HA!! I created an account here JUST to say that I have the SAME f*cking issue. I was so happy to see your post. I mean, happy that I wasn't the only one I guess. Not happy for anyone dealing with this.

I wasted 2 f*cking hours talking to Apple, and only the third person finally understood what I was telling her and agreed to replace my device. What a major pain in the ass. I ended up waiting until night-time to take a photo with my EOS M50.

My 12 Pro Max under the same conditions did not exhibit this issue. Neither did my 11 Pro Max, or Xs Max. Last year I bought 2x 12 Pro Max's (one gold, one silver). Ended up opening the silver, and after seeing the gold in-store decided to keep the silver. So I returned the gold unopened. This year I only ordered the Sierra Blue 13 Pro Max. I think next year I'll buy two again, in case I experience this same stupid display issue. Hopefully ONE of the two devices will be fine. Who knows.

Replacement device order was entered on Friday, October 1st. Still no shipping notification for replacement device. Odd, because I'd expect Apple to have some inventory set aside to handle warranty replacements due to these and other issues.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Gotta love the censorship here 😆. Oh no, "strong" language! Run and hide.

Worth noting: the issue is most apparent when NightShift (maximum warmness) and Dark Mode are enabled, and with absolute minimum display brightness (e.g. while in bed, with lights out, reading things until I fall asleep). Also visible at slightly higher brightness levels.
For the replacement, did they make you return the old first before shipping new one or is it an AC replacement?

LOL, so helpful :).

I tried that, and it does seem to "fix" the issue. By fix I mean "mask" or "not highlight". The underlying issue remains. I shouldn't have to turn those two things off. And the settings I described I used on my 12 Pro Max for 10 months with zero issues :).
I’m sorry, but you can’t have night shift and True Tone turned on, then complain about having a yellow screen lol. turn them off, your problem will go away.

I love the 120hz, but have noticed after a few days that the screen uniformity of my 13Pro is significantly worse than my outgoing 11Pro. This is especially evident at night with low brightness (say 10% or so). For example, in Apollo the left to right, green to red tint is extremely noticeable and irritating. I am going to return this unit but may wait a few weeks (months) for the factory to improve on this. Unless this is within tolerance for OLED displays and you have to just live with it, which would really suck since I'm not looking forward to playing the panel lotto.

I'm sorry, but you must not be good at looking at attachments. With True Tone and NighShift on, there is STILL a color gradient on the screen. A gradient which is a pain in the ass when reading in the dark. A gradient that did not exist on my 12 Pro Max, or 11 Pro Max, or Xs Max, with the same settings. I never had issues with my 8+, 7+, 6S+, or 6+, for what it's worth, but they have LCD's. So yes, I certainly can complain about it. It's a problem that doesn't have to exist (as evidenced by the lack off issues on my previous OLED iPhones). Not only can I complain, but I did complain and will receive a replacement device. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a more uniform panel. Maybe I won't. For 1,200 f*cking dollars plus tax, it's certainly worth a try.

Here’s some photos of my display.

The photos were taken at around 25% brightness using grey backgrounds in a stock iOS app - in this case, Settings (the 3rd image is a zoomed in screenshot of the Settings background from the 1st)

Typically photos make the issues look more pronounced than in reality, though in this case I’d say the they’re pretty accurate, albeit the display was not as bright as the photos would imply. Something else the camera couldn’t capture was the subtle flicker I see across the screen under these conditions.

I’ve never had this issue before on my iPhone X or 12, Both OLED, so I’m not sure how bad this is on a scale of ‘Keep It’ to ‘Get That to the Apple Store, and Fast!’ I know in reality nobody here can really answer the question for me, but if you want to share your opinions based on the photos please do.

As per my previous post, I’m reticent to play the screen lottery with Apple again because I know it’s most likely going to end up being a long and drawn out process (especially since this one is on finance) with little to no improvement.

I’m also really anxious to take it to the Apple Store and have them not see the issue, deny it’s existence, or have me try and reproduce it in store (which just wouldn’t be possible under the stores bright lighting conditions) and me look like an idiot.

At the same time this is the most expensive damn smartphone I’ve ever bought and now, every time I use it, it’s all I see whether subconsciously or not.

This is what I get for upgrading from my perfect iPhone 12 that I could’ve kept but didn’t because I convinced myself I’d need a better camera and screen *shakes head*

Instant return or exchange for me
Thanks. I've got an Apple Store appt. for tomorrow now. Fortunately my store has a lot of appointments available.

I came to the obvious realisation that I won't have an issue returning it as I'm within 14 days, so that's another weight off. I don't think my store has any iPhone 13 Pro Max models in stock though, so I may be stuck with this one until that time which is fine with me as long as I know it's getting dealt with.

Mine looks same as your tbh but I think yours may be slightly worse. I don't have uniformity issues until I hit like <5% brightness. I don't plan on returning mine because like you, I don't think it's worth it. I'm of the opinion that it's a pretty common flaw of the OLED technology. A lot of the people in this thread aren't running the tests properly anyways.

