Unnecessary extra work for millions of developers.

I think there's a misunderstanding about how the notch works. Have you ever taken a screenshot on an iPhone with a notch? The captured image still has content where the notch appears. So developers are still creating the portion where the notch appears. Therefore a slightly different notch size has almost no impact. It's what... a millimeter taller? Any app that is broken because of that had a poor design anyway.

We're all doing a lot of assuming here just based on a supposed leak.

Apple wants to do a lot of things with the iPhone. But above all, these things have to be feasible and I'm not sure a notch-less iPhone with Face ID is feasible yet.
What RD. They just move the speaker Honestly at this point as much as I have faith in apple but I think they just don’t have the technology to shrink the face time system to remove the notch unless they are willing to compromise on the security

It is an abomination that they’ve kept this aesthetic disgrace for as many years as they have. Another year I am forced to stick to the SE device.

I simply won’t purchase any iPhone with a notch. It is bad design that shouldn’t have ever gone rewarded.
So, what is the alternative? To eliminate the front-facing camera array and dot-projector?

We have to start designing our phones with support for AR, as AR will be the future and Apple can't afford to fall behind when this stuff starts to take off.

I think this is the most disappointing major launch we've seen from Apple. I'm not excited about anything from it.

Plus they need to get a new production company to film it and new writers. It's starting to look and sound very samey and they go off on a tangent describing things to the point of irritation.

reminds me more of that google phone which I hated. just get rid of it apple

5 different generations and they still haven't figured out how to get rid of the notch. Apple is just on autopilot now just riding on their reputation.
I’m not a massive notch hater, but this makes me feel like maybe a bit of that ‘obsessive attention to detail’ is slipping recently - while the notch is a functional necessity not a design feature, I think it’s clear they put a lot of effort into balancing the original iteration as perfectly as was practical. It felt like every curve and angle was selected very deliberately, and the shape was honed to perfection. This one they seem to have changed for the sake of change looks a bit off somehow. It might start to look more normal looking at it everyday, but at a glance it somehow seems more obtrusive despite being slightly smaller.

I spot the notch now and then, but have just gotten used to it.

However, Apple’s R&D budget is probably larger than some small phone companies and yet they haven’t worked out how to better integrate the cameras system yet?

It's real pathetic how apple hides the front of the phone so hard in their marketing materials. Like it took them 3 mins to finally show the front of the phone today when they announced it at the event.

Says something when apple is embarrassed by their own ancient phone design. The pixel 6 will destroy this. Google has a golden opportunity

So next year redesigned iPhones and watches? Bummed out, I wanted to spend some money.

I'm no Apple fanboy. I am an iPhone user but I'm still able to see clearly. With that said, Pixel has and always will fall very short in terms of build quality and support. I feel more comfortable spending this type of money on an iPhone than I do with Google. With Apple, I know I'm getting a well built device which will be supported for longer than it takes me to run to the bathroom. Until Google figures that out they'll continue to waste every opportunity Apple leaves them.

I like a punch hole camera on my Android phone it's FAR less intrusive than a notch.

ok I’m going to challenge this often stated complaint.

the majority of content you or anyone looks at on a phone, or on the TV or the Movie theatres is dead centre.

movies almost always focus on the central part of the screen while our peripheral vision picks up the sides. More evident with this new focus in film that Apple is featured on the pro models. Action films may for a quick moment show you something too or sides of the frames for a quick moment but your eyes see it as a blur. Sci-Fi or space movies like “Passengers” “Star Wars” or “Star Trek” even “Alien” shows you up to 5mins tops for a sense of depth but the moving object of focus always always goes .

as you’re reading these forums or thread I’ll bet on ANY phone or tablet you’re NOT looking at the top of the phone UNTIl you select the bell or want to jumó to the top of the page or on the main macrumors site for news posts or any website to enter a direct URL or a web search/crawl.

heck when you type or swipe you’re still focusing your eyes mostly dead Center of the screen. Short glances goto the top, time, active minimized call status or to jump to the call (yet entering a keypad entry again middle of the screen).

there is a reason our juman eyes are shaped the way they are not like a felines or an insects or arachnids’ eyes.

this ongoing complaint is because you’ve used something where your mind no longer adjusts but it still will in a short time. The use case in all my examples shows a different real word use.

oh and game controls your thumbs are over the screen so you can’t see what’s there anyway - notch doesn’t come into affect there.

Google's new custom chip will ensure that it gets supported for long. Build quality I have not heard that people have issues with Google's build quality, it seems pretty good.

I wonder if we will ever see Face ID tech small enough to fit in the little bezel on top of the phone screen. Why couldn’t they put everything up on top and just not have any notch/camera Cut out at all?
tech not small enough to be pushed up to the edge of the frame?

People are still doing the moan-n-whine about the notch?

This is why there will be increased segmentation between to pro and non-pro lines. The camera module has a substantial improvement in ISO performance, optics for better tele, OIS, better pixel well capacity and hence dynamic range, ProRes, and improved computational photo/video capabilities. On a camera module severely constrained by size this required a significant amount of engineering effort. Unfortunately this is lost on the mass market who will be fixated the notch size and color choices. It's not criticism but just the reality of consumer behavior, in a market that's reaching maturity, where external cosmetics is what people notice and discuss. We saw the same thing when Apple launched the M1 which changed the game but forum discussions were fixated on the MBA bezel size. When the whining died down people eventually appreciated all day battery life and top notch performance in a fanless chassis.
