Actually you can see it while outside, when dark in evening, closest not required :) I also mentioned perfect it most other cases.

But thanks for your condescending and totally useless reply, lol! This is a forum, try contributing something of value. It's a $1000 phone and good for feedback on any issue, so other can see whats happening. Also, knowing something is a common issue is good also, to know before you buy, and can also help deciding if you want/need to return, or wait for software update.
If one person grins from reading my comment then it wasn’t useless. Condescending? Only through your interpretation and inability to laugh at yourself

I noticed the same issue on my pro when looking at pure black on YouTube or in photos.

I tried out a show on Netflix called “Night on Earth” which is in DV and the blacks go to pure OLED black (pixels turned off) immediately. The first couple minutes of the show demonstrates this pretty well.

It could absolutely be a software problem. Not all 12 pros/12’s come with the exact same software. I have a Canadian 12 Pro so I do not have the 5G antenna. Can someone in the US confirm they’re also having the issue?

I’m surprised this isn’t getting more attention than the yellow display issue. That’s pretty normal and has been since the X. This is new and affects all 12 pro’s. Would love to know if it’s software or hardware at fault here, or maybe it’s intentional for some weird reason. Im sure people not seeing it aren’t doing the test right as I’ve now seen the identical behaviour on on 4 units.

Not mine. Completely black on the video in the first post.

To be sure of seeing the problem, you need to save an image of a black background and then zoom in in the photos app and wait for the swipe bar to disappear at the bottom so there are no elements on screen. This should be done at 0 brightness in a completely dark room.
There are many other places you will see it if you are looking for it but that’s a dead cert.

I’m getting the same behaviour, but only at Brightness settings above 0. And it seems to peak around the middle of the Brightness slider range. Very weird.

I get the same issue. I also checked another iPhone 12 Pro and the same issue persists.
Brightness between 10% and 30% results in raised blacks. The pixels don’t turn off.
I called Apple support and they told me to upload a video to show this problem. They are now aware of this thread in macrumors.

I have this issue and also noticed it on some Apps when everything is black. First noticed it when I setup WhatsApp and during chat restore. I got a replacement iPhone 12 Pro as I thought it was the iPhone same thing. Every iPhone I have ever had there's been issues from yellow tints to now this. Is this an Apple specific issues with screens every year or is this a smart phone issue all manufactures are facing?

My iPhone 11 Pro did not have this issue. The display was more or less perfect. I may return the iPhone 12 Pro and preorder the iPhone 12 Pro Max, hoping they may have a different panel.

I tried 14.2 GM but is still there, so it‘s the panel itself. I finally return my iPhone 12 and keep my XS for at least 1-2 months and or maybe one year.

Does your replacement phone has this issue or/and yellow tint?

Same issue with the black and yellow tint. Could have been from the same batch. Who knows. I think with the iPhone 6 the yellow tint was so bad and its before True Tone I believe had about 6 replacements. Apple Exec team then said, where does it say on our website the white screen is crystal clear. No mention lol...thats when it came to light Apple can be a dark company.

Why do apple have such screen issues? I find it so interesting and slightly unacceptable because these are premium products! My £3000 Sony OLED screen is perfect, my £1100 iPhone should be the same!

When I contacted Apple support on Monday the lady told me that she wasn’t allowed to officially acknowledge the issue because it wasn’t on the Apple support forum. She basically told me she wasn’t allowed to check other forums. If I know Apple, they’ll just tell us we’re looking at the panel the wrong way instead of organizing a recall. Even if some people are not having the issue, I’m going to guess that 90+% of people are. I’m very surprised that a big YouTube has not come across this yet.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but my iPhone 12 Pro does not do this. I ran the video in pitch darkness and there is no difference between 0% to 100% brightness. It is always completely black.

How can you do the test wrong? It is just a video and the brightness slider. The only conclusion is that all 12 Pros don’t have this issue.

I’d like to chime in and say I don’t have this issue as well. I’d adjusted my brightness slider at each level with the video playing and it’s just as if the screen is off.

When I play that video, I see that grey image, but it becomes pitch black a few seconds after the menu bar goes away. (low brightness)
With max brightness, there is no grey effect.
Mine does as well, that’s why I’m thinking it’s a software issue. I’m not surprised that it still exists in 14.2, because Apple execs are likely still are not aware of it. A big YouTuber needs to get a hold of this.

Yap, sadly it could become a bigger problems in the future. Who knows?!
It‘s not acceptable for a „premium“ device.

I’m located in Germany. Apple Support here did check out and acknowledged this thread on macrumors.

I can confirm that 2 iPhone 12 Pro in Germany and 1 iPhone 12 Pro in the US experience the same issue. It seems pretty widespread.

I'm here in the UK with a Graphite 256gb pro have the exact same issue. These were rushed out of the door by Apple and I'm pretty sure it's software related, as OLED tech is mature enough not to have such issues ( my samsungs for last three generations have been spot on in this regard). My software is 14.1 (18A8395) wonder if it's any different for those not having issues. Hopefully fix coming soon.

I’m on 14.2 (RC) right now and the problem still persists.
This year the panels are also provided by LG (not only Samsung), so maybe the iPhone 12 Pro has the (inferior) LG panels?

At a certain brightness level it will even flash between on and off.

Here's conclusive proof of the problem! Bear in mind that what's grey appears green due to camera weirdness.

Had the same issue with my iPhone 11 Pro before it broke, I noticed it every night when launching apps on dark mode.
Luckily for me the 12 Pro I picked up at the Apple Store yesterday doesn’t have it. It was the one thing I was concerned about.

Hmm, hopefully now that Apple are supposedly aware of it hopefully a fix might be coming otherwise a lot of phones will need replacing if it's a hardware issue. Think I'll keep mine for time being as I'm unlikely to get a 'working' replacement as so many seem to have the issue. After doing a little digging ( some media outlets are incorrectly reporting/interpreting the source report) the 12inch pro is a Samsung Panel LG are only providing panels for the normal iPhone 12 Samsung providing the rest, also makes sense in term of the difference in brightness between the two.
