I’m actually surprised that Samsung is still king in the pentile-OLED market.

It's so Apple. Hold back a feature to make it a feature next year.

I'm guessing the 13 will have a slightly smaller notch...in this case, a cosmetic feature.

From what I have heard, Apple could have used Samsung's natively-developed LTPO technology for the iPhone 12, but they felt it was not up to their standards. So as someone noted up-thread, Apple is probably using their own LTPO technology for the iPhone 13 and having Samsung Electronics manufacture it for them as they have the production scale Apple needs (where LG does not, even though they have been using Apple's LPTO process on the Apple Watch).

We saw something similar with the iPhone X. Apple used Samsung Electronics to create the OLED panels, but those panels utilized Apple's Precision Display Calibration and these Apple panels were higher quality than those Samsung Electronics was supplying to Samsung Mobile for the Galaxy series (as DisplayMate testing subsequently showed).

They could but battery life would have been bad...LTPO needs to be there for better battery life

Samsung were unable to supply enough panels for ltpo...so had to wait this year they also wanted to debut it on their own devices first
 
both my series 5 and series 6 struggled battery life wise. normally from 7am til 23:30pm it's on about 20% by the time I go to bed so not great but I charge every night anyway so not a big deal but still would be nice if it was better certainly if I did some workouts
I had the series 4 and waited for the 6 because I really wanted to have the always on screen just because especially at work, if i am carrying something and I can't lift my arm. When I got the 6 was just as they released the new OS and battery life just plain sucked! It got better after the .2 release. I think if it could be better....that would be better too.

That is what I thought, as well, but a number of members chimed in that production yield was not the issue (especially if Apple limited it only to the Pro and Pro Max) but that Apple wanted a "better" panel so they could use it as a differentiator from the Galaxy line.

I think Samsung were also playing hard ball and wanted to debut it on the note 20 ultra and fold 2 first as well before letting apple have it

1. On your iPad Pro, go into Accessibility, Motion and turn ON Limit Frame Rate

2. Use your iPad Pro fully for around 5 minutes.

3. Go back into Accessibility and turn OFF Limit Frame Rate

4. Observe the results.
Still not the massive difference that the tech nerds and youtubers make it out to be.
 
I have a 10.5” iPad Pro with 120 Hz too. I don’t really care much about the 120 Hz part. I suppose the variable refresh display feature is nice for power savings, but 120 Hz per se isn’t very interesting to me on my iPad. Maybe it would be more useful if I was editing video more often though.


I just got an Apple Watch Series 5 and the always-on-display is the feature I like the most. I don’t think I could ever get a Watch without it. Battery life needs to be better though.

I look forward to the day when my phone has an always-on-display too, with good battery life, but I’m 99% sure that the iPhone 13 series will not get it. It may be like the Watch, where the S4 got an LPTO display but not always-on. Always-on didn’t come until S5.
May I ask what some of your biggest upsides are to having an always on display? I understand people will want it, but I fail to see what having a display on when you're not looking while it drains the battery for the user.

120hz is one of those things that I’ve always thought is nice, but is not a deal breaker. I had it on an iPad Pro a few years ago, and yeah I got slightly smoother scrolling, but I wasn’t like “this is a feature I NEED to have”.
 
To be fair Samsung's manufacturing arm has nothing to do with the product team. Samsung mobile is a customer for Samsung display just like Apple is.
That is true, their phone/tablet business is minuscule compared to their overall business. They manufacture all kinds of electronic components for many companies, along with appliances, medical equipment, ship building, etc.

May I ask what some of your biggest upsides are to having an always on display? I understand people will want it, but I fail to see what having a display on when you're not looking while it drains the battery for the user.
1) I can just glance at the watch to tell time, without having to do a wrist flip. Being forced to do a wrist flip just to tell time is annoying.

2) Looks. When the Watch is just black, I just don't think it looks very good. BTW, I also got the 40 mm for my 172 mm wrist. I don't like the look of oversized watches either. 44 mm plus only black screen screams geek-gadget. 40 mm + always-on display looks closer to a proper watch.

Arguably no features are “needed” anymore on phones. What feature from the 12 Pro is worth upgrading compare to an iPhone X?
 
As usual already enjoying this LTPO technology on the note 20 ultra. Also 120 hz is a big differentiator and the iPhone needs it (enjoying this as well).

 
Would absolutely love for this to happen.

Once I used 120 Hz on the iPad Pro, there was no going back for me.

I’m terrible with these kinds of things. I can’t really notice a difference between 1080p and 4K

The XDR display looks no different to an iMac display to me.

As for ProMotion, I used an iPad Pro next to an Air and could tell no difference at all between them.

I think a lot of it is just marketing talk and to try justify price increases. I bet 95% of people won’t even notice it.

I am in agreement with you. For a short time I had a regular iPad 2018 before quickly upgrading to the iPad Pro 2018. Although I'm sure there is a difference with the 120 hz refresh rate I was unable to notice it in my usage between the two iPads. I have an iPhone 7 Plus as my daily driver and don't really notice any difference between the screens. If the 120 hz screen increases the cost of the phone I hope they leave it off of some models so we get a choice. I'm hoping for an iPhone Mini that prioritizes battery life before any other feature like processor, screen & 5G capability.
 
Great! once you see the difference between 120 Hz and 60 Hz you don’t want to go back. Hopefully with a smaller Notch and Touch ID. This would be a great upgrade on the display site :)
