Hopefully the rumors about a new titanium chassis for the Pro models will turn out to be true. Otherwise these will simply be too heavy.
Yeah, but I’m afraid that titanium will come for later models, iPhone 15 the earliest.

I don’t see Apple keeping the exact same design for the iPhone 14 pro and, at the same time, using titanium.

We will know soon enough, but I guess if there is a larger battery, then there is no room for the rumoured vapour chamber.

Yeah but at this point what’s another few grams? Sigh. It is what it is.

My S22 Ultra (and previous Samsungs) do lose about 1% per hour to AOD (I assume it’s to AOD because nothing else is going on). And I haven’t been getting stellar battery life out of it to start with, because of how things are with my cellular service out here. And then if I happen to drive into a good 5G zone…whoosh goes the battery.

With pained aging hands, I welcome the brick.
i think its the carriers, i notice when i got airplane mode on plus wifi and aod battery is fine, if i have ap mode off, wifi off and even data off it still eats the battery.

This thing is gonna be heavy. More camera rigging, more battery, all that stainless steel and glass. I’m pretty sure I’d give up wireless charging to go back to all Aluminum enclosures.

A bigger and better battery is always welcome. I also want them to increase the charging speed, Apple’s fast charging is one of the slowest ones on the market.

I’ll be happy to get more battery life and extend it further by turning off the AOD. There isn’t much else I really care about, though I would love to see a titanium case material be offered. I wouldn’t even think about upgrading if it weren’t for one of kids needing a new phon. He will get my 12 Pro Max and I may get a 14 Pro, if battery life is similar to what I’ve been getting with my 12 PM.

I have to agree. I feel like the Pro Max is already too heavy. I’d even take cheaper material to loose some weight on those things. However, bigger battery itself is always welcome
Given the rumours on physical dimensions for this year's phones I suspect any battery size increase is going to be a fairly token one, maybe 5% increase or at maximum 10%, and the battery doesn't account for 100% of the weight. If we knew what percentage of the total weight the current battery accounts for we could estimate the weight gain on say a Pro Max. Assuming that maybe the battery is 50% of the total weight (a wild guess) and it is a 5% capacity increase then assuming the same battery technology (energy stored per gram doesn't is the same as last year) that would mean that the current 240g iPhone 13 Max has a 120g battery so an extra 5% capacity would add 6g to the weight up to maybe 12g if it's a 10% increase.

I'm obsessed with battery life so personally I would take that weight hit in return for extra battery life but I realise others might have different views and even battery-life-obsessed me can see that the trend of ever increasing weight can't continue indefinitely and ideally should be reversed (without sacrificing battery life). I also agree with you 100% on your other point. I too would be willing to see cheaper materials if that is what is needed to reverse that trend. I remember when I had an iPhone 4 I went into an Apple Store to look at an iPhone 5. It was perhaps the biggest "oh wow" moment I have ever had with an iPhone when I picked up that iPhone 5, with its bigger screen, and was genuinely shocked at how much lighter it felt in my hand compared to my iPhone 4. The reason I think is because the 5 had an aluminium back whereas my 4 had a glass back. I know that a metal back, or at least a full one, is no longer an option due to wireless charging but I do keep wondering whether Apple could reduce weight and still keep a high-end aesthetic by some sort of nicely finished carbon fibre (can you charge through CF? can CF be given a brushed finish?) or some other option. I'm sure Apple has some world class materials scientists on its payroll and some real innovation in this area would be nice to see.

I'm also one of those people who will turn off AOD to get more battery life. If all of these rumours pan out then, even though I currently have a 13 Pro Max, I am really excited about the 14 Pro Max. With rumours of 30% more efficient LPDDR5 memory, presumably a more power efficient A16 SoC, the more efficient X65 modem, a screen that can go down to 1Hz that I hope apps like ebook and news readers can make use of when displaying static content, and a bigger battery on top of all that I can see that for people like me who have 5G off and disable AOD we really might be looking at a 20+% increase in battery life vs the 13 Pro Max. If this is as good as I hope then yet this year's iPhone will be a must have upgrade for me and I'll be sitting anxiously in front of my PC as the clock ticks down to the web store opening up for iPhone 14 Pro Max orders.

Can’t wait for an always on display on an iPhone, that’s always something I miss when I switch from Android.

I'm sure it can be switched off- Apple isn't that stupid.
Yes I would hope they have an on/off and then a setting to be off during sleep or some custom time range. And hopefully it also uses the sensors so AOD isn't on inside your pocket/bag etc...

Yeah, the same design is probably fundamentally why they (had to) kept the same materials for the 14 Pro as well. I'm looking forward to a more substantial design overhaul with the 15 Pro, that will allow them to switch to a new material as well.
Folks, with the Apple Watch Ultra, now we know what Apple will use that titanium for— an iPhone 15 Ultra. That may be why they chose the “Ultra” name for the watch, to open up a new tier of titanium based products.

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well. Seems like there'll be some new Ultra products in Apple's other product lineups. That said though, would an "iPhone 15 Ultra" have the focus on the same features as the Apple Watch Ultra (mainly durability features like a more rugged casing and waterproofing)? In that case I hope they lean more towards making a phone even more suitable for filmmakers and people who are looking for higher performance on their handheld device, like maybe a customizable button that can be used as a camera capture button, a titanium case (again), and a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 5/USB4v2 USB-C port for faster file transfer, and a more sophisticated cooling system inside (like a vapor chamber that was rumored for this year but (probably) didn't turn out to be true (and maybe throw some more RAM in there for the nerds in the higher storage tier options). That would actually be an interesting iphone that I'd consider buying.
If I’m Apple, I love this idea, bringing out a 15 Ultra next year would be perhaps the only way to get people who buy this year’s Pro and Pro Max to upgrade so quickly. That said, my wallet hates this idea, and thinks Apple is absolutely diabolical for thinking it… 😝

I don't know if it would be possible but as well as a titanium case I wonder whether some of the inevitable price premium vs the Pro models could go towards some sort of fancy materials technology for the back to replace the glass currently used on other iPhones - something that still looks stylish i.e. not obviously cheap-looking plastic, that doesn't block RF charging, and that is a lot lighter and thinner than the current glass backs. If possible then reduced thickness could give more internal space for a bigger battery without increasing overall size beyond what we have now, possibly some further weight reduction (look at iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4 to see what can be gained by moving away from a glass back), and it would probably also play into the more rugged casing theme that you suggest.
