Not surprised. The carrier deals are really good right now; and theres obviously a large push to get people into 5G.
I was ready to wait until the 14 but Verizon offered me $1k trade-in for my 12p. That means I'm only paying tax and activation. I am out $270 worth of monthly credits from my last upgrade so this isn't sustainable as an annual cycle.

This seems like a pretty flawed way to analyze demand. You have supply shortage to consider, and the idea that there aren’t less phones available at launch this year compared to last year isn’t easy to believe, given how several other industries have been hit.

You already think it’s worth it? You haven’t even received the product yet… Nobody haven’t even reviewed it yet and still you comment here that you bought 2 iPhones and try to convince yourself it’s worth it. Jesus Christ the world is weird these days.

Well, maybe they use their iPhones almost every day.

Maybe they pay about $1000 every year just for cellular phone contract.

Maybe they compare features and their income and their own desires.

They could wait for a few months, or buy it right at the release date.

What I think is weird is when people hold off until "Black Friday" to save $50.00 :)

There are a lot of us Apple fans who want to get the latest and greatest - maybe a new Quentin Tarantino is buying a couple of these and will get a head start on creating the latest "Reservoir Dogs" type movie with lots of that "barrel focus" cinematic technique. Just having a chance at shooting an Academy award winning movie might be why it's "worth it" - I mean it's plausible!

Maybe some guy has something really cool he wants to show the world using macro photography. Getting the iPhone a day or a month earlier means he can show the world something really interesting, that much sooner! Worth it? Sure it is.

What's weird is when people do not value their own time.

What are the lines outside the Apple Stores looking like this year?

I think it comes to the stores on Friday the 24th - so check into that a day before.

Those lines probably won't be as big - Covid Pandemic for one, and these pre-orders mean it is not really necessary - but I think some people enjoy it because it's like a camping trip tailgate party or something :). I sorta did it like in 2009ish - get up at 3AM and line up with other nerds and chat. It was fun. Go home with the new toy. Go buy aapl stock and get crazy rich. Good times!

Not sure this years sales have been as strong as others, it took a while for the phones to slip to a later delivery date .. September 24th delivery date was there for a long time..
I think last year was the first year where day 1 you got $1k for a trade in of an older phone. Stacking on top of this with $500 per line for switching is new this year I believe.

Haven't been super happy with ATT so switching back to Verizon and the offer essentially paid for the phone. Without this, I would have waited until next year to switch.

I am no Analyist, but I recall watching availability last year and not seeing as many models still available for day one pickup this late in the preorder process. Amazed to see even the new colors available still today.

There are even various Pro Max phones (not pictured) available too.

Apple uses Phobio for trade ins. I assume Phobio will resell them. The carriers also sell “refurbished” phones. I expect they’ll be selling them too.
That makes sense. I would assume that the "seeking refurbs" will only apply to fairly current models. I will assume that the rest got for e-recycle.....to get that "used gold" they were mentioning :)

Look to maybe backtrack, I will probably get this phone and try my best to hold out on the 14 and get the 15 which will be even juicer or a fold - but done to apples standard ✅

Can’t believe smaller notch is now considered a feature. Considering they don’t even show battery percentage even with the extra space.
well, it is a feature — it will leave more screen real estate for when you're watching a video or playing a game. every change is listed as a feature, i think it's ok. also, i'm hoping they will add the percentage in with a software update. who knows — perhaps it will be there out of the gate.

Absolutely. It should not be difficult to understand that at a certain income, a few grand a year for the latest technobauble is no more consequential than upsizing a latte for most people. No judgement, it's a simple recognition of human behavior.

The carrier deals are pretty nuts this year. I expect that helped a lot with demand. Plus a lot of people with extra cash laying about. Due to not being able to go out much, vacation, &c from the pandemic.

Although with all these trade ins. I wonder what that's going to do to the used iPhone market?
The used iPhone market will be just like the used car market - ROBUST as all get out. The carriers and third party sellers will be clamoring for older model iPhones.

This hits the mark.

Further to that - Not everyone is a coupon discount shopper looking to get the best deal. I get it that some people take a certain pride in being thrifty and are proud of their “hunting abilities” to find the sweet spot in the product line up and the most ideal time to make that purchase. That’s just fine too. But it doesn’t mean that the guy who takes 2 seconds to simply order a maximum configuration iPhone or MacBook Pro is being foolish either - it is also fine.

By mid-morning PST, ship times were already slipping into October; not sure that is "took a while"?

It will be interesting to see how long the current demand is maintained.

Absolutely, it’s a key thing for the stock actually.

The wall street suits might be looking only at numbers estimates.

year over year quarterly beats can seem very difficult to achieve with Apple because they have had the worlds most profitable quarters for the last several years every quarter blowing our minds.

The way Apple can beat last year over year order comparisons is this comparatively earlier iPhone release - orders piling up since Friday and deliveries on the 24th. It’s likely more than $1 billion per day added to the revenue. So an extra 10 or $20 billion to this current Quarter helps :). I think it’s a good bet.

The Christmas Quarter I think will be another monster as well.

note that there is no “chip shortage“ problem for Apple! They run a tight ship!

C'mon everyone knows the reality is there's a shortage of units...

Or it could just be that iPhones are THAT popular. Not like this doesn't happen every single year or anything. If you put out a good product and make it desirable, guess what? Lots of people will buy it.
