I really thought they'd avoid 13 as they avoided 9.

But whatever number it is, my 11 is looking forward to replacement.

Me too. Plus at some point, iPhone 45 or something gets a little crazy. I do think iPhone (2021) or something makes more sense. The iPhone is the important part of the brand, not the model number (12, 13, 14...etc).

From the MR piece:

A survey from earlier this year suggested that most consumers do not want the devices to be called the "‌iPhone 13‌." 38 percent of survey respondents said that Apple should call its next smartphone series simply "‌‌iPhone‌‌ (2021)," 26 percent thought that the "‌‌iPhone 13‌‌" was the best name, and only 13 percent said that they would like to see the devices called the "‌‌iPhone‌‌ 12S."

Now I see why they might jack the prices up. It’s not to compensate the chip cost, it’s to make for the lower sales since those who don’t like the name might end up not buying the phone as well.

How is iPhone 2021 less crazy than iPhone 45?

It should have been iPhone. That’s it. Add the year in the labels on the box.

They typically release the new phones in the Autumn. Who would want to buy a 2021 phone in 2022?

Me, because that’s the way I would get rid of the Apple tax. 😂

But I’m saying do it like how iconic cars do.

Jeep.

2021, 2099, that’s all specifics to be discussed when buying. They don’t call their products:

Jeep.
Jeep mini.
Jeep Pro
Jeep Pro Max (this would be Jeep Compass).

Today, they’d be:
Jeep 12
Jeep 12 mini
Jeep 12 Pro
Jeep 12 Pro Max

I think Apple lost the naming plot ever since they started releasing the different sizes.

13 is actually my wife’s lucky number, so I’m getting her this for sure. Hopefully they still have purple!

S phones just sends the wrong impressions. Certainly when this year seems bigger than last year

13 is a bad number in China. And we know Apple loves China’s money. Even if it means going against decent principles.
Only half right. Has good and bad connotations in Chinese numerology depending on the circumstances. 14 OTOH is an absolute no-go.

This photo looks suspicious, the font seems too bold.

And I’m surprised. Given Apple skipped iPhone 9 cause of the negative connotation in some cultures I thought they’d do the same for 13. I was hoping for it to be called 12s.

that’s not at all why they skipped iPhone 9

Or 2
Or 3 (3G =/= 3)

Apples marketing team does not skip numbers based on stuff like that. There was simply no 9 to be had, especially once they branded the X

The horizontal green pull tab also doesn't look like what's found on Apple's current iPhone packaging. Apple could change it up this year, of course, but that design is more typical of smaller thin cardboard boxes that aren't shrink-wrapped, like Apple's cases, chargers, and of course AirTags.

As others have pointed out, superstition had nothing to do with Apple skipping the iPhone 9. It was entirely marketing.

The "iPhone X" was revolutionary, and therefore deserved to kick off a whole new generation of naming. In fact, I feel like Mac OS X would have been called the same thing back in 2020 even if there had never been a Mac OS 9.

If Apple was concerned about superstitions, they would have skipped the iPhone 4 years ago, and even iOS 14 last year. The number "4" is very unlucky in China as it sounds like the word for "death." In fact, some Chinese folks take this so seriously that they won't use the number "4" in any buildings. However, Apple had no shortage of Chinese customers lining up to buy the "iPhone Death." 😀

However, to give you an idea of how serious this is for some folks, many Chinese buildings avoid all references to the number 4, so you won't see a 4th, 14th, 24th, or 34th floor, and the really tall buildings jump from 39 straight to 50. It also isn't used in any individual unit numbers either. Chinese builders even do that outside of China — some friends of mine live in a condo here in Toronto that's exactly like that. It's quite crazy, as the number 4 isn't found anywhere in the building — even the numeric keypad on the lobby intercom omits the number (the button is there, but it's blank).

Have you ever visited a car dealership?

I drive a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys Wheeler Edition.

Okay, let me the first to start this rumor.

The new iPhone will release on September 24. Instead of iPhone 13, it will be called the Apple iPhone Asimov Foundation Edition.

My sources for this rumor are as solid as many other leakers’. i.e., nonexistent.

(It would be fun if it happened, though.)
