Yeah, but what use is it in the real world?
Depends on your personal 'real world' I guess. My world includes a great deal of photography. As for usefulness, I use macro mode to take sharp photos of my fish for diagnostic and treatment purposes, for example. I imagine that you can think of a number of tiny things you'd like to be able to see up-close and in focus.
 
Apple says that a forthcoming update, due in the fall, will allow users to specifically turn off automatic camera switching when shooting macro photography at close distances.

Good news! My closeups seem to be in exactly the camera's 'switch over' spot... the second the lens focuses, it switches to the other lens and goes unfocused! Huge frustration. Being able to manually choose the camera would take care of my #1 issue with the camera. (I'd also like a manual focus mode, if Apple is listening here!)

In any case, the cameras are really a joy.
