iPhone 14 design was baked in long before the EU announcement. By not rushing to redesign, they saved billions of $ and probably didn't lose a single sale to customers ranting and raving about the lack of USB-C support.

You may stay assured that Apple has been developing designs for USB-C iPhones for many years now.
They're just delaying as much as possible.

I don’t see the issue. By the time you have taken your photo and gotten back to your computer. The photo would have synced via iCloud and already be on your computer. Everyone is complaining about instant transfer. But apple is great at designing things that just work and work in the background. So when you go to use that photo you took this morning it’s already on your computer.

But what would it hurt to also have a faster wired connection for file transfer? We’re talking about the richest company in the world man and a device that has the “Pro” moniker attached to it. Or Apple should just say to the world stop whining and complaining about the slow lightning port because our high end “Pro” phones are meant to transfer files via iCloud and Airdrop only and the port is supposed to be used strictly for charging purposes. Why are you trying to make justifications and come up with excuses when Apple doesn’t bother at all to explain things?

I’m doing random write of a lot of small files here. Like uncompressed source file.

The numbers you quoted are for sequential write of partition aligned data, like zip or pirated big movies.
Or large ProRes recordings or 48MP RAW images from a iPhone 14 Pro

only and the port is supposed to be used strictly for charging purposes.
And carplay, and that's one use that really is kind of iffy given lightning's stability. Lots of cutouts going over potholes.

I switched to using an android phone and android Auto because it was so bad.

My wife’s phone and my phone are 4 years old and there are no issues with CarPlay in either phone.

There's nothing Pro Max about this. Our 11PM is 256 GB but its 200 GB of iCloud is full for the last few months due to Photos and iMessage. We really don't want to pay $10/mo for 2 TB when 1 TB is more than enough. But Apple doesn't offer 1 TB. Where does this leave us since last night? All of this can be solved with USB 3.0 or even offering a 1 TB option at reduced pricing. I feel the USB 2.0 on the iPhone is intentional to "encourage" users to upgrade their iCloud plans.

1. Initially tried 11PM to 14PM wireless but it may have missed stuffs - took about an hour.
2. Decided backup to a laptop using iTunes like we have always done before - took about 90 min.
3. Now restoring to the 14PM - currently stuck at "1 hour" estimating for the last 30 min and only 15% done.

Modernizing the IO on the iPhone is beyond we will get it on the next version. It is either a strategy or laziness. Unfortunately neither speaks well of Apples view of their customers.

Even with the latest Asus 6E router and a M1 Max MBP 16, airdrop transfer speeds are still around USB 2.0 speeds with my iphone 13. I doubt the 14 is any faster here

Airdrop doesn’t make any difference regardless of your wireless router. It’s direct-to-device transfer. It’s simplified for when you take a MacBook off the grid of any Wi-Fi access, you can still AirDrop. (To check for yourself, make sure you’re on the same Wi-Fi network and go a few rooms over and attempt AirDrop- you’ll see it doesn’t even connect).

The only way you’re going to see any tangible difference is to use some form of file sharing (beit through the files app and connecting to your network that way) or a third party app.

Even then, you’re best suited to put your phone right next to the router to get optimal speeds.

I backed up my 1 TB iPhone 13 Pro Max with this method and just turned off auto-lock and used my Mac to answer iMessage/ SMS & phone calls for the staggering 2.5-3 hours it took going at an average of 70 megs a second.

And before anybody wonders why it wasn’t doing full Wi-Fi speed, you’ll only get your absolute max when you send large files (like a huge video) - when you’re moving a ton of small files, the read speed from the phone drops significantly, just like a computer typically would.

Finally, nobody should be surprised. When Apple either updates lightning to a better speed (unlikely) or gives us some flavour of USB-C - only then will they market it as some glorious feature they invented.

I think throwing the word “Pro” on a device that can’t transfer via cable beyond a a gigabit is pathetic, especially in 2022.

It's not luck, it's solid engineering. Could turn around and say those who are having problems with wired carplay abused their phones and cables.
Yeah, you can say that if you want. What you can’t say though for sure is that iPhones deserve to be called “Pro” devices when they don’t provide a fast wired transfer for large files. Apple just messed up big time on this department that’s a fact.

Apple can call the phone anything they want. People can buy it if the phone meets their requirements or not if the phone doesn’t.

Sure, the new and all over the place Apple can call the iPhone something as misleading as “Pro” and make itself look like a fool and get a flack for such an absurd mislead.

Yeah, I have an iPhone 13 "Pro" and it is kind of funny how little "Pro" means. Pro, in this case just means better than the other one, which is still true with the 14. The concept of a "Pro" phone or a "Pro" set of ear buds is pretty humorous. I always go with the Pro model, but that doesn't mean that the name isn't goofy.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models feature an upgraded rear camera system that can shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos, which retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility. 48-megapixel ProRAW photos are very large files that clock in at around 75MB each, according to Apple, and sometimes even larger.

Despite these very large image sizes, we have confirmed that the Lightning connector on the iPhone 14 Pro models remains limited to USB 2.0 speeds of up to 480 Mbps like previous models, meaning that transferring full-resolution 48-megapixel ProRAW photos to a Mac or other device with a Lightning cable will take a long time.

Apple recommends using iCloud Photos to access ProRAW files in full resolution on a Mac or other Apple devices, or to transfer the photos off an iPhone wirelessly by using AirDrop, but the Lightning connector certainly remains a bottleneck.

Back in 2015, the original iPad Pro's Lightning connector supported USB 3.0, which was capable of up to 5 Gbps speeds based on the spec at the time, but Apple has evidently chosen not to move in this direction for the iPhone. Fortunately, rumors suggest that all iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C port instead of Lightning, which should result in speeds up to 10 Gbps or even up to 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt 3 support.

how about apple start supporting raw files from new cameras a lot faster than a whole year A7IV

Sure. Apple will sell tens of millions of iPhone 14s, if not hundreds of millions. Do you honestly think they care what flack they get on social media? Do you think it will cause them to do things differently. Do you think they care if some critics don’t buy their phones?

Doesn’t matter how many millions of iPhones they will sell. We should still call them out and hopefully somebody in higher positions might care enough, if not that’s still fine. Some people will be praising Apple blindly and avoiding constructive criticism and others will tell it as it is. We know it may be futile but at least we don’t look like mindless Apple consumer drones.

It depends if it looks like sour grapes or constructive criticism and if apple will lose any appreciable amount of sales.

Pretty audacious to tell someone who may like the iphone 14 they are praising apple blindly, as well as assuming those who criticize apple are being objective.

I personally haven’t yet tried to transfer anything from my pro max using the lightning connector so I’ll reserve judgment.

They really should care, at least a little, it might spread. And given how it easy it is to communicate globally, even for us normal people, you do not want it to spread.

Yes, yes and yes.
