Yeah, overheating from the sun usually ruins any brightness gains the screen gets. I'm hoping the A16 is more efficient to hopefully have more headroom before overheating from sunlight (Given it didn't get much in the way of performance gains.)

Buying white or gold phones also help.

The question is for how long. Even today it stays bright for 2 minutes and then dims all the way down because it's too hot. I can't imagine that at 2000 nits it's going to do much better.
Well said. My 13 Pro gets too hot with just general use indoors!

Have you ever been outside and found yourself unable to use your iPhone because it's too dim in the glaring sun? For those upgrading to Apple's latest high-end models, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are able to get significantly brighter when used outdoors in sunlight, thanks to more advanced displays.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature Super Retina XDR displays that Apple calls the "most advanced displays in any smartphone." The new displays have a peak brightness of 2,000 nits when used outdoors in sunlight, two times the peak brightness of previous models.

When viewing HDR photos, videos, and movies, the new displays can reach a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, higher than older iPhones. With 1,600 nits of brightness, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max now deliver the same level of brightness as the high-end $4,999 Pro Display XDR when watching HDR content, according to Apple.

Apple is able to deliver these higher brightnesses thanks to a more advanced OLED panel and a new Display Engine in the A16 Bionic chip that powers features like Dynamic Island, always-on, and the 120Hz variable refresh rate.

There are also smaller changes in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max displays compared to their respective predecessors. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 2,796 by 1,290 resolution compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max at 2,778 by 1,284. The iPhone 14 Pro also gets a small bump in resolution at 2,556 by 1,179 compared to 2,532 by 1,170 for the iPhone 13 Pro.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, alongside the lower-end iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, were made available for pre-order earlier today and will begin arriving to customers on Friday, September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus will begin shipping on Friday, October 7.

Very good. I notice my iPhone 13 is pathetic to view in bright sunlight and one of many reasons I use a separate Canon.
 
That sounds awesome. I use my iPhone 13 Pro Max outside a lot. I actually bought a phone cooler off Amazon, it is a couple fans that attach to the back of the phone. I find just keeping the phone cool does a lot to make the display more readable since a lot of the problem is the device dimming itself when it overheats.
Yeah I find in the summer my iPhone 12 screen gets dimmer quicker because of heat.
 
That's going to be useful.
I remember going out a lot of times this summer and I couldn't see anything on my iPhone 12 at max brightness.

This is definitely something I'd adore. Quite many times when we go out with our kids and taking pictures get kinda hard because the screen is not very visible. The slight increase on the pixel count is probably due to the thinner bezel while maintaining the physical dimensions. I applaud both improvements and can't wait to get my hands on the 14. I've been using the iPhoneX for quite some time now.
 
this is actually really good news. at times my iphone is literally unusable because i can't see the screen properly.

hopefully the iPhone 15 is even brighter cause i'm not buying the 14. no USB C then forget it.
 
Love it. I do a lot of product video work for my clients outdoors, and sometimes it tough to see the display. This should help!
 
It will be pointless because the phone will dim because of heat. Hot summer sunny days in Santorini made my iPhone 13 Pro’s screen so dim while taking photos. And GPS made the phone warm so screen dimming again.

Please... let Apple and TC know about this before it's too late, as it likely never crossed their mind! Stat!
 
I wish people would learn to use words... 50% brighter is not half as bright - "brighter" adds to 100%, so "50% brighter" is "150% as bright." 2x brighter means the same thing as 200% brighter - which would be 3x as bright. The title says 2x brighter, but the text says "two times the peak brightness of previous models." That is 100% brighter (1x brighter).

This marketing mis-speak (or falsifying?) is almost as bad as those that list more than 100% lower or more than 100% cheaper... 100% less than any starting value is zero (zilch, zip, nada). You can't have more than 100% reduction of anything. You can't have more than 1x less of something. 1x less is the same as 100% reduction. So if you hear somebody tout 300% less (whatever) or 5x less (whatever), just laugh. Subtracting 300% or 3x is not the same as dividing by three (which is probably what was meant). Twice the savings is not 200% less of anything. One third as likely is not the same as 3x less likely (which means 300% less likely), it's only 66% less likely (or .66x less likely).

Wait so is the “overheating” thing the reason why my past iPhones will suddenly dim while still insisting in control center that the brightness is turned all the way up?

For years I’ve thought this was a software bug or that I was crazy since the dimming is so abrupt with no gradual fade and no messaging such as, “iPhone needs to cool down for full brightness.”

Yes. It's gotten so aggressive in the latest phones and is my biggest gripe with nearly every phone since the X. My 13PM becomes useless after taking just a few photos in sunlight, and I do a lot of capturing out on hikes and Jeep overlanding trips. The max brightness "steps" down abruptly even if the user has commanded full brightness on the control center setting. Blast your car's AC at the bottom inner corner of the camera bump and you'll see the brightness come right back in 10-15 seconds.

I'm hoping because they talked a lot about the display being all-new plus the 4nm SoC and gained efficiencies that they've improved this behavior. It honestly appears to me as far too conservative and aggressive with how much it limits brightness in the sun.

Hmm.. my phone doesnt do that. It stays all the way up, even playing games.
 
I didn’t realise so many people couldn’t see their screens. Honestly my phones been very legible in the sun for like 3 years at least. I think the old dim screen tech is over with for a while.. but give the people what they want. Apparently, that’s 2000nits.

Ya can't imagine the combo of the two being good for battery life either.
