Well there's nothing new that interests me. Things used to be different (i did rush and buy an iPhone 5S back then because there was a feature that interested me and my old phone was too slow for) but ... more megapixels? Replacing the notch with a fancier notch? Different design for something that sits in a pocket? Why?

It doesn't help that I'm not in the target market for a smartwatch. I haven't had a new electronic toy to be excited about in ages!
An Apple Watch is an amazing accessory for any iPhone. It allows you to disconnect from your iPhone, rather than using the iPhone all the time the Apple Watch takes over 95% of things you do on your iPhone with just a quick glance. No more pulling the iPhone out of your pocket ever time it alerts you. I can’t overstate its usefulness & practicality. The downside is you must spend 3 to 4 days to research and configure the 1st Apple Watch you ever own. After that all your settings will automatically transfer to a new Apple Watch when you purchase another. I was shocked at how it released me from the tyranny of my iPhone. I would never go back. 📱+⌚️=🏆

I have had an Apple Watch since series 1, and I agree. It’s really a great device.

Yes. It's time to replace my daughter's iPhone 8. The battery is dying. I'd rather wait till iPhone 15 is available but by then she'll be away at college and the 8's battery might die before then. She relies heavily on the iPhone. I think the alternative's are:
1) Replace the 8's battery now, so she'll still have a reliable phone till the 15s are available.
2) Replace the 8 now, but with an iPhone 14. But a 14 will be obsoleted a year earlier than a 15.
3) Make sure she has a reliable external battery pack. But that could be a hassle.
Any thoughts?

Depends on what you can afford or are willing to pay. The 14 will be supported long enough. Likely another 5 years. That won't be an issue. You certainly wouldn't want her phone to die while at school. And understand, even when Apple stops supporting an iPhone, you can still use it. It just won't get the latest OS updates. I hate when the word "obsolete" is used. Even though the iPhone 8 will not get iOS 17, it definitely won't be obsolete. iOS 16 will still be a good usable OS. It just won't have the new features of iOS 17. It's not 5G capable, if that's an issue. 4G LTE is still good. But it's not worth putting a new battery in. Get the 14. That's my advice. If her 8 battery is above 85% battery health, it should make it another month, then get the 15.

Same here.

I also had an older Samsung watch, series 3, which really wasn't as good. I'm trying a new series 6 with my new Flip5, but I pretty much bet I keep using my Apple Watch. (v6)

Paring down the great multitude of cables dotted around the place is absurd. With 1 great USB-C cable to rule them all you can spend your days charging your computer, then your phone, then your iPad, then your AirPods, all this is bad enough, but multiply it by a family of 4 and you’ll spend 24 hours a day managing charging. Let’s be honest. Right now every device I have is plugged into a cable. You can’t charge your Apple Watch or HomePods with your iPhone cable. You’ll still have miscellaneous cables of all sorts throughout your home. You’re not culling the multitude of cables around your home, you’re just throwing out some, and replacing it with others. Hopefully you recycle them at Apple, but most people will just put them in landfills. 🤮

I am not really buying the spend less time on your phone argument when in return one spends constantly staring at another screen instead. It’s a useful device for sure, but also just another device to pile on top of my iPhone.

I don’t stare at the screen on my Apple Watch, most interactions with incoming information arrive as silent vibrations on my wrist. Directions arrive as silent vibrations that differentiate between R & L. Alarms are easier with silent vibrations. I’ve never stared at my Apple Watch face, a quick glance is all that’s needed. Apple Pay is faster, easier. Transit passes are a breeze. The Apple Watch means so much less time staring at your iPhone or screens in general. People don’t realize what they are missing out on with just an iPhone, life is better with an Apple Watch too.

One caveat: You can just buy an Apple Watch for the first time and have it just work, it won’t. The first time you set up an Apple Watch you’ll need to spend 3 to 4 days researching & configuring it to your personal requirements. Once you’ve completed up your first set up, it automatically transfers to any new watch you may want. If you do this you’ll never go back to just an iPhone. 📱 + ⌚️ = 🏆

Not my experience at all. Went back after multiple Apple Watches to enjoying just a phone and a mechanical watch. Thankfully we have options. Tried that route for a few years, and am not looking back. Your mileage obviously differs. Nothing beats making our own experience.

no update here, USB-C? never plug my iPhone, just charge it via MagSafe.
the rest are minor upgrades that not make any real impact on a daily use tasks.

I always upgrade because it makes financial sense.

Carrier in us always offer insane incentive to trade in older iPhone.

I will just pick up cheap iPhone 12 Pro for $200 on craiglist- trade in for $1000 credit. Sell the old iPhone 14 pro max for like $900 to $1000. I would get about $1700 minimum back. So it only cost me like $200 to $300 upgrade every year. No brainer.

But the issue this year would also really depends on SIM card tray.
