Just two days ahead of Apple unveiling the iPhone 14 lineup, The Wall Street Journal's Tim Higgins reports that the lower-end iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models will be equipped with an "enhanced version" of the A15 Bionic chip.

The report does not provide any additional details about the chip, but there has been speculation that the standard iPhone 14 models will be equipped with the iPhone 13 Pro's higher-end A15 chip with a five-core GPU for up to 25% faster graphics performance. In the standard iPhone 13 models, the A15 chip has a four-core GPU.

Improved graphics performance would likely be the only change to the A15 chip in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, as the chip has the same 6-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine in both the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro.

In line with information shared by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo back in March, the report claims that only the iPhone 14 Pro models will be upgraded with Apple's latest A16 chip for faster CPU performance. This would mark the first time that Apple limits its latest chip to the Pro models as part of an annual refresh of its flagship iPhone lineup, resulting in even more differentiation between the standard and Pro models.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max during a special event at Steve Jobs Theater on Wednesday. Many new features are expected for the Pro models, including an always-on display with a new pill-shaped notch replacement, an upgraded 48-megapixel Wide lens, faster RAM, and more.

With an exchanced chip, This is the iPhone 13S version. I wonder if Apple will allow the launch of these iPhones with the Pro line up or it will it be separate?

It also sounds like this is going from S6 > S7 Apple Watch. Just under the hood refinement a little.
The S7 watch to me was a big improvement. Battery life seems to be much better, and fast charging is legit for someone who wears the watch 24/7 except for shower time.

I mean, you don't have to be a genius to conclude that Apple will include an enhanced chip in the lower-end phones this year....

Why else would they be selling the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus otherwise? What would be the differentiating factor between these phones and the iPhone 13/iPhone 13 mini that they replace, if not for a slightly better CPU? Everything else are the same in the iPhone 13/iPhone 13 mini:
  • same notch
  • same battery
  • same front-facing/rear facing cameras
  • same display
  • same RAM
LOL....waste of a headline, IMHO....

Yes sir! I agree but going from S6>S7 was not a big upgrade. It was very incremental.

Uh, no.

Somebody already mentioned they are likely getting more RAM. 6 GB in the iPhone 14, vs. 4 GB in the iPhone 13.

Plus the rumour is there will be no mini this year. There will be a 6.7" Plus, so no, not the same display.

Because of the Plus, there will be a different battery. I betcha the iPhone 14 Plus will have significantly improved battery life over the iPhone 13.

And the rumour is the iPhone 14 is getting a new front facing camera.

To put it another way, this is a HUGE upgrade for the non-Pro series. Biggest in years in fact. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone 14 Plus is the number one top seller in Q1 2023. (Not necessarily Q4 2022 though, because the Pro series may have a 1 month head start.)

And the iPhone 13 was a 12s. They should just have new phones every 2 years.

No, that would suck for this product category IMO.

Anyhow, nothing is forcing you to buy every year, nor even every couple of years for that matter. However, it's good to have a brand new model available when you do decide to buy. I for one am very, very pleased with the introduction of the iPhone 14 Plus. That is on our purchase list this October.

I don't see why phones have to be released every 12 months at this point. They're pretty mature now and the differences year to year are often small. A longer life cycle would be doable, similar to Macs and the iPad Pro.

I wonder if the live audience will gasp or boo or laugh or nothing

I miss those about live events

Also A15 Pro 🙃

I thought we pretty much knew this already. It's just going to be the "enhanced" A15 from the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.
