I prefer caseless but I’ve bought a silicone back cover for my 14 pm to hopefully make it less square-edged. For years I used a slip sleeve for my iPhones which is probably the best of both worlds - bare phone in use, protected in transport. I only stopped because the puppy liked to chew the case but won’t touch the bare phone so that suddenly felt safer :D

I’ve been going caseless since the 12 because I find the squared shaped so much more comfortable to hold, reminds me of the 5 and below which I also never had cases for. Started using them from the 6 to the 11 then stopped again. I do the iUP and have AC built in. I also baby my phones so they are usually always pristine.

I hate every case I’ve ever seen or tried. I feel the phones are already too big, bulky, and especially heavy even caseless. That said, I now always have a case and even more importantly a screen protector. As years have gone by, the screens have become more scratchable. I think that as they increase drop resistance, scratch resistance goes down. I remember TRYING to scratch an iPhone 4 (like with various metal things) and not being able too, yet an iPhone 14 can be scratched with just a fingernail.

As for a case - I wish there was a lanyard attachment like with the new AirPods Pro 2nd generation. That would make me go caseless for certain.

I am caseless on my iPhone 14 pro black. I put on a screen protector and a very thin “carbon fiber” sticker type backing that came with the screen protector.

The backing helps it not be as slippery and looks kind of cool too. Doesn’t interfere with the original color. I figure that’ll help minimize the chances I drop it.

I also noticed the black stainless steel frame feels a bit more grippy than my blue 13 pros did. Not sure if thats just my imagination but I like it.

I'm the same. I love the squared phones. Used the bumper cases on 4 and 5, but then 6 onwards the curved edges made it so difficult to hold had to go with cases. Went caseless again with 12P and now 14PM. Oh I did keep my 7 matte black caseless for a while though because it was so beautiful.

I always used a case and screen protector with all my iPhones, one day i decided to not use the case on my XS Max at the time and dropped it and the back shattered.
Didn’t have Apple Care and Apple wanted 800$ CAD to fix the back of the phone. I will never let that happen again. Now i have Apple Care + and still use a case and screen protector on the 14Pro Max. I will only remove the case when I’m home. Nowhere else.

The leather case on my iPhone X has served me well over the past 5 years. I definitely plan to do the same when I upgrade next year to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. I keep these devices for long; they are an investment so, I will make sure it’s well protected. Never used a screen protector, so I don’t see why I would now.

Good point — this is exactly my fear. As much as I like going sans case, this is always a possible scenario. Sorry you had to go through it yourself.

Not going to leave the huge camera bumps exposed. That's almost a sure thing to break if you drop in on it's back.

iPhone is a meticulously designed piece of applied art. I recently bought a Porsche and it also is a meticulously designed piece of applied art. I don’t put a cover on this car when I ride. It might get some scratches, it might get hit. There’s an insurance for that. But we need to learn to appreciate craftsmanship. We need to get pleasure by just looking on something. Beauty of life, among other things, means exactly this.

You're only going to have your phone a few years tops before you upgrade, so who cares if it gets some scratches? This isn't a keepsake that you're trying to protect for the next 20 years. Go naked and enjoy it
Retaining resell value. It doesn’t matter if it’s a phone or a 20year keepsake, if there’s an intention to sell it again, you would want to keep it in good care as much as possible.

You said it yourself, insurance. If you don’t have insurance on your Porsche, would you treat it the same way?
On an iPhone with endless AppleCare+, sure, go naked, that’s what the insurance is for. ;)

So the key here is getting that insurance, then you decide it go naked or not.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a apple leather case that I take off and on occasionally. I just love how the phone looks without a case. Black iPhone looks amazing this year. Thinking doing the same thing and just stick to Apple care.

I used to have a case on all the time on my iPhones, but decided to try going ceaseless with my 13 Pro Max and now my 14 Pro Max the last month or so. I still use my Apple case sometimes when I will be in rugged territory or if I am wearing shorts or jeans that the phone slips out too easily when caseless. I do have AppleCare+ in case tragedy does every strike.

I do have a screen protector on though as it still scratches very easily when even taking a small tumble on a dirty floor. The back glass is very durable in my experiences as wells as the camera lenses. I usually have my Apple leather wallet attached to the back too which helps absorb a lot of the impact when it does take a tumble out of my hand or pocket. I decided I‘m gonna try and enjoy the full beauty of this phone and not worry so much about every little nick that might happen. Hopefully I don’t jinx myself, but I have never once cracked the front or back glass of any of my 10 iPhones over the years even with almost never using a screen protector until recently.

I won’t go so far as to call it “madness” to go without a case, as it’s a subjective decision and comes down to personal preference.

However - most people who use a phone every day will drop it a few times over the course of the phone’s life cycle. Having the case lowers anxiety. The basic Apple iPhone silicone case has a lip that protects the screen from catastrophic damage under most drop scenarios. Thus, while I always have the silicone case on, I stopped using a screen protector in 2019, and I’d never go back.

As title suggests I’m so close to going full time caseless with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I spent the last 3 months using my 13 Pro Max without a case and found that once I got used to it in the hand it was perfectly comfortable to hold. I did not drop or bang it once (in fact have only dropped one iPhone since the 3).

So far with the 14 I have the Apple Leather case but do keep taking it off every now and again. I guess because it’s brand new “we” tend to baby our new phones but as I say, thinking of going caseless.

I have AppleCare Plus for any bad accidents. I do know that that does not cover scratches etc (which would drive me nuts!) but again, I’ve NEVER had any scratches on any of my. iPhones. I am careful with my iPhones and am always aware of where they are and where I place them down.

Anyway, enough rambling, I’m interested in your thoughts. I know there’ll be for and against views but am interested to know? So, caseless or with case? Thanks.

Good luck. My 13 Pro Max has been dropped twice in the last week, once on the oak floor in my lounge and once on the tiled floor in my kitchen. I can’t imagine not putting it in a case as I’d smash it within days. I don’t like the sharp feel of these phones without a case either, so don’t get the obsession on Mac Rumours if I’m honest.

Generally I go naked always when I’m in my known surroundings but I do keep a case handy for those occasions when I don’t know what to expect, such as when I’m travelling to a different country.

I do put a glass screen protector though and I’m generally careful with the phone to not drop it or put it on a hard unclean surface.

My case is AppleCare+.

Cosmetic damage is not covered by apple care +
