My buddy at work upgraded a few months ago, and all he could find was the 12 Pro max. He wanted the 12 Pro.

I have the 12 pro. Next time I upgrade, I may get the max. I'm always throwing the thing in a cargo pants pocket or carry bag anyway....

It is an interesting trend. Maybe with people staying home, they spent less on things that they normally would (starbucks, movies, gas, etc), thus allowing more frugal purchases on gadgets.
For me, staying home meant the 12 Pro Max's size would be a non-issue, so I got one at launch. Now that I've had it for a while, the size isn't too bad even when I'm out so I think I'd probably stick with the large size phones going forward.

Yep, I noticed that, too. Long live Mini!

I’ll probably get a 13 Mini to replace my SE1, but would be willing to wait for a 14 Mini if they decide to make one 🤞
I love my mini as well. Battery with the separate 5G radio is a letdown, but will surely get better with the next iteration (I hope there is a next). The Pro Max is completely the opposite of what I want.

I can’t stand enormous phones since it’s such a bulge in my pocket (already have to deal with one)

Love my 12 Pro, but just wish it had the better stabilization that the Max has. The design, telephoto lens, and better low light make it worthwhile over the 12 IMO

It’s obviously the best phone for apple. glsd I don’t have a smaller model as battery life hasn’t been great for a while though. Might be because I use 4G at work which takes a hit on battery life

Can't blame Apple for their decision on the iPhone mini. After all that engineering and marketing effort, the 1 year old mini sells as well as the 3 year old XR. The SE has been pretty consistent in terms of sales even though it's based on a dated form factor.
They marketed the mini? I’ve only seen marketing for the bigger iPhones. Also from the chart it looks like the mini’s sales increase percentage from the previous quarter was one of the highest if not the highest. If projected into the future, the mini sales could soon be worth it for Apple. Maybe it’s a slow burn for many people to realize they’re tired of carrying big phones, and that there is a smaller option.

i agree completely, but i always tell my friends — just wait a couple of months and you'll get a better phone. not that the one you can get now is bad, but it's always nice to get an upgraded device. unless you lost your phone)

I buy in the summer as this is, sometimes, where the good price points/sales are. I'm targeting IP13 for the summer of 22.
Those who want the latest tech first is completely understandable but that usually comes with paying top dollar for it. Me? I love hearing slickdeals or other websites say "this is easily the lowest price we've seen on the ____":)

I'm not much for the rumor mill but on this one I'd be shocked if the bigger MBPs M1 don't hit the market within 3 months. But if you want it as a sweeter price wait for the summer of 22. /s

The latest research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows that all four iPhone 12 models accounted for 63% of total iPhone sales in the United States in the quarter ending June 2021.

The highest-end iPhone 12 Pro Max tied with the year-old iPhone 11 for the largest share of any single model at 23%, while the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone XR had the smallest share, each at 5%, according to CIRP. As pandemic-related restrictions ease in the United States, the Chicago-based research firm said increased consumer spending correlated with consumers shifting to more expensive iPhone models.

"Apple did very well as it emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic," said Josh Lowitz, a CIRP co-founder. "Increased consumer spending correlated with consumers shifting to more expensive iPhone models as they retired older phones and shopped more at Apple's own retail locations to buy those iPhones."

The shift to more expensive models resulted in the iPhone's average selling price in the United States rising to $869 in the June 2021 quarter, added Lowitz.

The research note also indicates that Apple experienced a significant increase in iPhone sales through its retail operations, including both physical stores and online. In the June 2021 quarter, 27% of iPhone sales in the United States were completed through Apple, compared to a previous high of 21% in September 2020, according to CIRP.

CIRP bases its findings on its survey of 500 customers in the United States who purchased an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch in the April-June 2021 period.

Apple should not be getting too giddy over this, and should not try to keep raising their prices into the stratosphere. If they do that, they will hit a ceiling and will find themselves in the same kind of situation that they were in in the 1990s where the prices increased util their market share bottomed out and they found themselves in a financial pickle. Yes, things are looking rosy now, but that can and will change if they let this go to their heads.

The best thing that Apple can do now is lower their prices across the entire lineup and offer generous trade-in values to thank their loyal customers for our continued business.

Another thing worth noting: Microsoft has recently announced Windows 11, which is introducing a whole new set of system requirements, and is rendering a whole slew of (not so old) hardware obsolete. Apple can persuade people to buy Macs over PCs now by offering financial incentives to PC users in the form of lower prices and trade-ins. If Apple does not do this, then people may see value in buying Microsoft's own hardware, or hardware that is made by PC vendors, which will cause them to lose out on a whole generation of new customers.

I am an Apple customer and I appreciate what Apple does by making machines and software that cater to everyone, from home users to business pros. However, I am also watching the prices, and if they keep going through the roof, even though I am able to afford it, I don't want to be spending money for the sake of spending money. I will be watching for what else is out there. I would love to stay within the Apple ecosystem, as I enjoy the products and software very much, but I don't love the rising prices. Eventually something will need to give.

iPhone 12 mini sales increased from March '21 to June '21 quarter. See, there's demand.
Rene Richie commented on this. The SE was popular because it was both small and cheap.

The mini wasn’t cheap. It will start to sell more as it gets older and cheaper for those people who don’t care about size.

Sounds like you missed the launch of the purple iPhone 12/mini along all major carriers offering $700 in bill credits. It took that kind of effort for the 12 mini to match the sales of the 3-year old iPhone XR.

That's not slow burning sales performance, that's outright embarrassment.

As they say, time is money. Why should Apple settle for that kind of sales performance? It's no wonder they turned to selling a 6.7" mainstream model for 2022.
