Interesting. I never watch videos on my tiny iPhone screen. The minimum screen size for me is my iPad.

Watching a 4k movie full screen on the 6.7 pro however is pretty damn immersive. Im a big screen junkie but my phone is enough of a substitute for my 12.9 iPad when i can't bring it along. The phone also has a better aspect ratio (for modern video) than any iPad so the size difference is further diminished, who cares about extra screen if its displaying a black bar? Id wager watching a movie on a current 6.7 pro would be a better experience than a 9.7 iPad with a 4:3 ratio.

However when I watch old school Family Guy or American Dad the iPads ratio is amazing. Upscaling is a godsend.
+I have no beef with the mini, its just i'd probably not want to watch a movie on it either.

Should be good news for the mini fans as battery life was one of the 12 mini's downside.

As a kid I binged read and watched video on a 3.5' 3G screen because it was cheap.
Somebody somewhere will be real happy.
 
Hopefully this also means that the standby and phone call battery usage will improve as well, not just binge watching rubbish

well no, video streaming does not include phone calls, my friend; they used those words intentionally
 
Sounds like A15 has gotten more hardware video decoders. On my MacBook Air M1, VP9 and AV1 video decoding have higher CPU utilization so suspect it's software decoding which eats up battery faster. iPad Pro M1 gets warm so probably the same situation.
 
I wonder if this means the iPhone 13 base models have 10hz-60hz displays, and Apple simply didn't advertise it. Instead posing it as a battery upgrade.
 
After having an antenna problem with my XSMax and now a problem with the battery on my 12 Pro Max uhhhh I'm going to take a wait and see attitude on the 13's.:confused::confused:
 
I’d consider a 108.33% battery live improvement to be more than baby steps

We still need to see real-world, hands-on experience here. Many new features are exaggerated until reviewers use them daily only to find out performance is more or less the same with 12 series.
 
I saw something about new hardware acceleration for videos on these new chips, I wonder if that’s what’s at play here instead of doing it through software only.

Apple has made much of its iPhone 13 battery life improvements, noting for example that the 13 Pro Max offers the longest battery life ever in an iPhone. However, when you look at Apple's own battery comparisons versus the iPhone 12 lineup, it's the streaming video performance that the company has eked out of its new smartphones that really stands out.

The iPhone 13 lineup features new low-power displays, a more efficient A15 chip, larger batteries, and more power-efficient components, all of which make for dramatic improvements when streaming, as the numbers above show.

For example, Apple claims that when streaming video, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max last nine hours and 13 hours longer than last year's equivalent models, respectively. Taking the same metric, the battery in the iPhone 13 mini manages 13 hours, which is longer than even the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

With video streaming services so ubiquitous these days, not to mention Apple TV+ (and obliquely, Fitness+), Apple has clearly factored the computations involved into the power optimizations that it has achieved through the tight integration of its hardware and software.

Of course, battery life varies by use case and many other factors, so actual results will vary, but if they're anything near what Apple is claiming, binge-watching your favorite show should be a cinch on these latest devices.

Using three times less frequency (25 hz when you watch 25 fps video), new 5 core GPU, probably new specialized decoders (for H265 etc...) and estimated 4200 mah battery in 13 Pro Max makes a difference...

Given that some of us had horrible experience with our iPhone 12 Pro Max batteries, I honestly hope that they have rectified and improved them in the 13 series. :confused:

9 months old, 128 cycle, 89% battery health. Went from amazing 2 day battery life, to needing to use low power mode just to make it through the day on a same usage pattern. As it's not 80% or below, Apple Support Rep said nothing is wrong with my battery and can't (won't) replace it under warranty. Sigh.

iPhone 12 Pro with same exact stats and issues.

Samesies on my 12 Pro Max. 89%.
Same here my launch day Pro Max is at 91%. My wife and dad have iPhones that are 3 years old and they are at 90% and 94% WFT?!?!
