Hole punch is a terrible design. Anything between the hole and the edge of screen becomes wasted unusable space. Why reduce usable screen space?

Any designated camera notch that is disconnected from the edge of the screen may as well be smack dab in the center of the display.

Any display that has this now is just showing that they can, and they already know they shouldn’t have.

I’m pretty sure Apple’s design team already knows this.

Under display cameras are a thing. Face ID doesn't need cameras - it needs scanners. It's entirely possible they've sorted out how to scan 'through' the display with no need for a cutout.
I hope so. In that case, the ideal scenario is a displayable area that simply stays clear during a scan and then can be used for rendering content afterward. Would be great if the iPhone got this.
Of course it begs the question why the massive notch on the MacBook Pro if not to house FaceID in the future. Perhaps a sub-display FaceID would require a thicker module and might not be compatible with mini-LED display tech.
I still think that was why Face ID didn't make it to the MBP, to allow time for in-notch (or even in-screen) compatible hardware. It's funny, but the thickness of the iPhone allows greater flexibility in this area.

If Apple does transition to this design, the Face ID hardware will need to be moved under the display.
Apple innovating with a new design ? I’ll believe it when I see it

I can see the headlines “hole punch design pushed back to ‘23 due to….sticking with notch for iPhone 14”

I don’t know, man. 6.1” phones are a little too big for me.
I’m really enjoying my old-school sized iPhone 13 mini. The 5.8” iPhone X/XS/11Pro was a good size.
The size difference between the 11 Pro and 12/13 Pro doesn’t feel that much different to me. I think the boxy design is what could make it feel a bit larger for others though.

I own that exact model, have not used it in 25 years or so!
Hah, I have one of those too! What's funny is the last time I used it was Apple-related! I had to punch a second notch into a few 5.25" floppy disks to un-write-protect the reverse side on my Apple II when in one of my retro-computing phases a few years ago.

Okay but what about the 2021 MacBook Pros? Why introduce the notch if they're planning to do away with it next year?

Edit: I honestly wondered why they didn't go punch hole this time around. They're certainly quite capable of it.

Welcome to the hole punch era :)

What about the pill shape? 💊

2022 is looking amazing!
That’s more plausible than a hole punch, but I don’t buy this rumor.

For one, they just madd the notch smaller. Why bother changing it if it’s gone next year?

Two, they introduced it to Macs.

Three, a hole isn’t enough for their sensor array. A pill could be.

i think this is more likely. keeps space for face id and it stands out from all the androids with hole punch displays including samsungs (apples biggest competitor). yeah i know some androids have a pill cut out but apple can easily make it their own. they might even make it a little longer to stand out a bit more.. **** i'm sure they could do it with a hole punch but again they need to have their phone stand out. apple products are a fashion accessory so apple know people want others to know they own an apple product. plus don't underestimate how clueless some people are. i have a a 12 pro max and still people ask me what kind of phone it is or "is that a samsung?"

I feel like 'notch' is an apple design that will last 10 years from iPhone X. Apple is intentionally adding it and it indicates this is an iPhone. I think iPhone 20 will lose it and not a day sooner.

Physical dimensions are very nearly identical between the 12/13 6.1” and the X/XS:
