So it seems like the best bargain will be to buy old stock of last year’s 13 Pro. Not sure how they’ll sell it to the public that it’s the same phone but has “more cores”, when the 13 pro will be the same hardware, but with an extra camera, for about the same price…

No, that would suck for this product category IMO.

Anyhow, nothing is forcing you to buy every year, nor even every couple of years for that matter. However, it's good to have a brand new model available when you do decide to buy. I for one am very, very pleased with the introduction of the iPhone 14 Plus. That is on our purchase list this October.
I upgrade every 2 years, typically. It’s great - I get 2 iPhones worth of features. Excited for the 13 pro improvements carried over to the 14 pro. Mostly the promotion screen.

I suspect the iPhone 14 will cost the same as the iPhone 13, but of course the bigger iPhone 14 Plus will cost more.

The problem in your situation though is that some rumours say the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus may not be released until later - October.
I was hoping to get the 14 Pro Max (or whatever the equivalent this year is called).

If it is delayed, I might see about finding a 13 Pro Max on discount somewhere. I assume if the 14 isn’t substantially improved over the 13, Apple won’t still sell the 13 after it gets released so it doesn’t cannibalize 14 sales.

Why 6 GB? why no 8 GB jump? As usual, Apple is being stingy miser when it comes to RAM. If possible Apple could have given 1 MB extra in 14 models and called it optimization.

8 GB makes huge difference on iPad Pro 2021 line. iOS is now a memory hog. Hell even most apps are memory hogs these days.

The way Apple divides the features and product line is a bit different from how often they release phones. The iPhone 14 Plus sounds similar to the iPhone 13 Pro Max without ProMotion, they likely could've made it happen sooner if they really wanted to.

Either way if there's something really worth an upgrade then there would be nothing stopping them, yearly cycle or not. Apple released the iPad 3 and 4 only about 6 months apart likely because of how underpowered the 3 was.
I had that ipad3, it was a snail. So many were shocked that it got discontinued 8 months later. #oops

Old news,..this was the first of the iPhone facts to have leaked. Is there anything new in this article?

With an exchanced chip, This is the iPhone 13S version. I wonder if Apple will allow the launch of these iPhones with the Pro line up or it will it be separate?

It also sounds like this is going from S6 > S7 Apple Watch. Just under the hood refinement a little.
Agreed. My guess is this was the compromise made to advert a crisis due to the chip shortage: Save the new chips for the Pro devices and offer a modest retool for the rest.

It's in line with Apple's business model, and how it differs from Android.

Apple, having control over hardware and software, is able to optimise their OS to run as smoothly as possible on their processors. This allows them to get away with including less specs (ie: ram and storage) while still maintain a comparable or even superior performance to Android. Because of the scale at which Apple operates, this typically translates to significant savings when you consider how much less they end up spending on ram and flash, as well as the ability to standardise the use of components across their various product lines.

Android has no such control, and can only "brute-force" their way to better performance by either overclocking their processors (often at the expense of poorer battery life) or tacking on more ram (translating to higher costs). Throw in their inability to monetise their user base after the initial hardware sale, and it's little surprise why Apple is able to offer longer software support, and why Apple has the lion's share of profits in the market.

Less than 2 days to go and no leaked benchmarks for the A16.

Is that because Apple has tightened up on leaks, or maybe because the A16 Pro versions are going to released shortly after the regular 14?

" iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models will be equipped with an "enhanced version" of the A15 Bionic chip."
compared to the iphone 13, and the same version of the A15 compared to the 13 pro models

The smallest update from one generation to another ever is this 13-> 14

The hype surrounding each phone, each year, is always soooooo overblown. Like the grown men that salivate for the next release of a SideShow collectible “figure” their children will be burdened with when they pass, getting excited for a phone that accomplishes the same tasks as the phone that came the year before only feeds in to manufactured idea that it’s best for everyone to keep upgrading. It’s silly.

if you are looking at performance it depends whats underneath ...apple can achieve great performance from 2 things the A16 and the other one from vapour chamber (rumoured ) , so under load this can be a big leap. Also a great jump if you care about camera

Live event = something unexpected I think (and hope)! Nothing seems very exciting yet -
iPhone events have become very predictable and because of their hype status in the industry, most, if not all, of its features are leaked before hand because so many people are invested in it....

Rarely, if ever, iPhone events now show off features that are unexpected....

Eh so in short these only exist to keep the high(er) price points of the Pro models. They could have just continued to sell the iPhone 13 with a price drop but then the gap between last years model and the Pro price range would have been too high. They r obviously not gonna make the Pro cheaper. In fact, the real courage will be further increasing the price of the regular iPhone 14 (compared to the 13) in Euro.

We will know tomorrow

This won’t affect anybody buying the phone as it’ll still be fast and efficient enough to handle everything needed from the phone. I don’t know why people on here are making such a big deal out of it? Like anybody will be able to see a visible performance difference between an A15 and A16 lol.

I find it hard to believe Apple can do all that much performance wise on the A16 - it uses the same process node (or a slight variation thereof) and operates within the same power constraints. It’s not that it can’t improve at all, but for it to improve a lot would also imply that their second gen 5nm product left a lot of enhancements on the table. I can’t see that, honestly.
One thing that the A15 did disappoint with, was that it failed to adopt LPDDR5. Using that should provide a good boost (although invisible in Geekbench since it avoids going to main memory), for graphics in particular. How much of a positive that is depends on user habits.

If Apple can improve thermal dissipation (maybe consider not covering the phone in glass?) it would help sustained performance rather than bursty loads - again we are then pretty much talking 3D-gaming. The possibly more likely alternative being that Apple takes a leaf out of Intels Skylake book and uses improved heat dissipation to simply crank power consumption up for bursty loads as well, leading to higher peak performance - at a cost.

yeah wishful thinking.. I just remember a few years back I was surprised of the mini in that magic steel case ha! I just WISH they could have made the PM out of a light weight material! its going to be way too heavy... which will put a lot of people into the pro category..
