How does it determine you've left the room? What if it's a really big room or you're outside? 🤔

Wouldn't it be more likely determined by the distance between the two devices?
Proximity data will be used. How far apart the watch and the phone needs to be before this kicks in is still to be determined I guess. If your room is that large I can only assume you won't be able to see your screen from across the way anyways.

It sounds like that philosophical question:
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

But instead:
Does your iPhone’s always on display turn itself off if there’s no one around to see it?

I’ll see myself out….

Exactly! It's probably based on distance.

Just pointing out that it probably doesn't detect when you've "left the room", which is how the article phrased it.

If you aren't with your phone and the screen isn't on does it really matter?
ok, I was referring to the always-on display being not always-on. But lets play along: can you imagine a scenario where the always on display might be useful to TWO people, where one of them wears an Apple Watch? And then leaves the room, and the display turns off? This did not take huge imagination here. But again, my quip is with the so-called always-on display not being really always-on. Does my always-on apple watch pick sneaky points in the day to not be always-on? NO! no sneaky business there.

I would also love to see more options to intelligently turn off the screen. For example, setting a conditional Focus mode where if the phone or watch detects TV background noise during a certain hour, the screen turns off.

As great as the always on feature is, it also makes it harder to take time away from technology.

First feature I’ll be turning off as soon as I get mine on Friday. It’s a waste of battery on my Apple Watch and a waste of battery here. What do I care what my display is doing when I’m not looking at it?

Exactly.

Apple says "hey we found another way to extend the battery the peanut gallery is always whining about"

Peanut Gallery: THIS IS SNEAKY!
always on? or often on? what if two people (your old grandparents for instance) like to look at their always on display but it keeps turning off every time granddad leaves to take a leak?

Always on (when you are within range of your apple watch and looking at the phone.) :p:D

Will it change with screen brightness like with high brightness compared to when I sleep it’s on low brightness will always on be the same

Can always-on display be shut off?

I like being able to set my phone down and ignore it whenever I'm not using it. I'm certain I'd find it distracting and irritating to have it always on. Otherwise, looks like a great phone.
