This photo looks suspicious, the font seems too bold.

And I’m surprised. Given Apple skipped iPhone 9 cause of the negative connotation in some cultures I thought they’d do the same for 13. I was hoping for it to be called 12s.
That's not why they skipped the iphone 9, it's because they wanted to emphasize the biggest redesign on an iPhone yet. (and it was also the 10 year anniversary of the original iPhone)

From the MR piece:

A survey from earlier this year suggested that most consumers do not want the devices to be called the "‌iPhone 13‌." 38 percent of survey respondents said that Apple should call its next smartphone series simply "‌‌iPhone‌‌ (2021)," 26 percent thought that the "‌‌iPhone 13‌‌" was the best name, and only 13 percent said that they would like to see the devices called the "‌‌iPhone‌‌ 12S."

Now I see why they might jack the prices up. It’s not to compensate the chip cost, it’s to make for the lower sales since those who don’t like the name might end up not buying the phone as well.
Just because they don't like the name doesn't mean they won't buy them...
We'll still be forking over our cash as usual. 🤣

13 is a bad number in China. And we know Apple loves China’s money. Even if it means going against decent principles.
4 is a bad number in China, yet there was an iPhone 4 and even 4S.
13 has no special meaning in China, that one is reserved to Western superstition.

This is just a 12S upgrade for 2021. Apple should allow free upgrades for those who are 12 owners even if you are in a device payment plan.

Nothing wrong with the number 13 in China. However 4 is considered VERY bad.

You’ve seen the presentation already?
Leaks all over the internet over the last several months confirmed name, specs bump, design, features, cam. This upgrade is aimed at 11 and older phone users. The camera will be negligibly better than 12. A14 vs A15 roughly a 20% diff. Come on, you can’t kid yourself to say this is leaps and bounds better than what I have now. The only thing missing is the 120Hz ProMotion. That would complete my 12 Pro Max. Low light performance and zooming shots need to be more improved for 13.

This shaping up to a far bigger upgrade than 11 to 12. So that’s why I don’t really see this as an S year.

120hz, AOD two features more than we had last year. Last year it was boxy design and camera upgrades.

True but lets be honest, rarely is one model year leaps and bounds better over the next. As much as I know I’ll be disappointed, I’ll wait to see what they have to announce. Heck, I have a XS and there’s been nothing in the last two models that make me go “OH!”.

How is iPhone 2021 less crazy than iPhone 45?
Because we know they come out every year and it's the iPhone Pro or Max part of the name that's important. And the year it came out. Remembering what year the iPhone 5s came out is a little tougher than the iPhone (2013).
