I have noticed a trend that people who demand oddball iPhones just want a cheap iPhone that works for their basic needs. Which means they are an unprofitable market segment.
You misunderstand. My point is to use latest tech to make phone power efficient instead of ever pushing more processing power to keep battery life status quo.

You seem to do it well with Silicon Mac-Daddy Srouji and did for over 20yrs with Jony Ive (before he got bored), yet you get rid of talent like Forstall for a silly public apology and appease whiners. makes me wonder if Jony Ive being 'bored' was really the reason he left. Is the arc that Tim created and steers somewhat toxic to key talent that wants to push Apple further and harder too aggressive?

I assume we are talking about real time ray tracing or hardware accelerated ray tracing because ray tracing already exists on A series chips with Metal.

It exists, but it isn't very fast in comparison to AMD/Nvidia cards on PCs, which is a problem for 3D/CAD apps and gaming.

Do we really need Raytracing on a phone? I don’t even have it on my desktop. (I definitely want it, just haven’t plunked down the funds to buy a card that can do it.)

I’d prefer to see this tech be on a MacBook Pro before I see it on the phone. Heck, I’d expect it on an iPad Pro before an iPhone. Just seems like the screen size is so small, is raytracing that big of a deal?

Maybe this is like the space race.
I may be wrong, but doesn't the core design of these chips originate on the phone, and then get built up into the powerhouse versions in the M-series on laptops and desktop? If so, we need to see it here before we'll see it at the desktop, where it is greatly needed.
I guess this sort of indirectly confirms that hardware ray tracing will come to the M2 Pro/ Max or make its debut in the M3. This should help Apple close the gap a little more in their GPU performance compared to Nvidia.
If I understand, probably the M3. That kind of sucks, because it means we need to wait until 2024 to see the desktop versions and judge their performance against AMD/Nvidia (which will have gained a bunch by then). At this point, I kind of wish Apple would just bring eGPU support back and some slots to a Mac Pro. Then if they do catch up one day on Apple Silicon, great.
If M3 moves to 3nm, the CPU and GPU cores and core count could be a big jump over M1 to M2
Yeah, it sounds like the M3 is the chip many of us will need to wait for, where some of the bottlenecks might get worked out, and hopefully raytracing added on the GPU side. That's quite a long time to wait, though. If Apple has no stop-gap measure until then, the 3D and gaming communities are going to be pretty bummed.

What? We need raytracing urgently so the whole platform can benefit. Unreal Engine is seriously lacking because Mac doesn't support raytracing etc.
Ray tracing is needed for a lot of professionals and the fact that they want to put it on a phone means that we will get it on mac too which is overall win for all of us!
Re-read his post. There was a typo in the article, referred to ray tracing as ray TRACKING.
 
The framing of the issue as "setback" and failure is so sensationalising, not making it clear that part of research and development HAS to involve experimentation (DUH!) and various trials and errors. I wouldn't necessarily call it a "setback" which is too sensational and tries to capture the audience's mind in a particular way. Boo!

Anyone who has done any serious research and development will recognize that testing, development, and various failed approaches is part and parcel of the work.


A setback is a "reversal or check in progress." This is an objectively correct way to describe a last-minute removal of an innovative feature.
 
The future of gaming isn't streaming, it's mobile. These phones increase in power each year whereas video game consoles last six years between generations. And kids aren't as into tower PC gaming as the older generations were, yet they all have iPhones in the US and smartphones in general in the rest of the world. The ability to cast to a TV and use game controller/keyboard and mouse on phones is laying the groundwork for phones to displace PCs and consoles one day.
So using the iPhone like a tower PC? I could imagine that the young people use phones as small devices and not like a PC so they use the phones‘ display instead of connecting it to a keyboard mouse and TV.
 
Even though I'm a gamer, and I love
ray tracing on my PS5 connected to a
LG Oled C2 42❤, I'm not sure I want it on my iphone.
The battery drain and the heat it's not worth it, just as the article explained.
 
Ray tracing is way too taxing. If current PCs, ps5, xbox series consoles struggle with many compromises made to get it to run, smartphones will have it way worse. I don't think mobile games need ray tracing, just my opinion. I have seen it on current gen consoles/PCs, and it is not that significant to be honest. Most of the time I look past it because I am so busy fighting something else in the game or running across, plus I use performance mode most of the time and disable RT to get my games to run at a solid 60/120 fps.

Curious that they had to switch designs quickly, so that means they aren't planning far ahead. You'd think that Apple has at least three years ahead on product development, testing, ect, but with this story(and the mac pro problems) that's not the case. I'd say 18 month max on product roll out, Which is too fast. With all the virus problems Apple would have adjusted and replanned their line up. I would have overhauled their usual Yearly release schedule as it's not sustainable anymore. People don't want incremental lame updates but solid features and a reliable phone. Apple has over planned products that failed. Reduce, focus and give people what they want.

Some current gen games on the Xbox take up almost all of an entry level iPhone's storage. Unless you also think the future of gaming is also limited to Apple Arcade on the big screen, where if not streamed from the cloud would these games come from?

Well, so nice of them to revert and not pushing forward that idea. Perfecting one new major feature is the key to "just works" ideology.

The M1 was such a groundbreaking chip that Apple is afforded many years of brain drain and missed deadlines. I don’t expect Apple to surprise us again until at least M4.
This isn't a religion, it's a business. Apple *has been doing great but it appears the vicious poaching of employees has started to affect their progress.

For all I care, the 14 Series could be the last iPhones with Lightning port so I wouldn’t touch it. Next year could be a worthy improvement, along with USB-C.
 
this plus the absence of M Extreme workstation SOCs makes me feel worried about Apple's leadership in ARM chips.

Very bad news for med term future
 
Not surprising at all. Microprocessor design at this scale is one of the engineering tasks where close collaboration is essential, especially with teams the size Apple would have working on this.

This is exactly why Apple is pushing so hard on teams being on campus rather than WFH.
