For those that don’t have a phone with the island, it’s WAY better than the notch in every way, and will get better once the Face ID stuff and camera go under screen.

Hopefully for iOS 17 all notifications expand out from the DI and not just a few things like we have now. The way the screen recorder does it is perfect.

Spot on. IMO, Apple should have just kept on shrinking the notch further, as much as technically possible, while keeping it at the very top, creating a more gapless effect.
I don’t think there is a way to make it much smaller with current tech. Android phones don’t have depth sensing face unlock like iPhones do. And I’d easily take the notch over losing faceID. It’s one of the things that brought me back to iPhone after leaving with the 5S.

This year, all iPhone 15 models will include Apple's Dynamic Island that unifies the pill and hole cutouts at the top of the display, but there will also be a material change to the feature that wasn't included in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

According to a new tweet by Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the proximity sensor on the iPhone 15 series will be integrated inside the Dynamic Island area, instead of sitting below it.
The proximity sensor detects when the user holds the phone up to their ear and shuts off the screen. It's possible that moving the location of the sensor could be related to improvements to Face ID, but as Kuo says, the tweak is unlikely to result in any difference to the look or functionality of the Dynamic Island. Regardless, it will mark a change in components that may have simply been instigated to reduce costs.

According to Kuo, Apple supplier Finisar will shift to providing Apple with 940nm wavelength proximity sensors, compared to 1380nm for the iPhone 14 Pro. Based on additional information provided to MacRumors by leaker Unknownz21, the new proximity sensor is now part of the Single Pearl Module, codenamed "Sphinx."

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 lineup in September as usual. For everything we know about what's new in the new models, be sure to check out our dedicated roundups using the links below.

I will not be buying any more iPhones with the dynamic island. My 14PM has terrible battery life. And I’ve had it swapped out twice. And I literally only use it as a streaming device and to make phone calls.
The camera is terrible, the AI they use to smooth images makes everything look over processed. And the dynamic island is in my opinion apples greatest step back in the iPhone line up ever.
It wastes so much space, makes video games terrible to play, makes videos terrible to watch. And the implementation to get around the dynamic island is to crop videos and make them small so the dynamic island lays outside the viewing field.
I didn’t spent $1100 on a phone to loose display real estate. If I wanted that I would have purchased a smaller phone.

The notch was innovative. We didn’t loose screen real estate. Apple could have kept making the notch smaller until they found a way to integrate the features to under display. But they chose to walk backwards.

My 14PM will probably be my last apple product.

Does the "floating" Dock on macOS drive you crazy like it does me? It's not an iPad, I do actually want that strip of screen space at the bottom. Now I turn hiding on when I didn't before because I hate seeing that one tiny strip of wallpaper beneath the Dock being completely wasted. It's not an issue on the iPad because there all apps are fullscreen so the Dock goes away as soon as you launch an app, but it was clearly modeled after it and it's not appropriate for the desktop.

Seems like that strip at the top was modeled after that as well.
Yep, it also doesn’t mesh with the Rule of the Infinite Edge (which is part of the rationale for why the menu bar is always at the edge of the display on Mac OS).

Am I the only one that hasent been brainwashed by Apple Marketing? It's still a notch, a floating notch.
A smaller notch that's harder to notice. I actually think it was a good change.

Now this proximity sensor, hard to tell, it looks a little more sensitive and maybe cheaper, but the job it does is so simple, all I can muster is a "meh".

If one was designing an interactive screen for a mobile phone for the very first time, would one pencil in a dynamic island? Would it really be classed as a must have feature?
Without a bezel, which is really where this stuff should go, yeah, it's better than having no microphone or selfie camera, so yes, it's necessary.

As a 13PM owner I see no compelling reason to upgrade.

Like my last upgrade it’ll probably be dictated by the lifespan of the battery I have in this phone. If it can’t last a full day anymore I’ll pull the trigger. But not until then.
If you check backmarket.com iphone with new battery section, the newest refurbished models as such are the iphone 12 series from 2020, so I would reasonably expect you won't need a replacement until at least 2024

What a yawn fest. I bet they’re saving the goods for the Ultra version. I can’t be spending $2k on a smart phone…

really a fairly useful one—being able to see how far away my Uber is (finally), being able to see how much time’s left on a timer, see the music I’m playing, see how long a phone call has been (with some [yes, ostensibly superfluous, but] nice voice animations to boot) all without going into the individual apps & multitasking at the same time—I think it’s pretty convenient.

all we can hope for is that more apps take advantage of the API. Uber took WAY too long to implement especially when they were in the damn promo photos (but we all know their app is garbage, for both passengers and drivers 😂🙄)

also, given the response to my “do we really care though” comment re: slimmer 15P bezels, I do think it’s funny that more people don’t appreciate the increased real estate, however minor. we all know Apple is working towards a truly full-screen iPhone, they’re simply not willing to take the trashy shortcuts that companies like Samsung have.
