iPhone 12 Pro Reviews: New Design and Camera Improvements More Compelling During Early Days of 5G

I just don't get the decision behind this 5G vs 120hz refresh rate choice. I can notice a difference between a 60hz panel and 120hz panel (iPad Pro, S20, Note 20, etc. etc.), so it is just as real as 5G (which isn't actually real in 2020). So Apple would go for a tech (5G) which is a huge battery drainer, very limited availability and use case instead of a variable refresh rate 120hz panel which is also a battery drainer but at least available most of the time.

Apple knows best about what people want.

A wider range of buyers know 5G, they don't know what it is, but they know it's one more than 4G... I don't think all that many people are familiar with panel refresh rates. Just my opinion, but the choice of 5G over 120hz feels like a choice the marketing department made.

I'm very cynical about this because everything else Apple has done this year indicates to me that 120 Hz displays were scrapped early on as a cost saving measure. In other words, the already ridiculously expensive iPhone Pro models couldn't get 120 Hz displays because Apple wasn't comfortable with the margin.

i don't think apple balks at profit margin issues. they have a very comfortable margin whatever the components. i would imagine the issue for them re: 120Hz displays is battery life. personally, i don't really care about 120hz. but, i'm not a mobile gamer. now, 120hz on my vr rig, that i'll take.

All in all, The Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern said the iPhone 12 lineup represents "one of the biggest iPhone upgrades in years, no thanks to the 5G connectivity, but because of its fabulous-to-hold design and substantial camera improvements."

Joanna is being artificially excited here. "Fabulous-to-hold design"? Really? "Substantial camera improvements"? More substantial when the amount of back side cameras was doubled? Other reviewers characterized camera improvements as being difficult to detect.

I’ve been waiting for a blue iPhone since 2007 haha!! That Pacific Blue looks perfect!!

Can’t wait for 11/06 Max pre-order!!

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, haha!!

By that logic, 120hz is 60 more than 60hz. So 60 is greater than 1 (5 less 4).

Oh wait, unless we are comparing 5 Grand over 4 Grand. That would make 1 Grand improvement.

I am so confused....

I am really curious...120h hz..how is this 120 hz so important ??? What for, can anyone please explain...
Its one of those things that people don't have so they scream because they don't have it. I have ProMotion on my IPP 11" and I don't know if its doing anything at all. That's why I called Patel a hack for dinging the iPhone 12 Pro for not having it. Who cares?

No. it’s one of those things you don’t know you’ve been missing it until you see for yourself. Just because your eyes don’t find it better, doesn’t mean no ones do.

i mean, have you seriously at least tried to scroll a page using 60 Hz vs 120?

And it will make OLED PWM more bearable.

To each his own. My eyes are quite good and I still don't notice it. But then I don't notice the jag and jitter some pixel peepers here do. I just don't get that invested in it. Its a tool not a miracle. And the device is not "not a Pro device" simply because it lacks this feature.

Period.

Is it possible battery life played a significant factor as well? Apple always tends to find the right balance between tech, performance and user experience.
Yes that's possible, given that the 12 Pro already has less battery life than the 11 Pro. But that hardly excuses them for falling behind on 120 Hz displays for their ultra premium priced models. 120 Hz would have gone a long way toward justifying the Pro models this year and further differentiating from the standard models which have gained ground.

Ugh I keep forgetting it's not 120hz I have note 20 ultra and yes the battery takes time to get used to how you going back using your phone, at least on android. However, I miss apples ecosystem to an extent. I'm a phone junkie ugh I need a meeting ah ha. However, 120hz at least to me you can tell a big difference when I compared it to my xs max. I think apple cut it out for battery life and a course next yr. The cameras have come almost as far as they will imo. I will have to see what they say about the max....5G is fine and yes it will drain battery. It's nothing to write home about right now. I just pray iphone reception improves compared to my xs max.

I've said it elsewhere, ideally, the iPhone 12 should have been sold for the price of Mini, and Mini cost $100 less. But no, it's $200 more for iP 12 vs iP 11, and still 64 gigs.

I can't seem to justify the price of 12, for a little more you get Pro with better Camera software (60 fps 4k Dolby), Telephoto lens, Lidar, 128GB storage, 6 GB RAM, sturdier materials and more premium looking colors.

It's black Mini, Pro or pass for me :).

i beg to differ, “Pro” moniker in this case should imply “top of the line”, the best Apple has to offer.

By not implementing high refresh rate display they send message which says “sorry, guys, we don’t know better”.

I can't figure out what color the Pacific Blue is. I was under the impression it was more blue/green but now I've seen a couple photos of it where it looks just like a light blue.

Other than the cameras and 5G radio, what can the iPhone 12 Pro do that my iPhone X can’t? I’m trying to be open minded to an upgrade, but I can’t find a reason to.
This is more for X & prior with 5.8 inches group. I have XS Max (& of course 11 Pro Max) and not downgrading to 6.1 nor willing to pay more for 6.7 now. I love my perfect XS Max.

I have to say, the Verge’s reviews do not show these phones as promising. The night mode selfies and video looks pretty terrible imo, especially with those light reflections on the night mode video. They also got 2.5 hours screen time with 20% battery left. Yikes. 5G UWB (if you can find it) drains the battery rapidly. The 5G icon shows even when you’re not using 5G.

The upgrade this year just seems less worth it the more I learn about it.
