

Tested this on my 12 pro. Ran a post-it along the edges and sure enough, in places the paper would slide under the glass. So I called Apple. Explained what was happening and they said it definitely shouldn't be doing that and that I should send it back to them immediately.

Can you fold the paper and it will still fit ? Because you might be wasting your time if you plan on returning every phone that can fit a 0.10mm piece of paper along the edge.

Let us know if the replacement comes the same, I also spoke to a apple agent and a senior adviser, they said the following: The apple engineer clarified that “it’s within tolerance - no issue”. That was based only on a photo showing a piece of paper fitting into the gap. .... Some agents will replace it just to keep you happy nothing wrong of doing that either. One of my friends has a family who works at a apple store and assured him it is normal and it's a tolerance issue that the QC approves those just like that video said.

You may well be right. Won’t hurt to have them take a look at it though.

Mistake number one. Believing what the Apple customer services tech told you.

Issue is you’ll be going through exchange hell if replace device because it has a gap which they all do. Next one might have green tint.
Yea that is why if its something small I wouldn't want to replace it, because there could be something worse like that green tint or yellow tint or a dead pixel..... The gap is very small yea dust can be noticeable but just wipe it with a microfiber towel and it will go away or use a thin paper to take the dust out. Of course if a coin fits in the gap then yes replace it but not because thin paper fits lol...

True....but it would be bad luck. Then I'd just have to start an endless return cycle. Would kind of go the way this year has started in general though.
