The person who claimed they would remove next year was Jon Prosser, who got literally everything else wrong today. So I wouldn’t count on that. They’ll probably just keep shrinking it over time as the tech allows.

Yes less notch, but it will bet a bit faster, have more nits (indoor) and nuts, far sharper, better black, beautifull colour, the most customer focus, the best privacy(..), the best camera and screen, smaller, bigger, better, versatile, expensive, profit,Apples biggest innovation in this event.

I agree to an extent. The camera hole by itself seems odd, at least with the notch it is an expected section of the screen missing. And the in screen camera pixel overlay a la Samsung look awful.
Taller is worse because you are hidding more image when you are watching videos/shows/cinema in horizontal… for me the change is uglier because it remember me the pixel 3 xl. Better to stick with the same notch until remove it completely. Don’t you agree?
i would argue that it’s actually a great design
it’s literally iconic — you can instantly tell the iPhone apart from all the other hole punch / edge-to-edge phones
Jon literally gave the cad files which seem to line up perfectly with the iPhone 13. He really didn’t get much of anything wrong today.

No we don’t. Layouts are relative and the notch area is a safe area you don’t have any control over beyond putting a view or background behind it. Supporting different screen sizes and safe areas is extremely easy for developers.
I'm not a fan of the notch, but I'd take it over the ugly abomination that a hole punch camera is any day.
My android phone has a thin forehead instead of a punch hole for the front camera.
I can live with that. Don't know why, but for some reason the punch hole just don't sit very well with me...

apologies in advance as I am still catching up. How is the screen size not different if the notch is smaller? Does the height increase negate the width decrease?
Hard pass. Keeping my 12 and waiting for the 14. Unlike the new iPad mini 6 (which I ordered immediately) the 13 is the very definition of an incremental update. Should have been called the 12s. The 14 is what we SHOULD have gotten this year...
just looked this is gonna be terrible, most games are built around the notch and some have text right to the bottom of the notch so with a taller notch its gonna mess apps up they will have to re do there app and most will takes ages, what a mess apple screwed up

I wasn't sure about it before I got the phone either, but it really is less intrusive and you can actually tap the icons near the top row, which I always had a problem with in my iphone 11PM. I *never* liked the look of the notch on any phone and I never got used to it! You are sacrificing intelligent interface design for the notch. Because it is poor design. Also while reading, scrolling, using apps, watching video. All of it forces concessions onto an otherwise enjoyable experience, because it is poor design. The way some users here defend the notch is really quite baffling and I equate it to Stockholm syndrome or some type of brainwashing effect.
Everyone was used to the notch as it was... This notch looks like a cheap android phone from 2017, with no real benefits.
So you enjoy the distracting black bar at the top of your device while scrolling/reading the web? Video? You enjoy sacrificing the battery % indicator because there isn’t enough space to provide it? Forcing the user to take extra steps in order to do something as simple as check their battery status?
