Agreed. The AppleWatch hides image retention better. But an iPhone? I can already see the mega-thread in the iPhone forum complaining on burn-in.

I would hope not.
My 1+ 9 Pro AMOLED screen I would think would be more susceptible and it is great.
I would expect the iPhone screen to be even better.

But yeah ... I would expect the mega-thread on SBI here

I stand behind what I said. Nowadays, with a normal usage of a portable device (be it a laptop or a phone) the most of the energy goes into the display's brightness.
You want proof?
If I surf the web with my M1 MBP at, say, 1/3 of the brightness, it'll last for something like 12-15h. If I set the brightness to max, then it'll last for half the time, if not less.
oled screens don't have a backlit plane but they will still use some power to stay lit.

Meh, but it’ll be nice to have the option. We will be told how revolutionary always-on is and 13 Pro models won’t have this feature due to hardware limitation. Please upgrade to 14 Pro so AAPL can moon

For sure. But I don’t see this for the iPhone 14 as well. They want to sell their Apple Watch.

Whatever the technology, as of today, a lit display consumes energy.
And sure, OLED are better than LED displays.

I would also hope not, but whatever tech Apple uses, it is still in the end an LCD which will be prone to SBI.

It would be nice if Apple offered this feature on the older OLED iPhones too, giving users the option of turning it off if they are worried about battery life. Several mid range phones like the Pixel 3a also have AOD while not having a variable refresh rate display, so not sure why Apple would only want to bring it only to the latest phone with all the LTPO bells and whistles.

They could have had AOD since at least the iPhone X. No "Pro" refresh rate needed.

NO!!

Battery life is bad enough. On my apple watch I turned off everything and it still only lasts just over a day... Imagine this **** on my phone. Jesus apple do you have focus groups do you know what customers want? They don't want a thinner phone each year we want thicker battery & a god damn USBC port.

If it's like that on other devices, the AOD shouldn't take up much battery power. It will just always show the time in a very low power display. Basically just bright enough so you can see it. And it usually floats across the screen -- shouldn't have an issue with screen burn in either.

I just want the *option* to do it. If you all don't want it, then don't turn it on. Simple as that.

This is a Feature I loved with my Samsungs over the Years since I keep my phone on the Desk or next to my bed. I like glancing over and seeing the time. I was so disappointed that the 13 did not have this. It was a rumored feature that I was looking forward to still have when I switched from Android to the 13 Pro Max. Not looking to upgrade to a 14 Pro Max for this feature though. Unless it can be implemented to the 13 Pro Max I will wait for the 15 or 16 Pro Max. These devices are just too expensive to replace every year.

Apple claims always on display has no effect on Watch battery life, but this is demonstrably not true. Depending how they implement this it could be useful, and battery life is not as precious on the phone. But if it’s limited to the 14 I’m not interested enough to upgrade.

Article headline is kind of funny because this technology was implented years ago with much lesser displays, so it’s not like there’s any reason they couldn’t have done it already.

Already a thing,
I don’t think that’s what they asked for. Unless I’m mistaken, that toggle only limits the maximum refresh rate of the display to 60 hertz instead of 120. It does NOT stop the display from varying the refresh rate from 10-60 fps
