It’s crazy to see lightning become obsolete after being so superior when it came out to the Android standard mini USB. It’s time to move on. I don’t take a lot of images off my phone through cable, actually I don’t do that with any, but it’s good to see indicators on alignment to USB-C

The iPad „Pro“ ships with an USB-C Connector since 2018. Apple explained in 2018 that you need the transfer speed of USB-C for a „Pro“ model.
The same is true for the iPhone Pro, but surprisingly, there is a difference between "Pro" and "Pro" in Apple's eyes.

To make this story even more ridiculous, Apple already has all the parts and drivers it needs from the iPad Pro. But this shows the nature of Apple, it's all about the money. Apple doesn't want to ship the best products, it only wants to ship products that will allow it to make the most profit.

This strategy allows Apple to sell the iP14 twice. This year without and next year with an USB-C port imtergrated.

Well this just killed iPhone 14 Pro envy for me. Waiting for the 15.
if the 14PM had USBC id have got it but it hasnt so it makes it an easy decision for me. ill wait for iPhone 15 and if that doesnt have it ill wait for iPhone 16. i refuse to buy another device with lightning port!

they are doing the minimum and holding stuff back/staggering features. iPhone 15 will be a basic refresh of 14 models. you can obviously see what they are planning...

iPhone 15/Plus will get Dynamic Island, A16 Bionic (4nm) with 6GB RAM.
iPhone 15 Pro will get A17 Bionic (3nm) with 8GB RAM and under display/home button touch id.
iPhone 15 Pro Max will get the same and a periscope camera.

All come with USB-C

If all you are sending is smaller files, yes, it usually works just fine. It you try to use it on larger files (10-30GB), the transfer fails like 9/10 times. YOU might be able to go all wireless, but most of us still care to have the fastest and most reliable method to transfer data. Wireless speeds are somewhat catching up to wired speeds, but they still won't be as reliable as a wired connection. WiFi 7 is still a couple of years out at least before it's affordable enough for the consumer market. It'll probably take even longer for Apple to implement it into their products judging by how they are dragging their feet on 6E.

It's not very common to deal with 10-30Gb files on a mobile phone.

The article is focused on photography and file sizes less than 100Mb. Transfering a collection of photos is were AirDrop excel.

Good luck restoring 1TB of data from your old iPhone to a new one over WiFi 6. Honestly, the part of getting a new iPhone I despite the most. In theory and on paper with the published speeds, it should work well, it never does.

If Apple is going to go the "no/old port" route, they should at least support the best and newest WiFi and BT standards and do it in such a way that the implementations are credible. Apple does many things well, their networking stacks/layers are anything but in that category.

How often are you restoring your iPhone?

Also, the iPhone will be up and working before it's restored all the data which is fine for most people.

You seem to have a very esoteric workflow.

I agree with your prediction. Yes, they are holding back/staggering features for more profit. They are not giving customers their best products.

Even with that: I'm at 11hrs to restore/migrate data to my new 14PM from my 13PM (I have 1.5Gbps up and down, business connection, fiber directly into my premises, I'm the only person on my wifi network and it tests absolutely perfectly for all other uses).

Wireless isn't ready for backup/restore of any appreciable size device.

You seem to think the network is the bottle neck for iCloud restore. It isn't. Even if you had much slower Internet connection and just a normal Wifi connection, your restore wouldn't be much faster. The restore process is far removed from traditional copying a bunch of files one after another.

iCloud backup and restore is optimised for:
  • Reducing the data stored by Apple to a minimum
  • Getting the phone up and running in a minimum state
  • Securiity
Apple offer a faster alternativ which is transferring between two phones directly, but even here I think they use direct Wifi connections not involving your Wifi network at all.

That's why after 15 years I moved to something else... Fold 4

I just cancelled my order for 8 iPhone Pro Max. Apple is weak in doing good things for their customers. All they want is your money. They don´t care about us.

So you ordered 8 iPhones thinking they had USB-C?

Didn't it occur to you to check since the iPhone has never had a USB port?

It would be a fair question to ask in an interview. I’m just curious what the reason is. My usage doesn’t require USB-C, so this is a non-issue for me, but it does seem strange that they haven’t updated the port. Is there a new USB standard being released soon?
Well, there was a theory that Apple wanted to transition to a completely port-less iPhone, and THAT was the reason why they didn’t switch to usb-c. But it’s been so long now, i dunno.

