I wish they’d just give me the option of a completely flat back with a huge battery to fill up the extra space and just charge a couple hundred extra bucks for it.

I've still got an iPhone 6s and will likely be upgrading this next round. The thing that worries me is the monster size and protrusion of the camera bump compared to the "pimple" bump on mine. If I have the new phone sitting flat on the table and tapping buttons on e.g. the calculator apps, how does the phone not wobble annoyingly with every button push? I guess it wouldn't be an issue if you use a case, but if you don't...

Ever since iPhone got into triple cam business they really did drop the ball with camera island. Complete anti-design. Putting huge rings and glass around cameras to make them look bigger and better is also a bad move.

I want to trade in my X in the new couple of years but I cringe at the thought of paying around $1,000 again. Yes, I know I don't have to get the top model, but I keep mine for years and get more storage on them so I'm not up against it halfway through the lifecycle.
Well, if you don’t mind having to choose between 6.1” and 6.7”, then I’d say it is worth waiting one or even two more years, because ARM v.9 is around the corner, and the periscopic cameras will be a huge improvement. Also, the notch will be gone or significantly reduced by then.

I will buy in september because no 5.4” iPhone in 2022, and because the battery of my old iPhone is already old and would need a replacement. And I want an iPhone mini.

bigger bump is probably going to mean awesome photos though... add a case and you wont even notice.

Photos were awesome enough about 4 years ago. And what if you don't want a case. Apple could make the device as thick as required to contain the bump, then we'd have more battery. Wonder if they've ever actually asked people if thinness is a big decision maker.... hmmmmmm

Information and alleged CADs of the upcoming iPhone 13 series, shared in a video from EverythingApplePro, indicates that Apple plans to make this year's iPhone camera module significantly bigger, likely to make way for larger sensors and sensor-shift stabilization.

For the iPhone 13 mini, the CAD shows a diagonal camera setup for the 5.4-inch form factor iPhone. Specific measurements from the CAD say that the camera setup will protrude 0.99mm more than the iPhone 12 mini, and be 3.06mm longer in width, and 0.14mm shorter in height. The overall iPhone 13 mini body will be 0.26mm thicker.

Oooh yeah baby. Last year of the Mini and guess what?

You get the secondary camera you've been wanting in a small form factor that fits in your hand (just like the SonyEricsson Cybershot phones back in the day).

Taller camera bump = better telephoto lens (also why it's diagonal design - needs more space)
Thicker body = bigger battery maybe 30% increase? Pls?!)

If so ... I'll buy it. I'll begin using it when my 12 mini has died it's 6TH death replacement. The majority of us iOS users upgrade every 2-3yrs ... our phones last 5-6yrs by iOS support. Yeah Apple will revisit mini phones again in 4yrs. Just like the SE OG, screen size increased with SE 2.

Leaked CAD drawing are usually not far off the mark.

We know more about the products in a putative September event than the event next Tuesday. I only wish we had CAD drawings of the next iMac... Renders - I do to give much for them.

What will the extra mm in thickness of the camera module (and body)? Better lenses for the larger sensors?
Potentially 7 lens element vs the 6 on current and 11 series.

Dang. Was hoping millimeters "less thin" (sorry, holdover from the Ives era) would yield "no camera bump."
Not at all a deal-breaker. I'd just be ok if placing my phone on a surface, backside-down, wouldn't also feature "the wobble."

I don't get it. Didn't rumors have been saying that there will be no major upgrade to the cameras (on the base models) besides software? Then, why would it need a bigger protrusion?

Hmmm. Kind of a bummer. was hoping my iPhone 12 Pro case would have fit the 13 pro, in case I did decide the upgrades were worth it. I'm thinking this will pretty much seal the 12 pro in my possession until death does us part.

the 13 pro is what I wanted the 12 pro to be, coming from a 6s plus.

Please let that larger camera module indicate higher megapixels... either way I'm sure it's an improvement. Likely it's just larger pixel size and better color reproduction (in low light, with less noise), but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
“Just larger pixel size?” Larger pixel size is way more important than more megapixels.

Because, as you pointed out, they are rumors.

It depends on what you want to shoot. For landscape, in daylight, or if you like to crop in post, more pixels can be better. If you are mostly interested in low light, the larger pixels can be slightly better.

I disagree.
4 years ago was iPhone 7. I have a 6s, which has very similar image quality (in fact, my iPad has an iPhone 7 photo module, and it is not better in daylight, and barely better in low light). I see a significant improvement in IQ with a good, affordable, and actually pocketable compact camera (G7x2), plus way more versatility.
If you can get significantly better results than your phone without hassle with a pocketable device, then your phone is not good enough.

this. Steve is absolutely wobbling around in his grave

Apple supposed to be disappointed 12 mini sales...

Just a suggestion from a friend who bought one and his partner bought a 12 Pro Max: why arent the cameras as good?

If they had made the mini a Pro mini with better camera perhaps sales wouldnt have been so low.
Some people like small phones that dont skimp out.

I'd be trying that next iteration and see if sales improve.

And if they dont, just leave the 12 mini and 13 mini Pro in the lineup for the few who just want a smaller cheaper phone when the 14s come out.
You understand that you can only fit so much into a certain space? Apple can’t defy the laws of physics. The mini already had to have some purpose-built, smaller components, including the Taptic Engine, just for them to squeeze everything in the chassis.

True, but low light on a phone (even an iPhone) is quite different from low light on a DSLR. Noise kicks in very soon on iPhone's RAW files even with relatively abundant light, although it isn't always obvious on Camera app photos due to the strong noise reduction algorithm applied to all photos.

I doubt we're nowhere near the point where more pixels is a better compromise than bigger pixels.

Information and alleged CADs of the upcoming iPhone 13 series, shared in a video from EverythingApplePro, indicates that Apple plans to make this year's iPhone camera module significantly bigger, likely to make way for larger sensors and sensor-shift stabilization.

According to the CADs shared in the video, the iPhone 13 mini, Pro, and Pro Max camera module will all be a "perfect square." Dimensionally, the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera system will protrude 0.87mm more than the current iPhone 12 Pro Max. As a result, the overall body thickness will also increase by .25mm, according to the CADs. The camera module of the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be 3.38 taller and 4.77 wider.

For the iPhone 13 mini, the CAD shows a diagonal camera setup for the 5.4-inch form factor iPhone. The overall iPhone 13 mini body will be 0.26mm thicker.

Moving over to the iPhone 13 Pro, the camera module itself will be 3.41mm taller and 4.81mm wider than the current iPhone 12 Pro. The significantly larger camera housing will include a larger LiDAR sensor, and while not mentioned in today's video, will likely include better accuracy for corners, edges, and AR. Alongside the increase in actual size, the camera system for the 13 Pro will protrude 3.65mm, compared to the 2.79mm of the current high-end iPhone 12 Pro.

The majority of the information shared today by EverythingApplePro was echoed in a previous report this week from 91Mobiles, who failed to provide specific dimensions, but did offer a look at the larger camera setups. The CADs from EverythingApplePro also corroborate previously leaked information regarding the notch. According to the CADs, Apple will move the earpiece to the bezel of the display, making the notch smaller.

I'm convinced they change the dimensions every year, even if they don't have a good reason so that they can also sell you a new $10 case for $50.
