Anything is better than a notch more screen back is a good thing, bring it on
No, its not...this is a mess, think about the future

I hope that exclamation mark looking design isn't chosen.
What's the point in having that small space and it breaks symmetry lines doing that.

I think this variant will be adopted by :apple:

Looks clean but then it means the top area with the same width of the pill is useless to project an image on anyway! So why not stick with an even smaller notch with minimal depth - have the depth that the blank area+pill is in that area and we're good.

Notch haters, I hope you’re proud of yourselves for making Apple resort to this truly awful design. I was thinking of getting the Pro next year, but I genuinely might stick with the regular 14 if it looks like this.

More poor design. It’s going on 5 years & under display tech still “isn’t ready.” Where’s the innovation

I can't see Apple doing an off-center design like that. It will either be an extended pill, or given the mix of rumors, I think that it will be a pill shape in the center, with the dot off to the side, but only that part will be under the display. Because it's projecting instead of receiving light, I think this may make it more likely. The sensors to receive the dot projection back to the phone will be in the pill. The dot projector just has to scatter in a way that can determine depth, so if there is some interference from passing through the display, I would think that should be able to be accounted for in software.

I think apple is just trying to find leaks at this point, while getting feedback on design ideas.

Still looks better than the notch
It does, even if it does not look great. Most people defending the notch are just opposed to the change. If you showed all these same people a picture of the notch and a picture of the pill/hole design before the launch of iPhone X, 100% of them would have chosen the "smaller one that doesn't take up as much of the screen".

I guess it doesn't bother me that much but I still rather have more actual screen I think? Especially when watching videos.
Eh, it's still just a phone. The notch or no notch isn't really making a difference. I watch videos on iPad so I can see them.

Two irregularly shaped cutouts side-by-side seem very half-baked to me. If openings are indeed needed for components, I think Apple designers should/will combine into one shape.

“The two hole concept will be unique to Apple”

I miss the times when Apple used to make products look amazing, not “unique to Apple”.
- Gigantic camera bump
- notch
- two unsymmetrical holes
ugh…
What’s next? Car with square tires?
Would certainly be “unique to Apple”
Nothing you listed is even unique to Apple.

No surprise to be honest. The true “under the the screen” tech probably is not ready yet.
Likely has to do with the polarization of OLED screens and the infrared dot projection. It may never be able to be an under the screen technology. Not that it matters at all, I'm not clamoring for more real estate on my phone - we're truly at the point where nothing matters but battery life as far as I'm concerned.

It doesn’t look streamlined at all. The new notch on the 13 series is a much better and sleeker solution than this. It’s going to stick out like a sore thumb with that useless space above and between these cutouts.
