I loved my green iPhone 12 (that my son now uses) but could only see the color around the camera because I put a case on immediately anyway. But a bright pop of color around the camera would be fun if Otterbox comes out with some cute and protective cases - their color choices have been rather boring with the protection level I need.

That's MAINLY the reason why people buy iPhones.
That would be weird. But when I think about it, not really that surprising.

Back in '07, I, like literally every Mac user on the planet, was pining for a phone that played nice with Macs. At that time, the closest thing to a Mac-friendly smartphone was the Palm Tree 650. While better than previous phones I owned, and capable of interfacing with my Macs, it was still a pretty awful user experience. So when that first iPhone landed, it was such a breath of fresh air and a no-brainer purchase for all Mac users. For me, that has not changed. Are there areas in which I'd like to see iPhone/iOS evolve/improve? Of course. But there is nothing so glaringly broken about iPhone/iOS, combined with something so remarkably functional in Androidland, that switching has ever once been a consideration of mine. Of course, YMMV.

Clearly, smartphones, as a category, have stagnated. And I dot' mean that as a negative. We've simply hit a ceiling (of sorts) with what we need/expect from/of a smart phone. Most modern mobile phones are ridiculously capable. Sure, improved cameras, processors and batteries are all nice to have, but they're incremental. They're not really pushing the category forward because, again, we've likely hit the ceiling. The enthusiasm around thinner bezels is pretty much all the proof one needs to know where we are, from a category potential perspective - maxed. Insert foldables. Conceptually, I get it - it's a Phone. It's an iPad mini. While this is all the rage in some circles, the overall category still feels like something is... missing. Or, not quite right. Either the category either needs more time to mature or someone needs to step in and do it better than what we have today. These conditions are typically when Apple steps in and ignites a tepid category. While I'm not antsy for Apple's take on a foldable, nor the undoubtedly breath-taking price point, I am interested to see the effect they have on the industry, should they decide to launch some sort of foldable. I feel there is enough opportunity there for them to make some noise. We shall see.

Back on topic: iPhone colors. Woo.

Side note: just this past week, I fired up an iPhone 3G and 4s for the first time in years. They both power on, but the 3G Home button no longer works. If I tap into an app, I can't return to the Home screen. But the OS is amazing - especially through the lens of the Palm OS mentioned above. The leap that was made in that category (seemingly overnight), was quite insane. Another thing that immediately struck me was how tiny those devices are in-hand - and so pocketable! My set of car keys is bulkier. 🤪😂

I mean, they did with the 13... although not until mid-cycle. I'm a sucker for green things and it did get me to upgrade from my perfectly fine 12 😋
Same. I never update mid cycle if I can help it but my Chinese iPhone 12 was not compatible with Verizon so here I am with a 13 in a color I really wanted for once 😂

I don’t get why this news gets over 500 likes on X (more than new feature stories)…

The way colour’s discussed & prioritised on Macrumors is very strange to me.

I feel that the colours of the non-pro iPhone are there to prevent people from buying them and instead go for the Pro models. For the same reason the non-pro iPhones also only have two cameras. People should feel embarrassed for opting for the cheaper version. Sadly that strategy works. Wouldn't it be cool if the "cheap" and the expensive versions looked the same and only the owner knew what version he bought? Porsche for example allows you to hide pretty well that you opted for the most expensive model. You can even choose to have the $8,000 ceramic composite breaks painted in black instead of the famous yellow to pretty much hide them. It seems the designs of iPhone Pro models are very much about showing off. Some people prefer more secrecy.
Apple’s missing out on a lot of $$$ by not offering deeper personalization options. They’re clearly trying to slough off the Ahrendts-era influences ($10k Apple Watch, “boutique” store setup with a secretive flow of the right associates you’re supposed to talk to in the right order…) but rich people would easily pay 2x the normal cost of a Pro Max if they could get it in black/red, white/gold, teal/bronze, hot pink, etc. Just look at the two-tone aesthetic dominating in cars that cost $250k+.

When will we be able to have personalized engravings on our phones like AirPods? I have a few ideas for loved ones.
