Gonna stick to my 11 Pro Max, hardly any meaningful upgrade this year. If they had added a fingerprint sensor I would’ve got it just for that as I’m tired of putting in my password because of the mask, missed opportunity.

I doubt if an under screen finger sensor could have been added just to accommodate the opportunity presented by the pandemic and face masks, assuming Apple had the tech working acceptably. It took a few months for masks to be recommended. By then, a lot of the design was probably already finalized. But it would be a good feature for future iPhones.

Is it me? I don't see these blues as being even close to the same.
I'd imagine that lighting, angle and image editing made it look like a different shade of blue. All the other reviews I saw with the same color looked more accurate to Apple's images of the same phone.

Wouldn't most videos i.e. movies still display at 60fps as that is the framerate of their release?

To be honest, that is a good question. I will have to check on that, but, if that were the case all of the TV's that people are buying for home with 120hz is for naught. All, even if the program is 60hz, I guess the screen can still do a refresh at 120hz. It would just mean that every other refresh would be a duplicate.

I'm very cynical about this because everything else Apple has done this year indicates to me that 120 Hz displays were scrapped early on as a cost saving measure. In other words, the already ridiculously expensive iPhone Pro models couldn't get 120 Hz displays because Apple wasn't comfortable with the margin.

Is it possible battery life played a significant factor as well? Apple always tends to find the right balance between tech, performance and user experience.

Face ID does not work while wearing a mask.
Unless you are wearing it incorrectly.

For me to get Face ID to work with a mask on I just need to lower it to below the nose and it will recognize me.

Other than the cameras and 5G radio, what can the iPhone 12 Pro do that my iPhone X can’t? I’m trying to be open minded to an upgrade, but I can’t find a reason to.

For me, the camera improvements compared to my X are worth the upgrade to the 12 Pro. For people who are undecided, the Apple Store iPhone app lets you compare features between your current device and a large selection of other iPhones, including the newest ones and older phones going back to the iPhone SE and 6.

Surprise surprise, gushing reviews from the usual suspects. Been the same story for every new iPhone that's ever come out.
Let me guess what the iPhone 13 reviews will be ...
Sounds like you are waiting for an awful review like the ones sure to be found on Android central. This sounded like a realistic review to me. They clearly outed concerns like the refresh rate “not being pro”

I have an 8 Plus that I am totally happy with. Normally I wouldn't consider upgrading but there's two reason I'm going to. 1) T-mobile will give me $415 in credits towards a new phone and another $200 for being loyal customer. 2) After 5 years with a plus sized phone I'm tired of the big phone and want the mini. Sure next year the phones will be better but it will cost me more at that point and I'd rather have a small phone now.

Unfortunately it looks like Apple is using the same sensors on new iPhone 12 pro as with the iPhone 11 pro. The only real improvement seems to be the software correction of distortion on ultra-wide lens which brings me to question: why dont they add the same software correction to the iPhone 11? Computationally distortion is easy to fix.
Reviewers also said the ultra-wide angle camera produced sharper and crisper images (which would indicate a better lens). Plus there is the fact that the ultra-wide also gets Night Mode (note also that previously the ultra-wide couldn't output raw files with third-party apps like Halide). That could indicate that some limitations of the sensor from that ultra-wide camera have been lifted.

What certainly got improved from the 11 to the 12 (leaving the a Max model aside for a moment) is that the main camera got a faster (and higher lens element count) lens (f/1.8 to f/1.6).

Prosser said Tuesday first reviewed will roll out, seems he nail it again this time.
This was sarcasm, yeah? I mean Apple made it clear last week and several Youtubers advised the embargo was going to end this morning.

I just don't get the decision behind this 5G vs 120hz refresh rate choice. I can notice a difference between a 60hz panel and 120hz panel (iPad Pro, S20, Note 20, etc. etc.), so it is just as real as 5G (which isn't actually real in 2020). So Apple would go for a tech (5G) which is a huge battery drainer, very limited availability and use case instead of a variable refresh rate 120hz panel which is also a battery drainer but at least available most of the time.

Apple knows best about what people want.

Last all day without charging. My XS battery is terrible.

120hz is better for watching video...movies as you get smoother looking picture. It is "refreshing" the image on the screen 120 times per second as opposed to 60 times per second. Downside is that it uses more power...shorter battery life between charges unless you increase the battery size (capacity)...bigger device.
I don't know single creator that releases their videos in 120fps. And when I watch movies on TV, I usuallty set it to 24 fps movie mode, otherwise it would have looked like a home video recording. High refresh screens IMO only make sense for gaming monitors.

The night mode in the TrueDepth cam looks crappy. Why even add it when it looks so awful? Same for the ultra wide. Don’t see any significant improvement there. As to the other cameras any improvement is very minor. Basing myself on iJustine and The Verge reviews.

5G is just got real. Perfect timing for Apple.
Depends on your location. there are countries where 5G has been available for a while (but iPhone won't have mm support over there) and there are many locations where 5G is not available. There is nothing special about Apple timing. For example, T-Mobile users have been able to use (slower version) of 5G on Android phones for quite a while.

Hope that isn’t true. I had heard that the sheer volume of 120Hz displays that meet Apple’s standards created a production bottleneck. Time will tell.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models are beautiful, offer some small benefits to camera, have 5G, but honestly, little else over the 11 Pro. If they have 120Hz displays next year, and hopefully TouchID integrated in to the power button ala iPad Air, I’ll jump to upgrade.
