I'm pining for an always-on Apple Watch that has a *decent* battery life (i.e. I'm still waiting). I couldn't care less about an always-on display on my phone (which spends most of it's life in my pocket) - it'd be the very first thing I turn off so the phone would last longer.

While I will not be getting an iPhone 13, I do think this is an awesome feature! When I switched from my pixel 3 to iPhone, the feature I missed the most was definitely the always on display. I used to think it was a pointless feature, but it turned out to be really handy. I would say it’s probably not quite as useful if you have an Apple Watch, but lots of people don’t have Apple watches who do have iPhones.

This has been a feature for many Android phones with OLED screen. Since Apple just switched to OLED for iPhones fairly recently (iPhone X), it's not surprising that they are "late" in getting this feature. At the same time, it's quite wise waiting for LTPO for the power savings. iPhone batteries are not as large as Android so anything that requires constant power would need to be considered very carefully.

Everyone is welcome obviously. I’m not even a regular relatively.
But I never understood the anti brand people that hang out at “that brands” forums. Just strange to me.
I would never go to a android forum to talk about cool things Apple does. Is that strange? Am I strange?

You can really like a company’s products without feeling the need to lie about that company being the greatest in the world at everything.

I’ve never understood the people who come on here and fawn as if being nice about Apple will somehow inspire them to improve their products.

My Samsung form years ago had tis feature and it was very nice to have. Glad to see it coming to my iPhone.

I mean 2017 isn't "fairly recently"

Yeah, this sounds like Apple.
They love to hold features back, and drop them slowly into the market, year by year, just to keep fanboys performing their yearly upgrade cycle. Features that could have been introduced many years ago, there is absolutely no technical limitation to not offer the „always on display feature“ to iPhone X upward…

Surely not a crap marketing team, Craig!
You do realize that is the standard consumer electronics methodology perfected by the Japanese and has been how most consumer electronics have been designed and sold for over 40 years now?

Not many reasons to upgrade this fall to the iPhone 13 yet. Apple need to do something remarkable in order to win people over. An always on display is not it

Depends on what one values and what phone one is upgrading from, in addition to upgrade habits

I am far more impressed with this year's purported upgrades than last year. iPhone 12 was a design refresh yes but same notch, we've had OLED for years, 5G mmWave is not available outside of USA...For me, the 12 was a pretty boring upgrade otherwise, and the major camera improvements for the year were limited to the Pro Max model. I did not like the finger print magnet Pro models (they get really gross), I found Magsafe to be good but not great (magnets were quite weak overall), and it felt like a weird half-way upgrade from the 11 series...design and 5G aside, more or less the same experience

This year we actually get Quality of Life improvements, of interest to me particularly 120Hz and purported AoD, in addition to global mmWave, 6GHz-band wifi support, actually improved camera tech across the board

And minor bonus things such as reported less finger print prone Pro models as well as a smaller notch (finally)

Much more exciting than the 12 series for myself. Perhaps not for you, but they've already won "some people" over - just depends on what category you fall in

I think it may be actually true. I was thinking about it a some weeks ago. It could be a natural way to implement the ”always on” display in the new iPhones after Apple Watch. It may be even the same display technology used in iPhone 13 lineup.

Nice!!! - Cue all the comments about screen burn in… 😄🙄
Has anyone seen an iPhone with an OLED screen with burn in? We use android devices at work and I see it occasionally. Guys change the screen time-out settings to the max (30 minutes), despite being told that you can change the lock-out settings to 30 minutes. So I see burned in lock screens and burned and home screens.

I guess that is good for what I'd think is a very small percentage of people, however I don't need my iPhone to have an always on display.
It makes sense on a watch but I"d think it would drain your battery on the iPhone?
Hell as soon as you touch it or move its on anyway, that's fast enough for me!

You think anything anyone says in this forum, positive OR negative a out Apple has any impact on Apples decisions?
On an unrelated note I’ve got some nice oceanfront property in Kansas to sell you…

Yes and new iPhones will have Home Screen widgets. Inspired by iPadOS and definitely not seen on any competing phones ever before. Shut up.
Given that the way the AppleWatch feature works is different than the way many (all?) Android phones do it, yes it makes sense to say this feature is inspired by the AppleWatch.
Not to mention always on screens vastly predate Android phones. Or mobile phones in general.
