Either Apple is really good at locking down leaks on new features, or these new iPhones are going to have only the smallest incremental features from last year. It appears those who have an iPhone 11 or 12 will have to search really hard to find a compelling reason to update, which is probably a good thing given how Apple is trying to be more "green".
Exactly what I am thinking

Apple has not previously.
The best example of this was the X (November) to the Xs (September). The only thing they DO allow is an "early upgrade" which simply means you can pay the additional months required to reach the 12 payments point.

I'm on a Pixel 3a as my main phone, I'm considering either a 13 mini, or a 12, but the recent announcements around scanning make me a little hesitant moving platforms, especially dropping $1k CAD on a phone that claims to be privacy oriented. I use a iPad Air 3 because they're the best tablets around, and have used a iPhone 8 in the past.

I am very suspicious of Apple’s recent moves regarding iCloud images. But whatever Apple does, they will still be far more respectful and proactive of privacy than competitors. Their recent moves are very “un-apple”, and disappointing.

Without any evidence, I do feel that Apple was put in a position they couldn’t refuse in regards to pushing in a surveillance infrastructure. It’s not something that I feel that leaders felt was missing and needed to be added. At best, it’s to protect Apple. My $0.02.

The mini is a neat phone too.

Not too much change. I do plan on picking up a 13 mini just because I fear they will stop making mini models in general.

One thing I wish we'd see is high accuracy GPS chips. Broadcomm released one of these a few years ago and a couple Android devices even picked it up.

Why do I want this? No, I don't actually care about centimeter grade accuracy - but what I DO want is the extra satellite coverage and better multi-path handling so GPS signals don't suck in cities with tall buildings. They can regularly be off a full block or two in those areas. It could also help in certain backpacking conditions because of more satellite coverage.

old iPhones = GPS (31 US satellites)
iPhone 4s = added GLONASS (24 Russian)
iPhone 7 = added QZSS (4 Japanese satellites)
iPhone 8 = added Galileo (24 EU satellites.)
iPhone 12 = added BeiDou (35 Chinese satellites)

Looking at the latest iPhone 12 when they added BeiDou, I actually wonder if that phone is now capable of higher accuracy. One of the main requirements to hit those levels was sheer # of satellites. Anything 8 or newer should be pretty good with the extra Galileo coverage though.

Though don't seem to have added L5 band support / dual signal processing that is needed though. Seems Apple is just cheaping out on GPS chips.

The larger battery and performance improvements will be needed for scanning the users' photo libraries for CSAM or child sexual abuse material...

Looking like a totally insignificant upgrade without any new features at all for the non pro. A far cry from the 4, 5, 6, X and 12. I at least hope it has some cool and vibrant colours

Yep. I only buy even revisions of iPhones from now on. I'm looking forward to the 14. Hopefully, the notch will be gone by then.

I'm waiting for the two year major refresh - iPhone 14. My 2020 released Nokia 8.3 5G has the highest number of 5G new radio bands from 600Hz all the way up to 3.8GHz (mmWave) without the price of other branded flagship smart phones. I'm still muffed that iPhone 12 Pros released outside of USA lack mmWave antennas. mmWave will be transmitting this year from our Telco mobile phone towers.

When you're in an Airport and need to download a movie or some other file quickly, yeah it's that useful. 2500 - 3000 Mbps vs. 50 - 300 Mbps is a huge difference.

For when have it and can use it, it really is many times faster then Midband 5G or any WiFi connection your going to have.

Of course that's also assuming the data source will provide the files at that speed and isn't already the bottleneck...

On the other hand, I typically only buy odd revisions of iphones - gives time for the new stuff in the even release to be refined, and the aftermarket has had time to develop and become more competitive. :D

Non pros arent really there to upgrade every year though

IMHO iphones sorta moved into the every-other year upgrade category a while back. Maybe it's just me. My XS continues to work just fine - I was sorta tempted by the 12pro but availability for the costco trade-in deal I wanted was so poor I never got around to doing the upgrade.

I really hope that - besides me - enough people will buy a 13 mini to convince Apple to release mini versions on a 2 year cycle.
