I will quickly turn this off. Just like I did on my Apple Watch.
Agreed
It's more distressing that they find this to be a valuable use of R&D time/energy/money
On a phone it's of really questionable value (vs on the Watch for instance)

Yes, because every time when looking at a phone it's just so much more comfortable to first pick it up to then manually turn the screen on to see if you have warning and/or see the time, so much better than having an always-on display.Agreed

Pointless waste of battery life and I can already see the mega-thread in the iPhone section: My display has burned-in! HALP.Agreed

there could be a similar implementation with the same proximity sensor that’s used to make the display go to black when you have your iphone up to your ear on a call. Will it be able to detect if it's in your pocket? I could see always-on being great if your phone is sitting on a table or desk, but if it's in your pocket surely the battery drain and heat wouldn't be worth it to have the display on?

Uhm... no, buy an iPad.I just wanna see the next iPhone Pro Max support the Apple Pencil.
I second this.I just wanna see the next iPhone Pro Max support the Apple Pencil.
I hate to bring this argument due to who said it, but that's not what the iPhone was intended for... a stylus. But the argument stands, that's what the iPad is for.I second this.
But….even if it did, I’d prefer to have it built into the iPhone (Which won’t happen). The Galaxy Note line executed this so well with the S-Pen. Otherwise it’s just another item to carry around. Of course, there could be an iPhone case where the Apple Pencil could magnetically attach, so it’s ready at will.
See my post above for a solution where the Apple Pencil could be magnetically attached to the iPhone case, that way it’s not built into the iPhone. It’s doable.Uhm... no, buy an iPad.
I missed your post by a second. On the doable part, it is doable, but unnecessary.See my post above for a solution where the Apple Pencil could be magnetically attached to the iPhone case, that way it’s not built into the iPhone. It’s doable.
A stylus and Apple Pencil are two different things. The Apple Pencil has loads of potential for the iPhone, it’s just a matter if Apple ever enables that or not.I hate to bring this argument due to who said it, but that's not what the iPhone was intended for... a stylus. I agree fundamentally they are different things, but the point is that the pencil is still a stylus type accessory and the iPhone's true history was geared towards not requiring, needing or wanting one in any function.A stylus and Apple Pencil are two different things. Yeah, Apple should only spend their time on what you want, not what some other randos would like!
Yes, that was under Steve’s direction with a stylus, but a lot has changed with Apple. Either way, it doesn’t seem like it’s something desirable that they want to do, as they could have for many years and they haven’t.I agree fundamentally they are different things, but the point is that the pencil is still a stylus type accessory and the iPhone's true history was geared towards not requiring, needing or wanting one in any function.
That's part of the always-on display tech that came out over a decade ago. Will it be able to detect if it's in your pocket? I could see always-on being great if your phone is sitting on a table or desk, but if it's in your pocket surely the battery drain and heat wouldn't be worth it to have the display on?
Since we are getting more screen real estate with the "i" cut out... How about in the top left or right corners when the phone screen is off we get like mini notifications that could be the "always on" function. It could be a sold circle like the good old days of the samsung notification LED (I will probably get a thumbs down for this) or miniature icons of the app that has notifications set up for it.
Less pixels lit up, less battery life (probably not much if any but would be a nice, clean feature).
Apple purposefully delays features their competitors have had for 5 years so they can make every new iPhone seem like a decent update. It is so obvious at this point.