WiFi 6 is 9.6 Gbps.
9.6 Gbps Theoretical only with 4 streams @ HT160 (160 MHz width)…

Not even the MacBook Pro has more than 2 streams let alone HT160. You are looking at 2 streams with HT80 on the iPhone and MBP. Theoretically 1.2 Gbps with actual/real world peak probably averaging 600-700 Mbps so less than 2x USB2 speeds and only a fraction of the basic USB3 speeds.

Most client devices top out at 2 streams with some Android phones and most of the Windows laptops sold with Intel 92XX-AX2XX and some MTK7291 also cards having HT160 support.

Apple recommends using iCloud Photos to access ProRAW files in full resolution on a Mac

Apple's marketing for selling iCloud storage borders on threatening. I just deleted the photos i had on the free iCloud - uploaded without my permission before i figured out I had to turn off the checkbox - and received a threatening email that I'm using almost half of my free space and I should buy an upgrade.

Aggressive marketing tends to trigger an equal and opposite reaction on me sadly. But they could at least stop turning on their services automatically on updates...

Who needs needs faster USB when you have wifi? What year is it? Next year you'll have wifi 7 and this will be irrelevant. If you want to use an old fashioned cable, buy an android phone.
The Wi-Fi-6 up to the 14 Pro Max is not even at HT160 (HT80 so around 600-800 Mbps real world) and is only a fraction of basic USB3 specs and I mean comparing to the 5Gbps one not even the 10 or 20 GBPs variant.. Maybe not a big deal for the basic user or me either but for people who maybe record a lot and need to transfer stuff often for editing could be a hassle. Seems your argument is more like “I don’t need it so no one else should either” “If you don’t agree with me buy something else” … Also FYI some of the High end Androids actually have HT160 support…

I never really bought that theory — on the other hand, with 5G speeds potentially getting to between 10-20 Gbps, maybe they thought the infrastructure for this would be built by now, and there wouldn’t be a great need for a wired connection with wireless speeds this high? I was thinking it had something to do with knowing what standard might be legislated first so they don’t have to change it again. But that doesn’t really make any sense either.

I think the USB C port might be more fragile. If you look inside there’s a tongue that could be snapped off with over enthusiastic plugging.

For what it’s worth the standard is overdue when big reliable data transfers are needed.

I just wonder if potential usb3 interference with WiFi and Bluetooth radios might have been a factor against upgrading the lightning to usb 3 all round.

Is there a big enough user base of cellular iPad Pro 2017
Models that noticed issues when they tried to use 4g data while transferring images off an SD card for example?

For me, I’d look forward to a more universal charger standard but I’m aware of how balkanised the cables are in the usb c space, I can see the complaints flood in from people using USB c 2.0 charging cables for data transfer.

At least a phone with wireless charging can charge the phone and use air drop and iCloud sync will still be an option if a user breaks their USB-C port 😂

AirDrop is very fast. Wi-Fi works well too. This is annoying but it's hardly a problem compared to video. Which is far far larger. It's clear I think that Apple is going away from lightning next year…
AirDrop is fast but you’re limited to Apple to Apple transfers. If you’re editing videos professionally, generally people want the flexibility of external storage devices.

However, I believe the 15 lineup will drop the lightning to portless and they will skip usb-c altogether.

"No we really need our own connector because we are soo super inventing new high speed things"
Apple can be so full of it sometimes, if the EU has to push your tech by changing the laws, you are inventing it wrong.

It's very common to deal with that sizes on a mobile phone. That's why the storage is getting bigger.

Back in 2020, when I got my iphone mini, it also replaced my ipod classic. More than 100GB of music and audiobooks.

And I'm not a hardcore phone user. I like Desktops, Laptops and the ipad more when I'm not on the go.

I have done a lot of photography in the past decade. Even with a 12MP camera, I took multiple 64GB cards into vacation. Nowadays the phone cameras have become decent enough to take some photos on the go. Again, that's plenty GB of photos after a vacation where I didn't actually plan on taking much photos and didn't bring my real camera with me.

Also, many games now have plenty of gigabytes of application data, even on mobile. That stuff has to be backed up.

I have used airdrop once in my life, when somebody who also had apple wanted to send me a pdf document. With all that configuring to enable airdrop, an e-mail or a message in whatsapp/telegramm/threema would have been easier.
