Just wanted to say retain the 128GB. Still very much happy with my PB Pro Max thnx, maybe it’s the year I skip an upgrade.

used lidar once to try the person height measurement, wasn’t accurate, never used it again
(prob bc in centimeters it’s impossible to be accurate)

also haven’t noticed the camera improvements with lidar

While cool, it just will add another tier on top, so the 1tb will be more than the 512gb. They won't replace the 128gb base with 256gb now.

Look at the iPad Pros, 128/256/512/1TB/2TB options. So many SKUs but it allows to retain high prices for storage upgrades.

IMO the "pro" devices really ought to start at 256gb by now.

Solid update for the mini. Bigger battery, smaller notch, LIDAR, and more efficient X60 modem.

Can anyone explain to me why a portless phone needs 1TB of local storage? Even wireless sync 800GB iTunes library would take at least half a day. If anything that does not need 1TB storage, iPhone is the one. I just don’t think Wifi 6 can match the transfer speed of thunderbolt 4.
When I go for my next iPhone, I will most likely still pick 256GB option. 1TB is for iPad. Even if Apple decides to hamper lower tier iPhone by giving fewer amount of RAM.

Just notice ProRAW. Still. That’s not really justifiable.
I was content with 32 MB in my Nokia 6600 back in 2005, I think. However, when it comes to storage, less is more never applies.

1TB On a Phone is just BEYOND Ridiculous. it's a PHONE. if you want to use it for gaming buy something that does gaming, but 1TB is ridiculous on a Phone, on an iPad you can justify it, but a Phone!....Yea... if you order a 1TB iPhone you really are sadder than sad!

£2k … wow that’s a huge amount for a ‘phone’ - I’m old enough to remember when you could buy a Mac Pro for that kind of money!

When I upgraded from X to 11 Pro I went from 128 to 256. Rationale was more space for movies (aka dvd rips) and photos/home movies storage.

Truth is that I don’t think I’ve actually touched the sides of the extra storage and with ‘Optimized’ iCloud Photos even a near 1Tb library of 50,000 RAW dslr photos works fine on iphone and I still have >50% storage free.

i’ve not copied itunes library to the device ever since moving to Netflix/ATV+ etc

Granted 99% of the time I have good wifi or 4g so accessing iCloud or streaming has worked fine. I can see some heavy videographers needing much more storage for capture though.
I’m usually one for going for ‘the top spec’ but in thai cass i think for mine and many use other use cases it will be overkill. Good to have the option though. I skilled the 12 but unless there’s a new compelling feature I think I’ll go back down to 128 for the iPhone 13 if it tempts me.
X 128 Go has never existed

Things that would make my wallet open:
  • Always-on display
  • Touch ID/Face ID combo
  • Substantially faster processor in conjunction with a compelling new use case (i.e. what is the Lidar really even for?)

you are quite corret. Seems the are/were both 256... So two generations of excessive and unused storage! Time to learn that lesson ha ha.

I had to pull the old X out of the drawer to check what it was. I'd not realised that the X had had so much storage. I think looking at wikipedia, Apple pulled a fast one by not offering the most usable size on that on. I probably went with the same on the 11 thinking I needed it.... but as these things are getting little more expensive than an impulse buy now, it is worth considering whether the actual spec is used or not.

CMs are for ballpark. MMs are for accuracy. Inches are for Antiques and C***s.

Enterprise use cases, digital media, large video collections for instant play without sluggish cloud downloads, a nature videographer with 1080p. I think maybe when you wrote that, what was going through your mind is a casual user. Have you ever seen the billboards in San Francisco saying “Shot on iPhone”? I’d call someone’s life anything but “sadder than sad” for taking a pic in a world famous national park at sunrise feeling the cool wind around them… and being paid for it! That sounds like “happier than happy” to me!

Surely you’ve run into a 10 GB video file in your life. How much do 100 of those add up to? Not a huge library by any stretch, even for a phone. But yes, you are right, not the norm! And the price is not the norm either! :)

I’m one of those people who doesn’t like storing much of anything on their phone, besides apps. I move captured photos/videos to various cloud platforms almost immediately. Everything is just streamed back when necessary.

Sometimes it’s a bit of a pain, but thanks to this my 64GB XS is only half full. As a bonus doing a full iOS restore with the new major version each year is super easy and prevents the ‘Other’ files on my phone from becoming large.

Does anyone know what the relative speed of (recent) iPhone storage is compared to the SSDs on a MBP?

Yes, but don’t forget that cloud storage and ROM are not mutually exclusive. The ROM is the amount of cloud cache capability you have. It’s trivial to exceed the default storage capacity with digital media, especially video. With so much progress going into the camera, storage shouldn’t make its evolution bite the dust. File sizes most often will grow proportionally to quality improvements.

I met an Apple engineer who worked on Camera. I’ve also been inside the campus before (One Infinite Loop, not the new one) and have seen where the development takes place. That’s something even the media doesn’t get to see! It was small offices with people who just loved every facet of the apps they worked on. Someone might be inclined to naively envision that the engineers are all very collaborative across apps. There is a certain degree of collaboration, but most are extraordinarily specialized. One person, one piece of one app.

I bring this up because every element of this phone’s design is deeply considered down to the utter electron. These people are not going to offer something unnecessary. If it’s not meant to be there, they won’t add it in. They build precisely what they want to use. That is what is so great about Apple.

I’m wondering whether they would increase the base storage for the pro line up as well, but with their track record…… I guess we’re still be getting a 128GB base model as usual😂

I do hope they give us a slight storage bump across the options though😂😂😂

1TB is crazy - I have 256GB on my 8 plus and still have over 200 free - now granted I have all my photos and videos on iCloud storage so it helps greatly to have the minimized versions on the phone.

Maximum storage on iPhones have consistently doubled every 2 to 3 years. That there would be an 1TB option is not at all a surprising thing.

12 Pro / 11 Pro / XS: 512GB
8 & X / 7: 256GB
6S / 6: 128GB
5S / 5 / 4S: 64GB
4 / 3GS: 32GB
3G / 1: 16GB

Notice the 2-2-3 pattern. Given that a bigger storage option is an easy money grab for higher-end units as far as Apple is concerned, it would be highly unlikely that the the Pro models of this year's iPhone won't come with double the storage.

That being said, I am eagerly waiting for this upgrade solely on the storage options alone. I realize I'm in an extreme minority, but I do not trust iCloud for storing photos. Thus I have more than 138,000 photos and 2,100 videos shot with the phone on my 11 Pro taking up 448GB and leaving only 22GB of space left. I've been able to leave the photos on the Camera Roll since the 6S days thanks to the storage expansion keeping up with my growing collection.
So, you best hope that something does go wrong with the iPhone where it gets bricked. I will assume and HOPE that you have that all backed up to a local hard drive at home.

If you shoot videos in the ProRAW mode or use it for photography a lot....(professional) you will need that. You would download back at the ranch at the end if the dat.

Nothing in this article says the iPhone 13 will be portless. No rumors on iPhone 13 suggest it will be portless. Portless iPhones are still 3-5 years out at minimum. So what are you talking about?
