I have to say, the Verge’s review is not promising. The night mode selfies and video looks pretty terrible imo, especially with those light reflections on the night mode video. They also got 2.5 hours screen time with 20% battery left. Yikes. The upgrade this year just seems less worth it the more I learn about it.

To be fair though these are the midtier phones. The flagship pro isn’t out or reviewed til Nov.

All in all, The Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern said the iPhone 12 lineup represents "one of the biggest iPhone upgrades in years, no thanks to the 5G connectivity, but because of its fabulous-to-hold design and substantial camera improvements."

Joanna is being artificially excited here. "Fabulous-to-hold design"? Really? "Substantial camera improvements"? More substantial when the amount of back side cameras was doubled? Other reviewers characterized camera improvements as being difficult to detect.

Gots to gets 'da clickz - hah

That said, I agree with her about the design. I've been wanting them to go flat sides again since basically my first day with an iPhone 6. I hated the slippery bar of soap rounded river rock routine they went into. It made iPhones feel like generic Android phones to me.

The iP4 design language is, to this day, still the best out there IMO.
I'm very happy to see they returned to it with an updated take on it.

I understand your point. The XS Max is the best of the best, top of the line. However, the 12 Pro still is a “Pro” model and $1000. Personally, I was only interested in downsizing (to the Mini or 6.1 Pro) this year if I did upgrade, so these reviews are important for my own upgrade prospects, regardless of the Pro Max.

The whole article reads like a fluff piece

I ordered an unlocked 12 Pro, and am currently with Verizon. Do I need to get a new sim, or will my existing sim in my iPhone X grant me access to 5G?

I just don't get the decision behind this 5G vs 120hz refresh rate choice. I can notice a difference between a 60hz panel and 120hz panel (iPad Pro, S20, Note 20, etc. etc.), so it is just as real as 5G (which isn't actually real in 2020). So Apple would go for a tech (5G) which is a huge battery drainer, very limited availability and use case instead of a variable refresh rate 120hz panel which is also a battery drainer but at least available most of the time.

Apple knows best about what people want.
To me even if 5g is limited, it’s a killer feature...much more do than 120mhz. But to each their own.

Please elaborate on how it's a "killer feature"? What's so "killer" about it? What's it going to change for users that they don't already have right now?

If you care so much about the camera maybe you should buy a camera, not a smartphone that has a built in camera.

5G does not offer much to the users for now. It is valuable though as a future proofing feature. People who are hesitating whether to upgrade their phones this year or not (for reasons other than 5G) would hesitate way more if 5G was not there.

The 12 pro is hardly pro if the camera isn’t the same as the flagship. Sorry. It’s just pro in name only.

The max has a 47% larger sensor for wide which is what most use. 87% better low light. Sensor shift OIS. 5x optical zoom vs 4x for the midtier.

Biggest Improvement is the Camera Seems like Apple has done some cost cutting. Hopefully the battery is not smaller as there is no mention of the size anywhere for any model.
Reviews on the 5G are mixed and 5G is in its infancy so what can you really expect
All in All I would have been happier to see both Touch and Face ID In the iPhone

Apple’s own 5G implementation makes it useless (not functioning) with dual-SIM iPhones. They could have easily waited for another year, IMO.
That issue will be sorted by a software update reported to arrive later this year, si it's at worst a teporary issue.

This is a case by case basis and is location dependent, but as the 5G deployment firms up speed, latency, bandwidth to name a few benefits over 4G/LTE.

So your comment about it being a "killer" feature is heavily subjective based on the end user and their location? So it's not a "killer" feature if it's location dependent. Such a feature would change how users work and interact with the device. Much like Touch ID/Face ID was a killer feature.

This. I have a Fuji XT2 myself (probs will update when the 5 comes out.).

The most interesting thing about many Apple fans (and name brand loyalists) is that they don't care about anything until Apple puts it in? Like, you went 10 years without caring about widgets and now care.

Like I understand getting the best device available, but I just find it weird things become a must just because Apple says its new.

120hz is better for watching video...movies as you get smoother looking picture. It is "refreshing" the image on the screen 120 times per second as opposed to 60 times per second. Downside is that it uses more power...shorter battery life between charges unless you increase the battery size (capacity)...bigger device.
I might be an isiut, but with most videos being <60fps why does the screen need to be refreshed more often, we are not talking about an old crt were the phosphor only gives off light for Nms after the beam hits it, the pixel stays lit as long as it receives power, for other things like fast scrolling or fast paced gaming I can see the use of high refresh rates, but for mos video, not so much) what am I missing?

As much as 120mhz is subjective as being "killer" or "necessary".

Cell service has never been anything but subjective and location dependent. And as much as where I live, I won't see much of the benefits of 5G (or so I believe), when I travel into those areas that support mmwave or even plain old 5g, I would expect to see a better overall performance than 4G. To me, in my subjective opinion, that is worth more than 120mhz screens. (And yeah, hope Apple includes 120mhz screens in the future as well as touch id in the power button and other features)
