I highly doubt this since they wouldn't be able to stuff all the camera and Face ID components in there. Apple has done absolutely nothing with under-the-display tech so far.
Exactly and they’ve shown their commitment to the notch by rolling it out on their MacBooks.

Just make the glass transparent to special wavelengths of light that the camera will use with its own illuminator, and use a combination of hardware and software to shift the image into the normal vision wavelengths. No need for notches, punches, slots etc. ! Of course goes for FaceId also.

I’m looking to upgrade my XS Max this coming year, but I really can’t stand hole punch displays. It’s infinitely more distracting and annoying than a notch. I hope this rumour is either incorrect or that Apple have found a way to properly hide/disguise the hole punch.

Hole punch is a terrible design. Anything between the hole and the edge of screen becomes wasted unusable space. Why reduce usable screen space?

Any designated camera notch that is disconnected from the edge of the screen may as well be smack dab in the center of the display.

Any display that has this now is just showing that they can, and they already know they shouldn’t have.

I’m pretty sure Apple’s design team already knows this.
They probably do know this but Marketing gave in to the torch-bearing pitchfork-waving Anti Bezel Society thugs.

When booking a repairman, you can have it cheap, quick, or with quality — pick any two.

When asking for an iPhone screen, you can have zero bezels and a notch, zero bezels and a hole punch, or slight bezels and no notch or hole punch, pick one of the three.

Hmm, what happened to the "iconic" notch? Without it, the iPhone will just look like any other smartphone. ?

Ha! Thank you for pointing this out. If this rumour comes true then they can’t use that silly go-to argument anymore when every other Android phone has hole punches.

You’ll probably see a lot of: “Wow! Yeah that actually looks a lot better. Even though I have said multiple times that a hole punch is terrible and far worse than a notch at least Apple’s hole punch looks better than all those other hole punches out there. Pre ordered!” though.

Guess we’ll have crappy front camera then. FaceID that glitches. Good times coming.

I'm quite sure that IPhone 13 Pro purchasers are ecstatic about this announcement.
The trade in value of phones this year were quite good. No reason to think that trading in the 13 Pro for 14 Pro won't be a good deal.

I would (and will) take this with a grain of salt. Apple is using the notch as a brand identifier (e.g. 14/16 MacBook Pros). I don't expect them to get rid of it until at least 2024-2025 when the next major MacBook Pro refresh comes. Until then I think the notch is here to stay.

I could actually see the reverse happening with the Pro models retaining a notch and the lower end models loosing the notch and relying on (only) Touch ID--in this scenario the Pros would have both--and the refreshed MacBook Air also having a lower quality 720p webcam with either a hole punch or built into a slim bezel. Maybe a notch could be a pro vs consumer differentiator for Apple.

Not going to happen. In case nobody noticed, the new MacBook Pro GOT a notch it never had and never needed. Apple loves its notch. It’s their ugly brand identity.
While I agree, they'll eventually need to get rid of that design abomination. Hopefully sooner than later.

They are probably going to come up with some other iconic design element to make up for this.

Just for the pro model: this could be a full-glass & all-black design, with cameras not clearly visible through the back glass that goes over the flush cameras, and no charging port, so that the device looks like a sleek black pebble.

if you want a small phone then just get the SE which Apple is apparently releasing a new version of next year.

in 2023 there will be another SE with a more modern design so again no need for a Mini. maybe in 2024 we might see a smaller non SE iPhone but i doubt it.
SE does not stand for "Small Enough", but "Special Edition". Its Apple's designation for "oh look at what we were able to build for cheap, by cramming existing parts into a case!". That's why SE updates are so unpredictable.

It might be possible they recycle the current iPhone Mini designs into a SE, but there's no guarantee. The next SE could based on the 12 Pro Max size for all we know.

Why do you update every iteration?
I suppose the best answer is I can but there is more to it than that. First, my year old phone usually fetches 80% of its value. Second, my work depends on my cell phone, it is my office so it needs to be working well all the time, good battery etc. Lastly, I am in IT so my clients expect me to know all the details of the new tech.

You mean they haven't released anything with under-the-display tech so far. That doesn't mean they couldn't be working on it right now. This is a trillion-dollar company, you've got to assume they're doing a little R&D we don't know about, yeah?
