The product is mature, and across the market, not just for Apple. same as the tablet and laptop space, there won’t be too many Earth shattering groundbreaking features but refinement to some degree. I don’t see any urgency to get additional features from other non iPhones, do you?

This points to how I feel

The fact that some people buy a new phone every year blows my mind

Are they also “upgrading” their washer & dryer every year?

I suppose they might if apple sold them

“Up to 6 times cleaner than our previous Power Wash Pro”

Doesn’t cut it for me as a feature to remotely capture my interest. But after all the fuss of apple being found out about, if that’s your sole reference point, I don’t see myself purchasing a different product because this is missing. It would have millions of people switching if that would move the needle in the mainstream market.
I don't expect anyone to buy another product on the strength of what I want to see in an iPhone. Sadly, the average person is technically illiterate, and wouldn't even how to use something like Dex, let alone know what it is.

Yes. It's time to replace my daughter's iPhone 8. The battery is dying. I'd rather wait till iPhone 15 is available but by then she'll be away at college and the 8's battery might die before then. She relies heavily on the iPhone. I think the alternative's are:
1) Replace the 8's battery now, so she'll still have a reliable phone till the 15s are available.
2) Replace the 8 now, but with an iPhone 14. But a 14 will be obsoleted a year earlier than a 15.
3) Make sure she has a reliable external battery pack. But that could be a hassle.
Any thoughts?

I used to upgrade just about every year.

I like smaller phones as I can sit without having to take it out of my pocket. So I won't be upgrading my 13 mini and will be holding on to it as long as I can. Unless Apple makes another mini soon.

So no. I will not upgrade to 15 or 16 or 17 (unless they make a mini version). Hopefully in about 3-4 years, Apple will make an SE with the mini design.

Buy her a 14 *now*. (or a 13, it's cheaper) and don't concern yourself with Apple's obsoleting date, it's irrelevant to need and usage.

I'd probably get the 14 now unless the presumed features on the 15 are really important to you or her.

The value of the iPhone comes from the entire ecosystem, so it’s quite disingenuous to simply look at its hardware features in a vacuum and conclude Apple is no longer innovating just because.
The entire value? Are you sure?

Tbh it's not the iPhone that has plateaued, but smartphones in general. It may be more visible on the Apple side because the hardware is more sturdy on average and they update the software on old phones for longer, but other than that there has been no new use for a smart phone in quite some time.

Maybe not entirely (no amount of integration can replicate the experience of a folding phone, for instance), but enough that it’s not really meaningful to simply compare an iPhone with an android phone and ignore the benefits of accessories like the Apple Watch, or services like iMessage or airdrop, I feel.

That’s why I no longer view Samsung as a competitor to Apple. We are no longer comparing smartphones spec for spec, but entire ecosystems.

That’s what it was ALWAYS about with the iPhone I’d argue. It’s never really been about the specs as Android manufacturers out-specced Apple from the word go, but none of them have ever been as successful.

usb is the future so you would be future proofing her connections if needed , depends on your budget cheapest option im assuming would be battery pack i would go with that for just 2 months, if not then the 14 and keep that for many more years

It’s okay bud, I once was like you. Very poor. And I also felt a bit down about people who had a disposable income. It’s okay, I’m sure you are very loved. Right?!

I agree with this. I doubt there is anything that would cause me to get a different brand phone because of how seamlessly all my Apple products work together. I don’t know of any other tech where the computer/laptop, tablet, watch, and phone all integrate and function to where you can pick up any device and continue what you were doing on another with no interruption. I realize that doesn’t work with every app or program, but it sure is nice.

Replace the Battery and get an iPhone 15 when it comes out…

How about Emergency Satellite Calls, that save lives? 😇

Well yes, that is a useful feature - but one suspects only for those users who have a tendency to go 'off-piste' - when most would be content for their device to have better phone quality and (I suppose) a better camera. Because, apparently, we must visually chronicle every moment of our lives now and be able to send it out immediately.

But really, most that comes out to justify a new iPhone are 'Squirrel!' moments on the OS that can only be fully appreciated on a new model. Otherwise...meh.

Meanwhile - from a safety POV, they might want to devote a little time to sensitivity on their iWatch and connected iPhone; closing the fridge door the other day, an alarm sounded and a window popped up on my Watch saying it sensed a fall, asked if I was alright and wanted to know if it should call 911 thru my iPhone?

Umm, no.

Sounds like you really slammed that fridge door hard & fast! 🤔

Well there's nothing new that interests me. Things used to be different (i did rush and buy an iPhone 5S back then because there was a feature that interested me and my old phone was too slow for) but ... more megapixels? Replacing the notch with a fancier notch? Different design for something that sits in a pocket? Why?

It doesn't help that I'm not in the target market for a smartwatch. I haven't had a new electronic toy to be excited about in ages!
Yeah, I totally get that. That’s the reason why didn’t opt for the the pro variants with the iPhone 12 & 13. But still Apple marketing gets me every time and I feel the urge to upgrade on a yearly basis. But with the price increases in Europe I’m going to stick to my 14 Pro for now. Would love an update on the 13 mini. This was one of the best iPhones I’ve ever had.
