I noticed right after the initial reviews came out, this thing about comparing the 13 to older phones became a thing among almost all reviewers. Almost like Apple sent out an e-mail blast to reporters telling them to get in line with this new messaging. I know it sounds conspiratorial, but there have just been so many of these recently. I remember first seeing Asymco (an Apple stock shill) saying something like the iPhone is the only product compared to its prior year predecessor (which is absolutely not true). Then I think it was Jason Snell at 6 Colors who wrote an article detailing all the upgrades you'd get based on which older iPhone you owned. I didn't watch all of MKHBD's review because I got bored, but it started off with the same spiel about how not everyone upgrades every year so this is actually a bigger upgrade than it seems. He said something about how people don't buy a new Camry every year, so why would you judge a year over year Camry update. And I wasn't particularly looking for these reviews, and those are just the few I remember. It's been a common theme.

There's something sad about people apologizing for a trillion dollar company and making it out like it's a telethon for a worthy cause.

I don't think people are dumb. I do think they know this very obvious point that iterative updates over time add up to a bigger update. I do think this is how reviews for cars, etc., work as well.

I used to watch MotorWeek on PBS which did car reviews, and I can't remember them once saying, "No, don't judge this compared to last year! Go look at the clunker in your garage and then look how much nicer this is!" They would just mention the changes. Everyone knows a new car gets little changes each year, and that new cars are nice.

I upgrade from an iPhone X to the 13 Pro Max and really the only noticable difference (apart from the larger screen) is the cameras. So far it has been well worth it. I've got 4 kids so I'm always capturing them to be able to enjoy when they've grown up and flown the nest.
Here's photos I took of one of my kids standing in the same place at the same time of day 4 years apart. That day being the day I got he iPhone X and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