For me the flaw is most prominent when displaying this video (linked below) at the 20% grey section at 0% brightness in a pitch black room. My edges are darker and centre is brighter. Curious to see if anyone in the same conditions has a perfect screen. A lot of people are running light grey and taking photos of it saying it's uniform. Mine is like that too, you have to display a darker shade to really show the issues.

There are plenty of high end OLED TV's out there that also exibit the issue so the argument that "oh I payed a fortune for this phone I should expect a perfect screen" may not the most accurate. OLED tv's cost 4 - 5 times as much and still have the issue. It really is a lottery at the end the day. If the manufacture threw away all the not perfect screens I don't think they could make any profit at all. Because the fact is under normal viewing conditions it's a non existent issue. If it is then yes return it.

Not saying that perfect screens don't exist out there I think they do, but I also think a handful of them will have uniformity issues and hence it's not worth returning. Might end up like you exchanging 4 - 5 times which I don't think it's worth it. Here is the link, sorry if I ended up triggering anyone.

I think Ours are similar, but its really only an issue on specific grays below like 20% that its noticeable at all and really along the edges of the right side.

Your original post funnily enough actually convinced me NOT to go do the panel lottery with Apple this year. Supply is so constrained this year in particular and it seems fairly common to see to, from very minor to severe.

is your replacement coming via AppleCare or online store?
I've never purchased Apple Care (have never needed it either, fortunately). I got lucky and implored the lady I spoke to to have Apple eat the $30 "Express Replacement" charge, since it was a device defect and not my doing. Also the alternative would be to return the phone, and wait 1 month for a replacement if I were to return and rebuy. I pre-ordered the phone online, straight from Apple.

If it weren't for the fact that lead times are ~1 month and there are none in stores, I'd have returned it and repurchased already ¯\(ツ)/¯. I have to say... I think next year I'm going to do what I did with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and just buy two... f*ck it. Maybe three, who knows. If I open the first and the display is crap, at least I have the opportunity to play the "screen lottery" without leaving the f*cking house or spending 2 hours on the phone with two Apple representatives who just don't get it (despite photos provided), only to get lucky with a 3rd representative who was able to understand the issue and do something about it thankfully.

3 different pro maxes with a grey screen. Left one definitely had the red going on
The screen in the middle of Your picture is quite similar to mine. A slight shift from top to bottom (slight green to slight red). Reading black text on white background makes it kind of obvious...

Would You all consider this as typical and not worth returning (screen in the middle)?

Hi everyone! I am truly relieved (but saddened) to see I’m not the only one who spotted issues with the display of their new iPhone 13 Pro Max. Based on earlier pictures in the thread, I feel like mine is probably one of the worst…

My boyfriend bought one too, the exact same day as I did, and his device’s display is flawless *jealous*

I attached a picture below and have an appointment later today at my local Apple Store. I’ll keep you updated on what the genius says.

Wow, that is *really* filthy. YUCK. Get rid of that phone. Good luck!

Got a warranty replacement and as soon as I saw it I was just “uuuugh”. The original was fine, as were the last like 5+ iPhones I’ve had.

The advisor told me they’d set up a repair for this one after they receive the original, but I’m weary until they actually do it because they have to be willing. It’s probably within spec, most probably wouldn’t notice or care, but it’s agony for me to use.

Hey did you receive yours through apple care? How long did it take to get it?

Took mine to the store today, and the Apple Genius was very sympathetic and agreed that he could see the issue. He took the phone into the back of the store and turned out the lights so he could reproduce the issue. I managed to get a like-for-like exchange and the new one is a lot better :)

Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect, but perfection was never the goal here - just to have something that sat within my own tolerance levels.

This one's a keeper I think!

It’s the best one I’ve seen out of 5. Calling it a keeper. I was actually using the one on the right dispite being more yellow since it seemed more uniform but it had that ugly red gradient on dark grey backgrounds like the maps app or settings app in dark mode. As for the slight pink to green shift, it’s not as noticeable in person and if it does get bothersome just tilt the phone a tiny bit and it’s uniform. So that’s more of an angle thing. I’d say keep that one if your greys are good

** UPDATE **
Just like a few others, the genius took my iPhone in the back store and recreated the circumstances under which it was the most noticeable. He (easily) agreed that there was a blue hue in the left bottom corner and proceeded to replace my device.

I’m writing this from my new replacement iPhone 13 Pro Max which, hopefully, has a better screen uniformity than the previous one. I’ll see later today when dark enough; I’ll keep you updated once again!

My 13 mini has the exact same issue - nonuniformity with a large red area over the right side of the display! I love the phone otherwise, but I read in bed and this nonuniformity is driving me crazy. My 12 is very uniform, but overall the display has a noticeable green hue.
Ok, so I returned my mini because the screen was driving me crazy. And as a result I got the 13 pro instead. Wow! The phone is bigger than I’d like, but the screen is perfect (completely uniform and no green tint). The zoom lens is also pretty sweet, and the 120 Hz screen is incredible. It makes my old 12 look so jerky in comparison. I’m keeping this one.
