I don't see why phones have to be released every 12 months at this point. They're pretty mature now and the differences year to year are often small. A longer life cycle would be doable, similar to Macs and the iPad Pro.
As I said earlier, the iPhone 14 non-Pro series is a HUGE upgrade over the iPhone 13 non-Pro series.

I would hate to be buying an iPhone 13 non-Pro in 2022.

The way Apple divides the features and product line is a bit different from how often they release phones. The iPhone 14 Plus sounds similar to the iPhone 13 Pro Max without ProMotion, they likely could've made it happen sooner if they really wanted to.

Either way if there's something really worth an upgrade then there would be nothing stopping them, yearly cycle or not. Apple released the iPad 3 and 4 only about 6 months apart likely because of how underpowered the 3 was.

But 6GB RAM was also rumored for all models which implied the A15 from the 13 Pros would be in the standard models.
I don't see why one would imply the other. In fact, I suspect the iPhone 13 and iPhone Pro actually have the exact same memory interface, with both using LPDDR4X.

Remember, the only difference between the A15 in the Pros and the A15 in the non-Pros is the number of GPU cores, except AFAIK they're actually the exact same silicon. The non-Pros just have a deactivated GPU core.

Too bad. I’ve said it before but I do think one of the great things about the iPhone was always getting the best chip technology no matter whether you bought the cheapest model or the most premium.

Then again, iOS being what it is… have any of us really needed more power than anything that came after the iPhone 7 line? Apple really could use something that takes advantage of all the power.

In general I agree with you, but I must admit, my iPhone 7 Plus (A10) and iPad 7th generation (A10) did have slight lag at times. Nothing bad, but I could sometimes notice it. I sold the iPhone 7 Plus but my wife will continue to use the iPad 7th generation for a long time.

OTOH. my iPhone 12 Pro Max (A14) is lightning fast. My wife's iPhone XR (A12) is pretty decent too, but we will be replacing that with an iPhone 14 Plus anyway.

Fair enough, I guess I see the full-power GPU and 6GB RAM as a pair. There's no reason to disable that core when yields are most likely up and the A16 exists for differentiation.

Yeah, that's how I see it. The iPhone non-Pro series is due for a RAM upgrade so 6 GB makes sense, and A15 yields must be great now so no need to disable the one GPU core.

Anyhow, it seems we both agree (like the article) that the so-called "enhanced A15" is just the same A15 the 13 Pros have been using all along.

It's a bit sad and pathetic Apple has to resort to this. No one will ever notice 4 vs 5 GPUs in their mobile phone. But makes for a feel good story how your iPhone 14 is better than your bros iPhone 13...
I suspect they won't even emphasize this. Mention it sure, but it won't be a major bragging point. They're much more likely going to talk more about the screen and the new front camera, for example.

Every time I see the headline of this article I read it as “iPhone 14 to feature Enhanced Vision” and then I have to look again 😝

I’m needing to buy a new phone at launch since my 7+ stopped working last week. I’m gonna be so disappointed if it’s just some barely bumped A15, especially if they jack up the price again.

eventually the non-pro model will just be last year's pro.

They only reason the non-pro models exist is to justify the higher price tags of the Pro line, and to prevent the cannibalization the previous year's pro model would generate.

I suspect the iPhone 14 will cost the same as the iPhone 13, but of course the bigger iPhone 14 Plus will cost more.

The problem in your situation though is that some rumours say the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus may not be released until later - October.

I know many aren’t going to believe my story, but some months ago, when I was trying to adapt to the 13 mini, I tested several iPhones. One of the minis had, in Geekbench, the same metal score as the 13 pro. So my guess is that the regular A15 was a binned version of the A15 with 5 GPU cores, and I got one that didn’t have the fifth GPU core disabled. This unit was manufactured in may or so, unlike the one that I tried in Christmas that had, effectively, just 4 GPU cores enabled (lower metal score in Geekbench 5).

I’m not sure if I still have the screenshot with the GB metal result but it was on the 13 pro league. Only 4GB of RAM unfortunately.

I ended up returning it because the screen was very uncomfortable to my eyes.

TL;DR: yeah, I tested several iPhone 13 minis, and the last one I tried had a 5 core GPU.
