Did you even read the article? The even more premium-priced tech a.k.a. iPhone 14 Pro series is selling like crazy!
It's the standard 14 series that are seeing lackluster sales.
If you read the article more carefully you’d know that the projections are that apple will sell 10 million iPhone LESS in total. Maybe the pro is selling better than they thought, but they’re still selling overall a lot less iPhones. The iPhone 14 flop is only partly offset by better pro sales, overall they are still selling less. Apple is being taught a lesson from its customers: arrogance doesn’t pay.

As a collective, I feel most people now have better things to worry about than owning the latest black mirror. And if they don’t then they soon will have. Subscription based iPhone renting coming in 2023.

If the Pro models get all the features, then people will either eat the price difference and go for a Pro, save money and go for last years, or even wait 'till next year

Let's be honest, these two devices only exist to justify / keep the high price of the Pro. From a marketing point of view it would simply look bad to sell the iPhone 13 with a discount (since its a year old) and then have a huge jump of X bucks to the Pro.

Also, if u already cannot afford an iPhone and have to do monthly payments (which Apple is pushing for), you might as well pay 10 euro more to get a Pro instead.

There are also those people, who feel like they need to stand out by showing of their "cool new iPhone" and to get that you need to be able to show off the "dynamic island". How else would you get the "LOOK AT ME I HAVE THE LATEST IPHONE ... can I try the dynamic island? SURE IT IS SUPER COOL" feeling

Yeah, but with a remarkable higher average selling price (ASP per sold unit) due to higher-than-expected demand for the Pro-series.

I don't think this should come as a surprise. They replaced the Mini with the Plus. Mini was $699 and plus is $899. That $200 increase and the recycled A15 means you can get the in between size regular 13 for $699. I would love to see the sales numbers for the regular 13 since the price drop.

1) In the UK - where I am - it's pretty common to get your phone as part of a monthly fee along with your call/data package.

I know when I've looked at my options, getting the Pro Max (for 36 months) is only about £4-5 more than the Plus (depends if you have a phone to recycle with them plus if you're upgrading etc. etc.).

So for many people, I suspect that if they want a big iPhone, they're willing to pay a little bit more a month for the best one.

2) I think though that the regular iPhone - no matter its size - is settling down to be more for incremental upgraders ('I broke my phone!', 'Ah, it's just getting too slow now!') so we'll likely see healthy figures throughout the year for these models when people just want a new 'regular' iPhone (which they'll keep for 4-5 years).

The 'wow' factor that we used to have for the regular iPhone early in its life, where people rush to upgrade, I think is now reserved only for the Pro phones.

At least here in the U.S. the big providers are offering the 14 Pro series (including the big one) for "free" (of course you pay for it in the monthly payments) - and a whole lotta people just get phones this way here, so can see the Plus sales being low (besides the 13 Pro hardware in it, although most folks don't know or care about that). Adding inflation, talk of recession going on and the uninspiring colors.

Guessing sales will go up after a few months.

Yes I read it. They definitely aren't selling crazy here. I've yet to see one except on the internet.
But that aside, the 14 Plus is always destined to suffer from middle child syndrome in a saturated mature market where sky-high inflation makes you question your life choices. Best sellers are gonna be either the cheapest or the best, and the middle-child is going to be forgotten. I'm on a salary that is a fraction of Apple's executives, I'm not even a sales exec, and I could have told them that.

Like I said: out of touch with reality if they expected anything different.

Haha, meanwhile the iPhone 13 mini is going UP in value. Amazon U.K. keep toggling between £679 and £649 (RRP) pricing and the midnight, blue and green options keep selling out. Apple should release a 15 mini, as according to this article the Mini sells better.

Apple is selling 8 different phones on their website. The "brilliance" of Steve Jobs return was to simplify the product line. IMO, still selling a iPhone 12 makes little sense.
Further, even though the price gap the iPhone 14PM is 22% more expensive than the iPhone 14+, the $200 price gap does not seem that big considering the feature differences (camera, screen)

Perhaps Apple will take away form this years product launches a lesson.

Dont put the same processor etc etc in the next phone....

If you dont have enough upgrades to justify the next numbered phone up... i.e 13 to 14... then dont release one at all.

Seems to me that the 14 customers would be niche in that 13 owners wouldnt be upgrading to 14. 12 owners on a 2 year cycle would be better off getting the 13 and saving some money....
So who wants the 14 plus? I can only see it being 'non pro' customers who wanted the bigger screen but never wanted to pay pro prices.

I can guarantee that the vast majority of consumers out there do not care one iota that this phone has an A15 in it nor care. It’s about price and right now a significant part of the market are not upgrading this year due to the cost of living crisis.

I'm a bit surprised the 14 Plus isn't selling better.

The 6S Plus, 7 Plus, and 8 Plus did very well. It seems lots of people like big iPhones, and I'd guess that many of them just want a big phone but aren't willing to pay $1100 or more for pro-level features that aren't important to them.

But I'm no smartphone market analyst, no surprise I'm wrong here.
