I guess the 2021 MacBook Pro models are just prototypes and by 2022 or sometime later they will have FaceID functionality as part of the notch...

Although that might be more aesthetically pleasing and distinct than a punch hole, the reason Apple is moving to punch hole is really to maximize screen real estate and entirely skip the stop gaps I believe. Just doing the smallest possible disturbance on the display and moving on.

Finally its about time that damn notch is gone. Centred punch hole is fine, but would better if shoved to the far top right of the screen like the Galaxy S10. Looks like the smallest Iphone 14 Pro will be my next phone, as there most likely will not be a 14 Mini. Apple should meet us in the middle and make the 14 Pro a 5.8 screen, but alas that probably wont happen.
This only makes sense if Face ID is gone or the components are shrunk significantly. No point having a large pill-shaped hole punch over a notch. The display above the hole punch wouldn’t be useful anyway.
InB4 there’s a minor difference with the displays and everyone is asking “my iPhone 14 Pro Max has a [insert brand here] display will Apple let me swap for the [insert other brand here].”

I've stopped believing in these rumors especially after iPhone 13 Pro key note. Kuo can F OFF.

What a strange attitude to have, telling one of the most notarized Apple insiders to ‘F off’ on discussion forum?
I would trust Ming Kuo way than I would any other insider, being that he clearly has direct knowledge of Apples manufacturing, and has proven that over the years many times with the iPhone X and other models.
Unless you can provide a source that’s more reliable than he is, then I’m sure he’s relevant enough for Macrumors to report what he has to say versus what one member says telling someone to “F off”.
It won't happen, they would have already reverse engineered every other display on the market with under display tech. They also have Patents on under display.
You do realise how much he also get wrong,..right? Yes he is on a whole other level than Prosser, but yes, he gets a lot wrong too.
If I was to have a choice of the two, it would be FaceID. I've used both methods and I personally find FaceID far better in almost every way, far faster and easier, I don't need to think about it at all. The face mask issue is mitigated with the Apple Watch, but I appreciate not everyone has one.
TouchID as a "backup" or alternative authentication would be nice, but I doubt Apple would go backwards in tech and security - don't forget FaceID has a 20x advantage over TouchID when it comes to spoofing.
Prosser is a lucky guesser. At least Kuo actually has a pretty good track record through proper analysis and "insiders".
Inferior to Face ID by miles.

As someone who loves their iPhone 12 mini, I'm kind of sad to see the mini lineup discontinued.

I suspect Touch ID is making a come back in the power button like the iPad Air. They had to milk users a bit first before they say this was a major engineering endeavor.

I would agree except move that cut out area up to the frame so there is no dead space between the pill shaped area and the frame. Voila
They are preparing the 3rd gen Face-ID components that will fit the WIDER notch in the Macbook Pro's in 2023. They could have gone notchless on this new MBP, but the **** they will get in 2023 when introducing a notch made them introduce it now (even if it's unnecessary to prepare the people). This Macbook was already in prototype at the same time during the iPhone XS era.
I'm so GLAD that I didn't buy the iPhone 13 Pro. I would be really bummed out about now!
Isn't that basically a notch, with a teeny-tiny strip of not-really-usable screen above it, that just makes the notch extend farther into the screen than it would if it were adjacent to the top?
