It reminds me of the “is coffee good for you or not” articles that always come out every few years.

I don’t know, it’s actually quite interesting to see if Apple will increase storage: Will Apple follow their penny pinching trend to make the next storage tier up higher the reasonable one, thus extracting more money from customers?

Or will Apple go the more charitable route and provide to customers what they actually need on a device starting at $1099 (rumored).

I'd be shocked if Apple jumped up to 256 GB one year after moving the default to 128 GB. I don't see it as likely because Apple doesn't move that fast. 8K video is another feature I see as unlikely because 8K TVs and monitors are damn near non-existent.

Maybe to justify the higher starting price. But it's Apple. They're still selling a $700 phone with 64GB storage. Wouldn't surprise me if 128GB will still be the base storage for the 14 Pro.

$50? Thought it was $100...

If SE 3rd Gen saw a 7.5% price increase from 399 to 429, then we should at the very least expect $799 iPhone 14 to jump to $859, 14 Pro to $1074, and 14 Pro Max to $1184 if equal price increases are actually implemented this year.

*Obviously not those exact numbers as Apple probably won't increase pricing on all models and no iPhone is ever getting a price where the rightmost digit isn't a 9, rounding up or down to the nearest ten or more.

I'm thinking:
  • 14 $849 or $899
  • 14 Max $949 or $999
  • 14 Pro $1049 or $1099
  • 14 Pro Max $1149 or $1199
Hopefully all price hike rumors are wrong. But since it happened even on the worst value iPhone to ever drop, SE 3rd Gen., then I don't see why Apple wouldn't hike prices on the rest of the lineup.

I think these satellite rumors make more sense for the watch. An explorer or rugged version of the watch for hiking and being “far out” so you can do e911.. I’d imagine more of a garmin competitor. Surprised that no rumors have circulated of satellite connectivity for the watch because I think it’s geared more towards that then the phones.

With the advent of 5G I’m surprised they don’t offer an iPhone with unlimited storage space where it offloads used data onto the cloud.

Yes, but that was over a two year period. The $429 third generation SE was released two years after the $399 second generation SE.

Also, the starting retail price of the iPhone 13 is actually $829. The $799 price is with a $30 AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon connectivity discount.

This would be surprising. Apple is obsessed with their services revenue lately and lower storage means more paid iCloud subscriptions. I'll be impressed if they do this.

If they look to increase the base price, they better upgrade the base storage as well. They already had a higher margin on the 256GB anyways, so it's going to compensate for the inflation, which by the way seems to be going down since the last few days/weeks.

Considering it was criminal that only 13 Pro starting at 256 GB could shoot ProRes at 4k30, I’d welcome this decision.

Yeah give me this and 30W magsafe and I ain’t waiting for USB-C. I need to upgrade now from my 2017 Android phone like yesterday…

I have 256 GB in my iPhone X and I have only so far used about 116 GBs. It’s hard fill up and I’ve had this phone for nearly 5 years. It’s not for a lack of trying either.
Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. I have 230GB left on my 512GB 13 and who knows...tomorrow I may decide to start shooting and editing videos and need that extra space. (It's better to have too much than not enough.)

iPhone Pro models offering features like ProRes video recording in 4K shouldn't come w/ less than 256GB.

iPhones models by starting storage:

4GB: original (1 model year)
8GB: 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S (4 model years)
16GB: 5/5c, 5S, 6/6+, 6S/6S+, SE (1st gen) (4 model years)
32GB: 7/7+ (1 model year)
64GB: 8/8+, X, XR, XS/XS Max, 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max, SE (2nd Gen), 12/12mini, SE (3rd Gen) (~4 model years)
128GB: 12 Pro/Max, 13/13mini/13Pro/13ProMax (2 model years)

Note: The SE 3rd Gen could arguably consist as another model year for 64GB, but as an SE model, I'm not counting it if that was the only thing that was announced.

We haven't really been on 128GB that long when considering how long we had 8GB, 16GB, and 64GB configurations as the base.

I plan to increase my storage from 256GB to 512GB just to be on the safe side with enough storage.

Apple played around with storage sizes a bit in the early years. In the U.S., I believe the 3GS launched with a starting storage of 16GB while the 3G continued at 8GB. The 8GB 3GS eventually replaced the 8GB 3G but only after the 4 came out.

The same would be true with models like the 4 and 4s. The 4 launched with a starting storage size of 16GB and an 8GB version wasn't available until the 4s came out. The 4s launched with a starting storage of 16GB and an 8GB version wasn't available until nearly two years later when the 5c and 5s came out.

I would consider that a niche crowd, its not necessarily representative of all iPhone users. I see granny's walking around iPhone 13 Pro Maxes in Sierra Blue, clear case. They probably have the maxed out config, but I wouldn't be surprised if they barely scratched the surface of using it to what is its full potential.
