Same issue here in Germany with my iPhone 12 Pro. I got a new one from Apple but same issue on this one. I will call Apple again but I still hope for a software issue.

Short update: Second replacement, problem occurs again.

I can confirm the error. Got my iPhone today and checked it. If brightness is set to flow the screen has this glow on it at full black levels even in photos app. At high brightness it’s full black. Hopefully it’s only an software issue.

I also have this issue. Got the US iPhone 12 Pro on the 24th and through this whole week I’ve noticed a grey/green light when displaying what should be pure black colors. It only occurs when brightness is between 15% to 70%

At 100% brightness on my 11 Pro Max, pure black wallpaper disappears in a dark room, like the screen is off. That slight backlight effect on the 12 Pro isn't normal. It'll also affect your editing when you think the image already looks a bit crushed.

Currently having the same issue. Well hopefully this is a software issue with the brightness setting and Apple implements a fix in the next update. Could be done intentionally so more people decide to purchase apple care! Who knows?! Jk...🧐

Same iOS across 12 Pro's, don't think software fix will do it. If I buy an OLED TV I expect absolute blacks. Messes up image editing if blacks aren't true.

Yeah, I’m not gonna lie this a big bummer for the 12 Pro and it’s crazy to me that nobody has mentioned anything about it in their reviews. My Xs Max in comparison is much much better.

This is certainly annoying and didn’t think I had the issue and even ran the tests and still couldn’t see it but as it only seems to happens at certain brightness levels it took me a while to get the variables right which is why perhaps reviewers and others haven’t picked up in it.

I feel it’s probably more a software bug than hardware as someone else mentioned earlier in the thread OLED isn’t new and mature enough not to have issues like this.

I have submitted feedback on https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html in the hopes that Apple may actually read it and fix it in a iOS update.

It seems there isn’t much point getting it changed as it seems either a large percentage have the issue or they all do so will see how things go, I may try an exchange in a few months if it seems to be hardware related.

It will be interesting to see if the Mini and Pro Max suffer as they will use different panels I am not sure if anyone has seen this behaviour on the 12 either?

I tried doing a DFU reset on my iPhone 12 Pro yesterday since 14.2 came out a couple days ago through iTunes. I did notice a change for the better. It seems like anything below 70% brightness seems to have that weird grey light effect during complete black scenes in a pitch black room but 70% or higher are showing true blacks as they should on an OLED. Before I did the DFU the only time I would get TRUE blacks with 0 weird backlighting issues is when it was at 100% brightness. Also, I’d like to mention that I’m aware that Apple didn’t release any info about fixing a brightness issue on the 14.2 bug notes. I figured I’d give it a try and it seemed to help a bit for me. Idk if you guys want to give it a shot but definitely make sure to have all your **** backed up into your iCloud first. It’s a pain in the ass doing a DFU reset but worth it IMO.

I don't think DFU would fix that if software bug is embedded in the firmware itself...

hoping it is not a hardware bug and Apple is diligent enough to fix it through software...either way it's really annoying when watching videos in dark room.

Did you just read “DFU” and decide to comment just to comment? That’s great that you think it won’t work... I’m saying it helped for me. Also Apples tech is the one who recommended to do this and it did help alleviate the issue.

I think most (if not all) iPhone 12 Pros suffer from this problem, however most people don’t notice (needs to be a totally dark room, e.g. watching YouTube or a movie in bed) or don’t care (coming from an iPhone XR, iPhone 8 with LCD screens). My girlfriend upgraded from an iPhone 8 Plus and I showed her the problem and she just does not care, as she comes from an iPhone 8 Plus.

I wouldn't care much if the green-ness is at least uniform all throughout the screen...

Mine actually FLASHES green-black near the area where FaceID sensor is....supper annoying

When I play that video, I see that grey image, but it becomes pitch black a few seconds after the menu bar goes away. (low brightness)
With max brightness, there is no grey effect.
Same here.
I tested twice. Once only on low light, I saw the grey image.
Rebooted the phone. Turned off auto-brightness.
Tested again, max brightness. No grey effect.
Reduced brightness. Grey "ghost" image appears, disappears after a couple seconds.
Turned on auto-brightness. Tested again. Same result.

edit: iOS 14.2

Completely black for me. Couldn’t get it to be anything other than black. Turned brightness on full, auto off etc etc. Couldn’t tell where the border of the screen started/finished etc

You need the brightness between 30 and 70 to see it and even then it can be quite subtle and only visible when there is motion on the display and be in a very dark room, it seems below 30% and above 70% it’s inky OLED blacks at least for my 12 Pro.

I didnt think I had the issue even after the tests mentioned on here as it always looked OLED black but I spotted it watching some AppleTV+ content where there is just an Apple logo on the screen or just a single credit or word in the centre.

I wouldn’t go looking for it personally if you can’t see I wish I hadn’t gone looking as I would have been blissfully unaware. lol

Is there anyone who had luck with an exchange phone? Or is it an general Issue? Any thoughts if it’s Hardware or Software related?

i am pretty stalled how I handle this situation.

Looking in this thread some people have exchanged their iPhone a couple of times and think one person tried 3 and it effected all of them so could be a general issue it also seems to effect the 12 and well as the 12 Pro.

I am hopeful its software fixable as its only at certain brightness levels that the pixels don't turn off so could be a bug with how the brightness slider interacts with the panel but I am really just guessing.

If you can get to a store safely it might be worth showing them but inspect the replacement if possible before leaving the shop as it may have the same problem.

I have created a support ticket with Apple about is using the Support app and a senior technician took all the details and said he would forward them onto the iPhone team, if that actually happens who knows? But I am supposed to be getting a call tomorrow to update me on it.

I guess we could do with some of the big YouTubers to test and do a video on it and create awareness to bring it to Apple's attention faster.
