Doesn't make sense given you have to shoot in ProRAW to get 48MP on iPhone 14 Pro and ProRAW isn't available on non-Pro phones. Unless they're just using the 48MP for pixel binning or iOS 17 introduces a 48MP non-ProRAW mode.
I guessed last year that they would release 48 mp for base 15 so that they could get 2x zoom for a 12mp image.

Looks like they are coming through with that prediction.

The base 15 is actually going to be a really great device, all things considered. The 3x on the 14pro is nice, but it isn’t as high quality as I would have preferred :/

The 2x is used quite a lot as I know it is using the same quality lens as the 1x shots.

Other than making the Portrait mode better, the long-lens is kind of not as great as hoped for on the 14pro :/

More megapixels means more digital zoom. Sometimes I want to crop way in and still have crispy detail, sometimes I need to if it's for client work.

I would expect them to use last years Pro sensor on this years regular models as the N-1 strategy has been, but this says a "new" three stacked sensor? Is this not last years Pro sensor?

I have been comparing the same photos taken from my 14PM with a 13PM from a friend, both phones using RAW format and the standard HEIC, and wowooow... is hard to find the differences... even in raw vs heic the difference is super subtle. Not sure 48MP is really doing a difference since there is pixel bining, not "real" 48MP photos. I think we need better lenses by now, they could really make a big difference.

No, there was a new Sony sensor launched last year intended for 2023 iPhones.
