Let me open by stating that while not the notch hater that can be quite vocal in this community, I would be interested in Apple’s next solution for their front-facing cameras on future iPhones.

That said, two things.
1) It would strike me as odd, maybe unfortunate (which I’ll touch on in a sec), if Apple were to debut a whole punch concept on iPhone 14 a mere year after notching their long-anticipated flagship laptop. That they notch’d MBP seems to suggest they’re more all in on the notch design language than I anticipated. Had they dropped their MBP redesign with the standard single-cam-hole-in-the-bezel, I’d be a little more inclined to believe these hole punch rumors. But they didn't, which makes me think “ok, notch is here for a bit. Cool.” Plus, something about a hole punch solution just doesn’t feel like iPhone’s next evolution to me - which can only mean it surely is. ;)

2) If iPhone did get a hole punch treatment, it would immediately set the expectation that another MBP update was looming - which would be unfortunate, leaving one of those weird moments where you end up with that odd one-off cycle where one iteration of a product line has this weird aspect that is gone within a year. Even worse… Can you imagine these forums if they release a hole punch MBP next year? I think they’d implode. Arn may have to pull the plug. The chorus of notch’d MBPs users claiming their 1-yr old machines were now obsolete and they were done with Apple forever and moving to an Acer would make these forums almost unreadable. Almost. For those that find some twisted entertainment value in tech nerds’ anger-fueled blatherings, it would be gold.

Should a hole punch iPhone be announced next year, I’ll immediately start popping corn.

The MBP notch is this generation's Touch Bar. One of those features people buying a used model in years to come will largely ignore and wish wasn't there.

Instead of a hole punch, I wish Apple was introducing the following camera layout instead. It looks much simpler and elegant. This hole punch is throwing mad Samsung vibes.

Oh well, hole punch will do it. Don't have a choice.

Think Different! 🤫🍎
Samsung already had a pill-shaped cut-out. Look at the S10 Plus.

Apple is just shamelessly ripping-off Samsung.

Is it just me or do others despise the hole punch look? It looks so lame, like a defect in the screen, plus it screams plain old Android phone. So can we expect many more versions of the iPhone with a hole in the display - yuk? If Apple can implement the camera through a tiny hole punch then why did they put a large notch on the new Macbook Pro's? Something does add up here and I really really hope they don't go with the hole punch design since the notch is so much better and now it's legendary Apple branding.

Um, eliminate the bezels on both sides and bottom, then a thin one at the top that has the camera and other sensors. It’s not hard to get rid of the notch.

For me, the hole punch is good only if FaceID remains.
I agree. I think Apple will go with the pill-shaped punch like on the S10 plus.

Your post is more proof that Apple fanatics only care about brand, not about elegant design or functionality.
There is a good reason why all Android manufacturers jumped from notch to hole punch. The hole punch display is a far more elegant and less distracting design than the notch. Props to Samsung for pioneering this design and shame on Apple for being a shameless rip-off copycat.

It doesn’t work like that. Face ID existed long before the pandemic, and Apple did mitigate ways around to unlock your phone with using a mask. It seems you mistakenly forgot to even mention that in your post.

Furthermore, you don’t have to use Face ID, you can still unlock your phone with a passcode if that was something that was that much of an issue for the user. That’s also something you failed to mention.
So true. When I'm wearing a mask, it takes me about a second to type in my six-digit passcode, so it's no big deal. The rest of the time, Face ID works much better for me than Touch ID. I just hold my iPhone or iPad in front of my face, and it unlocks. Touch ID, on the other hand, doesn't work if my thumb is even slightly damp from water or perspiration, or if it's chapped from winter weather or manual labor (e.g., yard work or home-improvement projects). Then I have to type in my passcode, anyway.

Limited edition notch...

It will look like an android device with the round hole and it will still be a distraction.

Samsung did that on their S10+ and Ultra from 2019. They switched to a single hole punch starting with the Note 10 later the same year.

While I think this looks better than the notch, it actually creates more unusable screen space. Also the notch is Apple's identity now, they won't be getting rid of it for a while.

I can’t wait until around keynote time next year where everyone that’s complaining about the hole punch, will come here to post about how they preordered that same phone.
Just like how everyone hated the notch at first, people will get over it and it will break preorder records like it does pretty much every year.

With no notch, Apple will a implement a different solution for Face ID

The best solution to Face ID is Touch ID.
Absolutely. Especially when wearing a mask or face covering is such a big part of everyday life now. FaceID is all but useless in public.
