Nope... Samsung was inspired by Nokia.
Actually, BOOKS had 'always on' displays before Nokia.
Dead Sea Scrolls had 'always on' displays before books.
Cave Paintings had 'always on' displays before dead sea scrolls.
Reality had an always on display before cave paintings.

So lets just cut to the chase and say that all of this was inspired by the real world a LONG time before any smart phone company existed, and NONE of them can patent/trademark/copyright due to prior art by the creator of the universe. Do you REALLY want to go to a lawsuit against Cthulu? I hear that it isn't only the court he holds in contempt, and his contempt is legendary.

This feature has been on Android phones for years now. It is definitely a new welcome change to the iPhone. I believe the iPhone needs it desperately.

I wonder if it will only be exclusive to the Pro models?
I hope not. That's the type of silly thing that Apple would do, but it used to be available on even low end Windows Phones, many many years ago, and definitely doesn't need any special hardware.

Won’t this cause problems for OLED displays to have something always on? Also, I like mine off at night and this feels like I would have to put my phone facedown instead of charging on its back.

I like the idea of always on. One of my favorite features is tap to wake to see if I have notifications. But now I'm like a Pavlov Dog tapping my screen, especially when I've stepped away from the phone. When I'm at work or watching TV I like the phone on the table in front of me, but I get up and walk around or go to the bathroom so there's another tap when I return. How wonderful would it be to just glance at the phone to see if anything came in while I was away. Come to think of it I'd probably drain the battery less with fewer taps! I do hope Apple lets us customize though, so we can keep it simple or even off at night.

Apple Watch inspired? Lol, making a feature that existed on other devices for a decade sound like Apple's invention, interesting.
Our grandfather clock has an always-on display, too. Not really and invention to be claimed!

Another gimmick to keep people glued to their devices. Once the lobbying in DC ends, Apple will be classified as a health concern. Smart phones are a great tool. Unfortunately people have become so addictive to them it's unhealthy.

Already implemented in Android by using the proximity sensor that turns off the screen when you raise the phone next to your ear during a phone call
Look, I use all kinda stuff, but the G1 did not have a proximity sensor, but the Original Iphone did.

Liked the comment, opinions just for kicks:
The Pavlov’s Dog conditioning experiment analogy hits harder for some reason for me than saying the usual “we have become addicted to gadgets/phones/technology/etc”.

Also, the always-on concept in light of this classical conditioning experiment makes it feel like an even more efficient nefarious conditioning tool.
The outcome and training is the same but the tapping step has been removed!

I've alwasy thought it must be maddening for Android users to see features that they already have re-introduced into the marketplace by Apple, but done better.

iPhone "may feature" this every year ever since the X.
Eventually it is bound to be true, but will it be this year?

Apple Watch? Are you joking?! This feature has been available for years on Android devices. The reality is that iPhone is lagging behind, and it's already a tradition (still no fast charge, no high refresh rate, etc.).

I have the iPhone 12 Pro so there's really no need to upgrade. But I've been upgrading every single year anyway. But this time it's different. I don't want to move on from this amazing pacific blue color lol. And I already know beyond a doubt that this color is gone after the 12. Such a shame.

On the iPhone it's revolutionary and it'll turn out Apple invented it and everyone else copied them.

I like always on. Its a good feature that I enjoyed when I was using a Samsung for a while and one of the key reasons I almost didn’t come back to iPhone. I’m not a fan of tap to wake.

This could be the one feature that makes me upgrade from my 12 Pro Max. I'm done with upgrading because of the slight camera tweaks, they just aren't really worth upgrading every year for anymore.
